I don't like ads and I don't agree that they are necessary. People have been brainwashed into thinking everything would screech to a halt without them but this is just propaganda by vested interests. With a little imagination better methods can be found.

You do you boo, but make no mistake, until magically someone has a better mass market way of providing these creators with a stream of income, it's either subscription, sponsorship and or advertising. Right now, if you use an ad blocker you are consuming content and depriving it's creator, income.

I stand by my comments but I feel there is also a larger issue at play here. We are surrounded by advertising. We are saturated with it. There is practically no activity any longer that does not include being bombarded by ads. Many people (I would guess most people, but I don’t have a statistic for that) dislike the constant advertising barrage. People block ads because they are irritated by them. Ads are like mosquitoes. They are everywhere and they are annoying. There is a reason why many people don’t like them.
I wish I could give more than one +1 for this. I'm utterly sick of Ads, and basically no longer watch free-to-air TV or (other than Radio NZ) listen to the radio any more because of them (less than 1 hour per month combined). Even fast forwarding doesn't really work, as it ruins the immersive experience when watching a film or show. And dealing with the armloads of waste paper shoved in my mailbox (distributors seemingly largely ignore the "No Junk Mail" sign) is nothing but a pain - I never read the stuff.
And whoever put those totally obnoxious giant glaring TV screens showing nothing but Ads on all the platforms at Wellington Railway Station recently should be immediately consigned to the ninth circle of Hell to burn in searing agony for all eternity.
I really enjoyed some time I spent i Hawaii recently. They have essentially made billboards and many forms of overt advertising signage illegal in the State. It was very pleasant not to have all that in my face all the time, and quite jarring to come back to our billboard cluttered roads.
Personally, I will do whatever I can to avoid Ads, without the slightest twinge of guilt. I pay for streaming services to get content Ad free, and the moment they start interrupting my experience with Ads I will cancel.

Oh dear, I must be depriving those poor content creators of income when I go for a pee during ad breaks. Whatever was I thinking?

99% of the videos I watch on YT have in-video advertising lke dodgy VPNs, learning platforms, mobile games and what not. I bet YT premium subscribers still have to watch them. Shouldn't YT ban in-video advertising now that it has banned ad-blockers?

Next time, you will be thinking that you better have a good lawyer, and also wondering how much they will cost. You might need one when they take you to court for breaching an implied contract and stealing creators' income by leaving the room to urinate when a TV ad was playing. You wretched miscreant - think of the children!

The bus I catch partly covers their costs by having advertising in the bus stops. I ignore the advertising and don't read it. Should I be blocked from getting on a bus until I've read the advertising in the bus stop?
That is a ridiculous argument to put forward. Unlike content creators, advertising isn't the ONLY way bus operators earn money.
Plenty of youtube channels are not stand-alone ad-only content creators. Even excluding sponsor segments, you have:
I think many people here would agree that the creators supported solely by ad revenue tend to be the trashiest of YT content; reaction videos, reposts of copyrighted video, and clickbait.

I dispute the assumption that ads have a right to exist. They are a dumbed down brain-eating invasion of privacy that we would all be better off without. If creators want to build a following, they should give samples away to make their content known. This is a tried and tested marketing mechanism. Porn sites use it to great effect.
Ad blockers are a great freedom tool. People who don’t mind the ads won’t block them. People who do won’t have to see them. Everyone wins.
ROFL at your porn comparison, what percentage of people who consume porn do you think pay for porn?
If it were true that giving a taster via youtube worked better than ads, then why do ads exist? Why do content creators have sponsors? Given the prevalence of ads, it's clearly and obviously a valid source of income.
Don't even get me started on how flawed the argument for teasers are.. You understand those are Adverts too, right?
For someone as passionate about art and culture as you appear to be, it seems very strange to me, that you would even consider depriving a creator of their primary source of income. You can try and kid yourself, all you like, but you are 100% depriving someone of income.
And yet the porn industry makes a ridiculous amount of money, and doesn't seem to be in any financial distress.
Teasers are generally relevant and not inserted where unwelcome, neither of which apply to typical internet/YT ads.
Whinging about lost income is a slippery slope and needs to be done carefully, or you can quickly end up making jobs just for the sake of it. Is it lost income if I don't watch the video? Also yes. Potential losses are limitless. Unless the loss of income is linked to expenditure that wouldn't have occurred if they knew the income wouldn't be coming (e.g. custom commissions, contract work etc.), cry me a river.

Say hello to SponsorBlock:
SponsorBlock is an open-source crowdsourced browser extension and open API for skipping sponsor segments in YouTube videos. Users submit when a sponsor happens from the extension, and the extension automatically skips sponsors it knows about using a privacy preserving query system. It also supports skipping other categories, such as intros, outros and reminders to subscribe, and skipping to the point with highlight.

The other way is to pay for content.

I have no problem with that. I have a problem with links that take me to 'free' content that then hammer me with ads. If I am just viewing something casually, or one-off, I don't need all the uninvited baggage.

Then don't watch it "casually" or as a "one off."
I pay for things that have value for me, like Geekzone. The rest is just white noise.

On TV one earlier tonight, either the news or 7 sharp, a segment telling us to watch our spending this xmas, if you don't have the money then don't buy it, don't live beyond your means.
30 seconds later; ads, ads, ads, buy this, buy that, ain't got the cash.....doesn't matter, we take afterpay, we take credit cards.
Thanks for explaining "plethora".
It means a lot.
I came to this thread looking for workarounds, and the Brave browser is working for me so far, but it is screwing up some Photoshop shortcuts. Ctrl Alt C (canvas size) does not work once Brave has been opened, and it doesn't start working again if you close Brave. There'll be a way to change the Brave shortcuts I expect, but it could come down to paying for Premium eventually.
