Huh! Owned an S10+ for two years and had no idea it had this built in. Just as well as I’m sure it wouldn’t help with hypochondria - I just got a reading of 89!

89 is quite low for a healthy individual. I would ? its accuracy

Yep, the first reading was higher, but even the discrepancy in the two readings is enough for me not to trust it.

So I've gone with an AliExpress-sold model - not the cheapest at $22.23 in total, but it had an estimated delivery date of 10 Dec, a few weeks earlier than most of the others. As to whether it'll arrive by then, I'm sceptical!

Pulse oximeters need good tissue perfusion to work so cold fingers might not give good signal. Put the hand under the sheets to warm them. They also work on ears and in nostrils if the probes are smaller. (Unlikely with consumer grade ones)

Accuracy is probably 1 to 2 percent.

Most well people will be 96% when on air. The poster above with 89% is unlikely to be correct unless they have significant issues. Reposition it on another warm digit and it should be significantly higher.

If your bored, note your saturation at sea level and the at cruising altitude on plane and see how they are lower with lower air pressure.

(89% corresponds to oxygen arterial partial pressure of 60mmHg or less and would usually result in supplementary oxygen being given and some thinking about the cause. In covid world lower oxygen levels are tolerated because limited resources most likely)

I bought one of these for about $42 (inc courier). In stock ex Auckland - arrived in about 3 days.

https://www.emax.co.nz/Oxygen-Oximeter-Finger-Pulse-Rate-with-Batteries-7931.html

Said my o2 was 98 and my wifes 99.

Easy to use. Dont know how accurate. Just pop your finger in and wait a second or two.

Shows pulse rate as well - checked that and was accurate.

Seemed sensible to have one at home these days.

Thanks, just grabbed one myself.

The 89% was with my phone’s reader, not a dedicated oximeter. As mentioned, I have no faith in its accuracy, which is why I’ve bought a dedicated unit.

Or are you suggesting I should be able to trust my phone’s readings?

No I would not trust a phone oximeter but just labouring the point about the number and putting dome context into the discussion.

This may have been answered elsewhere; what is the make & model of the pulse oximeter the MoH/DHB is handing out to home isolation people ?

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Jesus h Christ. As usual the medical manufacturing and supply industry rips of the medical providers. I remember when I nursed in a kids hospital in Sydney, the BioTech guy told me that it cost A$500 for a new accessories basket for a wheeled stand patient monitor. All it was was a 12" x 8" x 6" plastic coated wire metal and they were replacing broken ones with a plastic one for less than A$50 bought locally. They broke because kids like to ride on anything with wheels πŸ˜€

$300 for that? My cheap Chinese unit has an OLED screen, warning alarm, graphical heart beat display and logging/graphing features to show oxygen levels over time. According to the manual "This device has no audible alarms and is intended only for spot-checking". Who is checking? If your oxygen is dangerously low, presumably it won't be the person isolating at home alone. You at least want an alarm to alert you before you reach a state of confusion.

And... the MOH has purchased 16,300 units. Even at a large discount its a lot of money.

I am wondering how it compares to the cheaper ones on the market. Guessing the expensive ones meets certain standards to justify the price. I see some being sold claim to be recommended by the NHS. Maybe the MOH could recommend some?. If they only have about 16,000 that is obviously not going to be enough.

Don’t get me started on the pharmaceutical RIP OFF market. Anything medical triple and greater.

Thank god for pharmac.

People.dont know how lucky they are.

In 1996 I saw a sign in an American pharmacy that the price of 5 days of Augmentin oral antibiotic was $us250. That's 15 tablets for nearly 500nz...

I always wondered what that setting was. I'd see it on my Garmin and generally just ignored it. Got 98% before, and I've no idea on the accuracy.
