This is exactly what annoys me about ads now days.

Primary ads I get are legitimate business/services (which is fine) but when those are unavailable you get scams & adult content ads.

And there's no filter to go against ad types..... on YouTube (Google account) you can set your preferred ads but that is not a guarantee.

The whole advertisement targeting system needs to be changed if Google wants to stop people thinking about downloading an ad blocker.

Once people are on an ad blocker they're probably never going to want to delete it.

I get no ads, the creators get paid, and I also have access to YouTube Music if I need it. There are ways to pay less for it than I do if you search but I feel it is utterly worthwhile. No ads on any devices is wonderful.

I don't think they get paid as much though, compared to someone that watches the ads. Many creators hardly get paid anything as the amounts appear to have dropped, which is why many either use patreon or get sponsors to place ads in the videos, which then cuts Youtube out of the revenue.. I wouldn't have an issue with the ads if I could chose the type of ads it played.

The longer the video the more they get paid. I understand wanting to support creators you really like using something like Patreon, but for a blanket cover, YouTube Premium does the job and I get to avoid any and all adverts.

You will have missed wall to wall adverts for ACT before the election too. youtube must be a strange place to pay for advertising for, the more affluent/intelligent people you want to target are so annoyed by the ads that they either have adblock (unless TV and phone app if you not a tech genius with a pi-hole or whatever) or premium.

Just had the adblock warning for first time Adblock plus on Firefox

The Reddit site referred to above was interesting. My amazement at seeing objectionable ads was echoed by a Reddit poster as follows,

Thank you for all you are doing. I disabled it for an hour the one day I kept getting messages and all I got on youtube was ads for asian singles and skanky looking women. I am a female and having disgusting ads like that sent to me made no sense and floored me. I cannot believe that is the stuff YouTube is promoting. Children can see this stuff. I put the adblock back on after that and did what this post suggests and haven't had any issues.

She says this for me as well.

Premium gives access to YouTube Music that has most things I want and no ads on YouTube. The Android music app is buggy and annoying. I still get value from it.

I watch a lot of content on YouTube. Some weeks more than all the other streaming apps combined. It's also my main news platform. If I had to see the ads I would not watch often. I do see ads on my work machine and they are nothing like the trash described above. Monday.com ads played on every video for a while.

The family subscription option kind of hooked us. I originally got Premium way back when YouTube was producing some pretty good premium TV series. YouTube Premium has produced almost nothing for several years now. I'm still feeling a little bit ripped over that aspect.

With your data, which YT is using for its own purposes and is bullying content creators? I mean the meaningful content, not the clickbait and blabbermouths.

So you think that by paying extra, monetarily, YT (Google!) won't use your data? Seriously?

The whole EU (after all, 446.8 million inhabitants) is against (non-obvious) practices of tech companies and you, on the other hand, have no problem with it? Well.

I don't have a single adblocker on any of my computers, only in a single, central location for my entire network and via VPN all mobile devices outside the house, no matter where I am in the world - it all goes through this one, small device that also updates itself. It didn't need more than a cup of coffee.

Added: And maybe it will prevent me from NOT being asked directly about my pants size and colour preference in a completely unknown shop when I walk in the door of the shop under the AI camera. ... or on his state of health when my son goes into a job interview (don't worry, he's ok, should just be private). How interesting do you think data from health apps will be for insurance companies and potential employers when selecting customers and candidates? And anyone who thinks that's paranoia isn't up to date on technology. What you look at on YT reveals an incredible amount about a user's interests, preferences, household assets, possibly political views and habits. Remember, Google is not a non-profit social enterprise. Your choice.

Sponsorblock is awesome!

According to my statistics;, I have submitted 2,493 video segments and saved 26d, 8hr, 15min of other people's lives :).

Meanwhile I have skipped 2d, 7hrs (10k+ segments). <-- That gives a guess as to how much time I have wasted on YouTube in the past 3 years.

It's a race by the regulars to add sponsorship segments when a popular YouTube channel releases a video. Usually within a few minutes for LTT, Colin Furze, etc.

A few people have 'the last say' in it, so segments can be locked. The voting aspect of segments also determines what gets automatically hidden.

--- going off topic about ad blockers with sponsor block.... whoops.

I bought Google Play Music when it first came out. Then when Youtube Premium came along, I was given that as part of my $10 a month. Then Google Play Music became Youtube Music.

There's no way I'd pay for Youtube Premium. Almost all of the "content" is the hottest of hot garbage. Talking heads winding out their stupid videos for 10+ minutes so they can montise it.

Now if paying for Youtube Premium took money away from these clowns - sorry, "creators", I'd pay for the family deluxe plus edition. I'd sign my dead grandmother up too and pay for her.

Interesting, I use Ublock Origin, but I sit through the sponsored portions in the Youtube videos because I don't mind those sorts of ads and I know their video analytics rely on metrics like that, including getting future sponsorships.
