How much is a Tidal subscription these days?

I used to pay nearly $40 a month for it back in the days when it was the only streaming service with lossless audio. In the end I decided it was too expensive and went back to paying $15 a month for Apple Music. Of course Apple Music have since introduced lossless at no extra cost.

I have to admit I quite liked the user experience with Tidal but I wonder if they will survive now that they have lost their point of difference.

Tidal starts at $14.99 ($NZ) a month and the higher quality (Master Quality audio, Dolby Atmos, Sony 360 Reality Audio) is $29.99 a month. The family plan starts at $22.49 a month, which matches Spotify's $22.50, so I'm trialling this (90 days for $1).

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Thanks for confiming @MaxineN

I signed up, immediate thoughts are, nice app, nice interface on mobile, desktop app and in the browser (bonus point for dark mode). Sign up and setup of accounts seems easy. Audio quality seems good. Lyrics playback are flat like in Youtube Music but at least they are there.

Then it fell apart a bit, its only once you connect up the services that it is clear that the alex skill for deezer lets you issue voice requests, but you cannot issue commands to target a specific amazon device from within any of the apps like I can on Spotify. There is a cast function just like in Amazon Music but on Deezer it doesnt support amazon devices. Which was a shame. The website pre-signup touted amazon integration as possible, but once logged in you get plenty of community posts saying that isnt exactly the case and they are still working on it. After searching in the app to import podcasts, it seems to have a lot less than spotify as some regulars are missing.

So all up, in comparison to Spotify, cheaper by $5, equal in interface experience/quality/stability, less in podcasts, less in Amazon device integration, lower quality lyrics, no genius function. So I think this goes into second place and definitely into 'check back in 6 months to see if things have improved'

For my purposes, mainly due to how many amazon devices I have around the house, Spotify remains the platform of choice.

See I just listen to music and I don't do any casting whatsoever. Lyrics are not so much of a hot feature for me.

Maybe I am more of a basic listener..

So here's my experience 3 days into my switch to Deezer.

Overall experience:  Very happy so far. Its a different experience to Spotify in many ways, and yet the same in many ways. All of the basics are there

  • Follow playlists
  • Follow artists
  • Create your own playlists
  • Launch a track mix from a song that is playing
  • Various personalised daily mixes and curated new music. Spotify probably still has the edge here but its early days for Deezer to learn what I like
  • Podcasts are still part of the platform but they're not shoved down your throat (yet!). There's no guarantee this won't change but for now the way podcasts are handled is OK
  • Sonos integration is no different to Spotify. I don't use any smart speaker eco system but Sonos works well with both streaming services

The things I like

  • The CD quality sound setting is a vast improvement. No its not lossless nor Hi Def but it is much better that what I was listening to before. I haven't done any back to back testing so this is purely based on what I perceive but so far I have noticed much better clarity at low listening levels. I've mainly noticed this in the car using CarPlay. I don't have to crank the volume as much as I used to to hear and enjoy the music
  • Flow. Interesting concept which I'm still getting my head around but so far it has provided a great mix of music I like and music I don't know about but fits the music I like. Keen to explore it more.

So far I'm not ready to jump back to Spotify.

Does Deezer have a feature similar to "Go to song radio" on Spotify? Which is effectively a curated thematic playlist the song belongs to.

Oh wait, I'm guessing "Launch a track mix from a song that is playing" is that feature, right?

Isn’t this a form and hence shouldn’t it be a open discussion?

Maybe I saw the wrong post but it seemed reasonable and no offensive to me and I’m not anti vax.

We need to stop blocking views we don’t agree with, rather having a open discussion about them and why they are wrong (assuming they are). We’re creating division in the community which is just bad for everyone.

There is a difference between offensive views and incorrect facts.

Yes, track mix is what you're looking for. I've only had limited time to try it so can't vouch for how good the algorithm is yet but the capability exists.

How did you get that rate? When I signed up for the trial, I was told it was a 7 day trial, then the first 30 days free if I continue afterwards.

So if podcasts and iffy commentators and misinformation.had been around in say 1960, would people have been banned for questioning the safety of Thalidomide ?

Questioning something is not the issue. An important part of the scientific process, and what allows it to progress through the years is the right to question what is currently believed to be true.

But there is a very distinct difference between questioning something and deliberately presenting miss-truths and passing them off as if they are fact. And those who choose to profit from those miss-truths are not worthy of my hard earned money.

MaxineN: ... I actually get to listen to new stuff and it discovers stuff much like a very old service that isn't here anymore, PANDORA.

If I ever get to the point of installing VPN for location altering & privacy, I would sign up for Pandora again. Been stuck in this hell hole of trying one service after another that S.O. approval in a mixed Apple / Android household since they pulled back to the US.

If you're going down the Vpn route to sign up to services YouTube is the way to go. I don't know what the forum deal is with this as I believe it violates Google's terms so I'm not going in to details, but YouTube family membership in India is about $3 a month.

Here's the link I was trying to post on Page 1. Amazon Music 4 months free for new customers thanks to Neil Young 😄

https://www.amazon.com.au/music/unlimited?view=neilyoung

I have Amazon prime so I can't test it to see if it works. I was on Tidal (and loved it), but I'm cheap so ended up switching to YT Premium since it's our main form our television (at least 50% of it anyway). + I have 5 other members connected to my family plan. Definitely at the bottom of the pile when it comes to music and playlist selection but I put up with it.

As part of the discussion of this thread was the reason behind the OP decision to look at other music streaming services. I just wanted to let people know that Brene Brown (who was one of the named Spotify artists taking a stand against this situation) has just released a detailed statement on FB about her situation as someone who has podcasts on Spotify. And as a significant part of the stance of some people making decisions about Spotify is surrounding misinformation I thought it was important to read her detailed statement.

To summarise some of her statement. She had heard of the JR issue and decided to hold a couple of her podcasts which were ready to release/as well as holding off making further podcasts until she had learnt more about this issue. She has since spoken with Spotify leadership about their policies surrounding misinformation. Spotify has since published its misinformation policy. Brene is now in the process of learning how the policy will be applied, adding she hopes to be back to releasing podcasts next week.

Obviously the struggle here is balancing freedom of speech vs misinformation.

I think this is an amazing way to deal this situation. She had heard something that concerned her, paused her involvement until she was fully informed of the facts, then had open discussions with Spotify about her concerns, she is now fully aware of how Spotify will proceed in the future regarding their policies and will look to return shortly.
