Not sure if you can compare the ATV4 with the cheaper devices.

It isn't just a streaming device, there are so many other apps that you can download, and they are only growing.

Kids love it for playing games as well as watching videos.

We are just waiting for DVBLogic to release their ATV4 app, that will talk to their server software, then we will be able to use the ATV4 to watch and record live TV.

Thats huge. Take Fanpass, it seems very good, but so much sport is in the wee hours. Can this be used to record via Fan Pass (which is live Tv sort of)

No it is only for over the air broadcast as far as I know.
You will need a PC with tv tuner/s in it, with the dvblink tvserver software running on it, to serve the program guide etc to your atv4, and store recordings.
There is already an app that will do similar if you have an hd homerun.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Dvblink works with a NAS and network tuners as well.
Alternative that I have hope for is Channels - www.getchannels.com
They are building for HDHomeruns.

Interesting. So I could use DVBLink software on my Mac, as the "tuner" is the Fanpass video? IPTV? Store recordings on my Mac, or on ATV4?

I see ATV4 DVBLogic app is due June. Or would that not help if FanPass is not a ATV4 app. Forgive my ignorance on this

Long term, maybe medium term, I feel Sky may go down the track of FanPass being a full featured product. PopUps and recording on the platforms they support, iPad, ATV4, game consoles, MySkyHDi. Make it a $56 full service. Make Sky Basic also a full service on SVOD. Allow FanPass to have OnDemand instead of recording ability? The aim being to remove infrastructure and all but one Sky building and staff, reduce costs. This allows reduced pricing for Basic, which with Natgeo and the like is a nice wee service. There are some possibly good options for Sky.

I wonder why they have so much storage?  Surely they only need enough for one HD movie to be downloaded.

Wish they had a less storage option for $50 - $100 cheaper (if their 32 GB - 64 gb phones at a $200 price difference is the guide for the cost of storage)

You'll need a bit of storage if you are pausing live TV.

Yes, the idea is that you'll use it for games as well, so you need enough app storage space. I really love my ATV4. Being able to have all the different countries' apps side-by-side without changing region is a huge improvement in usability. I have my store set to US iTunes so I can use the Siri functionality if the mood strikes. I have Plex on it so I can stream from my collection of media stored on my big old Mac Pro upstairs. I like that there are more and more apps being developed for it, so I don't have to involve a mobile device as well, for most of the services I use. If it had native apps for TVNZ On Demand, Fanpass and UK's Channel 4, it would be my one-stop streaming solution. As it is, I can airplay 2 of those from my iPad, so it's almost there :)

I love my Apple TV 4. Lightbox app and Netflix app work wonderfully, and there are a few cool games for it too. Especially some good multiplayer games where people connect up with their iPhone and play.

I'm looking forward to see what else comes with apps and also HomeKit.

$259 from DSE/Kogan is a rip - you can get them locally with a proper warranty for less than that (Noel Leeming, PB etc)

Really? A quick search at the moment had the 32gb for $298 and 64 for $398

My apologies, what I failed to mention was I was basing my statement off the $259 plus their outlandish shipping ($28). Add in the potential for GST/duty/etc (though I don't know if you get hit with that under $400?) and the potential lac of CGA protection etc... I got an email offer from NL for $269 today - I didn't realise this wasn't on their website at that price.

I'd be after a one box as well. Personally in our market the atv4 is the only one close (well and chromecast). They're the only officially sold and developed for (albeit slowly).

Still love my Roku3. The plex and Netflix apps are great. And priced pretty well in comparison. But getting a little old. Would have preferred a 16gb atv4 priced at $198 (based on their 32-64gb difference and the overseas costs of other devices). 300 I think is too steep.
