ArcticSilver:

It sounds to me like if you take what he says on balance then he's at times both right and wrong (just like the mainstream media)?

I support Spotify on this, people so have the right to choose who they want to listen to, even if some call it extreme. We are a democracy after all (well at least I hope we are).

On a lighter note, James Blunt has threatened to release new music unless Spotify removes Joe Rogan.

Then there’s freedom of choice...with so much content, one can choose not to listen to his podcasts. Why go to all the trouble of losing music playlists and the experience because of one person who happens to have a dissenting viewpoint on some, not all subjects and probably wasn’t even on your radar till social media heaved a collective sigh.

You don’t convert anyone by silencing them. One can still use personal judgement and choose content for enjoyment rather than shooting the messenger and harming the remaining artists.

What about all the other artists who are on Spotify...why should they be penalised by subscribers leaving.

Leaving Spotify to go to YouTube which contains thousands of anti vax videos clips and messages doesn’t make any sense.

As Salmon Rushdie wrote...'defend the right to be offended.'

Given you like the apple ecosystem, what are your views on Apple using slave labour to manufacture their products?

I just question that you can drop spotify because Joe Rogan said children don't need vaccination.  Yet, you stick with apple whose suppliers have a part to play in the genocide of an entire race of people.

Yes, one can choose not to listen to podcasts. However you continue to subscribe to the service your money is being used to provide a platform for this idiot to spread his mis information. I choose not to do that.

What about all the other artists on Spotify? They will still get paid (arguably better) through my subscription to another service. Spotify has made it very clear they value the profits that Rogan brings in over those of more talented recording artists.

Who would you propose that I use for my electronics other than Apple that have better position on CSR?

My biggest frustration with YouTube music is it is still worse than play music was years ago. It's an ok service but it's more YouTube and less play music which for a music service I'm bit a fan of. The personal music locker feels like a hangover from play music that's cast to one side to keep old users happy instead of being an integral part of the service it used to be and simple things like caching music as it plays used to mean you could download a lot of music just using the apps so I never really ran out on the tube when it went underground and lost phone signal (not such an issue now in above ground Christchurch). That said I stuck with it because no ads in YouTube is pretty much a good icing on the cake. I've learnt to live with my annoyances in order to get the added youtube functionality.

I agree that Google again discontinued a good product without fully replacing its features despite promising to do so. But I think that Google Play Music (GPM) was actually killed by Spotify rather than YouTube Music (YTM). That’s why YTM worked more like Spotify where, for example, you use existing playlists and create your own to share with other users. Google have done a lot of work since to upgrade the playlists and recommendations so they are also more competitive with Spotify.

I’m now a committed YTM user who previously used Spotify. YouTube (YT) integration is great if you want it e.g. shared of libraries between YT and YTM. I can’t see or play all YouTube content/playlists in my YTM app but I can use the fuller interface in YT to play and manage music. Effectively, I use YT for foreground, onscreen stuff and YTM mainly just for background music playback.

I recently looked at returning to Spotify but improvements to YTM meant there is less reason to change except for a larger audio catalogue and better device integration - I decided to stick with non-smart speakers.

But YTM has a less obvious benefit which could be meaningful for other users. The calculation of payments to artists is different than for Spotify. On YouTube Music, artists receive payments based on what the paying subscriber has listened to and lower rates for what free users are listening to. Spotify calculates payments based on paid and free (ad-supported) users being in one bucket which benefits the most popular artists more. I have more eclectic tastes and less streams so the benefits to the artists I support are likely to be more than 5x what they’d get from Spotify if I rely on the calculations done by this artist:

You can check out the different types of rates that are used in articles like this one:

I used to skip to and fro between Spotify and Apple Music, especially when Spotify were offering three months of premium for $15. Now I am supporting Neil Young ( one of my fave musicians) and Josie Mitchell, and have just taken a 12 month Apple Music subscription which saves $31 compared to paying monthly. Effectively two months free.

We went to Apple Music a couple of months ago. It's fine, it's not as good for discovery as Spotify but still decent. Having lossless is nice.

I use Apple Music and I'm pretty happy with it. I just play it on my phone, either with my AirPods Max or Airplay to my Sonos Playbase.

  • receiver                                         - Yes
  • chromecast audio                           - Yes (using aircast on home assistant)
  • Alexa                                             - Yes (check its available in your market)
  • homepods                                      - I don't but obviously it'll work
  • Google home speaker                     - N/A
  • other (eg raspberry pi via mpd).     - Apple TV

I'm moving towards airplay targets everywhere. Old Airport Expresses are good for this. Gen 1 is Airplay 1 only, Gen 2 is Airplay 2. I've bought them for around $20 each second hand but obviously YMMV

We use YouTube music on cast enabled speakers (Xiaomi, JBL & Google home minis), Chromecasts (audio, original and ultra), phones and PC.

I believe I also used tidal and Spotify when I had them on all the same devices but I'm doubting that with people on here saying tidal doesn't work on some devices.

Separate to all the controversy, I signed up to Tidal recently to try out some of the Atmos music and found I really like it. The combo of Atmos and Lossless is a winner for me. I was also plesently surprised to find they have a Windows app that destroys iTunes IMO, and a decent Android TV app, though I would like more options to filter the music I've added.

I also have Apple Music, but I've never liked Spotify at all so I never even really used it when I had it for free on my Spark account. It's no loss for me.

I have been using youtube premium (with youtube music).  I guess i am one of the lucky ones as mine is only 9.99nz a month (signed up when it was released and had the price locked in if I kept paying it).

The App is slowly getting better over time.

I just play music on youtube. The nags / begging for following / buying things / etc gets annoying so mostly only listen to artists who don't do that. Youtube music app is ok but it still plays the video and needs your phone screen on. I didn't like Apple music, not sure why.
