Can we please have a proper update on where Bigpipe is at with IPv6 support?

I have received the following from SixXS this morning, indicating they are shutting down in June. No other tunneling service provides a NZ-based service, so I now must find an ISP with IPv6 support.

TL/DR: SixXS is shutting down on 2017-06-06 (in ~10 weeks).

In 1999, Jeroen and I started SixXS, a project which aimed to provide IPv6
connectivity to users who wanted to learn about the network protocol and
gain experience operating IPv6 networks. Our vision was to facilitate
migration to IPv6 in content and access providers.

We were able to provide IPv6 to 50'000+ individual users and companies in
140+ countries, using servers hosted at 40+ Internet providers in 30+
countries. We are incredibly proud of what we've accomplished together, and
how many people have gotten to know all about IPv6 due to our combined efforts.

We are reaching out to you as you are registered in our system as having one
or more active IPv6 tunnels. We have chosen a somewhat symbolic date of
2017-06-06 to turn down the SixXS services, which should give you ten weeks
to arrange alternative connectivity.

We have completed a retrospective and rationale document, which details our
experience developing and operating the SixXS tunnelbroker over the last 18
years. We have worked through our plans with the many dedicated ISPs that have
been involved:
https://www.sixxs.net/sunset/

We realize that SixXS has gotten a lot of attention in the last 18 years. We
will be reaching out to IPv6 communities around the world, to explain our
decision to them as well.

-- Kindest Regards, Pim van Pelt and Jeroen Massar (SixXS founders)

I have it on good authority that IPv6 is days away and not weeks, there should be an announcement thread coming about this early next week.

Bigpipe?

I'm sure you can appreciate after being told IPv6 was coming soon almost eleven months ago, I must treat the possibility of such an announcement with some scepticism. Two months is a tight enough time-frame to migrate to a new ISP when you have a list of requirements to check off. What Bigpipe announces, if anything, may also not be suitable. Looks like at least part of my weekend is going to be tied up researching alternatives.

I no longer work for Bigpipe and currently work on another product within Spark, but still keep in touch with the Bigpipe team. IPv6 is coming very soon and I wouldn't have posted saying so if I didn't know the announcement date.

Not sure why you're so overly worried about the situation though... I'm sure given you have two months you can afford to wait 3-4 days before making a decision on moving ISP.

There is honestly no need to :) You can trust @Flickky. If even a "beta" doesn't happen in the next week I'll change providers to My Republic.

That is how much faith I have...

IMO peering would be more useful right now, but that seems about as likely as Spark selling Bigpipe. frown

Moving ISPs is easy enough. Finding one which will give me what I need, and not charge a fortune for it, that's the difficult part. I find it incredibly frustrating.

There are still ISPs out there that charge high monthly fees for static IPs, and "network engineers" who fail to address even the simplest questions, as demonstrated by my contact with one ISP today. If they can't answer simple questions regarding costs, the ability to set PTR records for IPv4 addresses, or set up reverse delegations for IPv6, it's rather difficult to make an informed decision.

I am actually with Bigpipe because they used to be well represented on Geekzone. The fact that they were open about their plans to launch static IPs, although not officially announced, was the main reason I signed up. They almost kept their promise too, being only a few days late.

Trying not to worry too much until I see what is announced next week :)
