Hi fellow GZers. I am in the process of buying a Ute to replace my 1994 Hilux Surf. My preference is now leaning towards a Ute (pickup truck style). My first pick is a Holden Colorado, but I don't know of anyone who has one to give me the pros and cons. Any other Make/models to recommend would be appreciated.

PS; reason for wanting a Ute is for throwing two dogs in the back to keep their smell and dirt away from cabin (major pitfall from SUV.).

Go for a hilux. There is a reason that a lot of tradies use them. We have a 2011 and 2 2015's both double cab 2wd and they have been bullet proof.

what sort of budget do you have ?

 

I'm thinking of getting a ute closer to the end of this year (possibly)

25k approx is my budget. I know the Hiluxs are solid but they command a premium. I kinda thought the other makers have caught up.

I have seen a couple decent Colorados on trademe with higher k.'so and later model too.

Ford Ranger or Toyota Hilux would be my recommendations. There is a reason they cost more...

 

Are you after 2WD or 4WD?

My Surf is 4wd and have hardly used it in that mode. So 2wd isn't a problem.

I am seeing a lot of high k ex tradie/ex lease utes on turners auctions. Some with a service history.

The one reason i wouldnt get a Hilux.
The best new ute on the market is the D-Max or the V6 Rok hands down.

 

Consider the MU-X too, Also how much for your surf and is it a Turbo Diesel 3L, Manual or Auto?

I wouldnt touch a ex leased vehicle with a 100ft pole. All thrashed beyond the point of reason and never looked after properly. The lease companies just keep them running till "Disposal" then they get reconditioned at the dealership then on sold.

My old surf is auto (which I prefer for Ute too) and got it with about 190k on the clock. 7 years later now has 303k. I do tend to hold on to my vehicles for a long time.

But some ex lease utes do have a full service history. I thought that might counter a heavy footed, pie eating tradie

There is nothing wrong with ex-lease utes in my opinion. My first generation Ranger was an ex-lease ex-PGG Wrightsons 4x4 Ranger which had done 217,000 kms, but it had a full service history. I kept it until 300,000kms. Because it was out of warranty I did regular oil changes myself and the only major expense was changing the cambelt. I never had any mechanical issues at all. It cost around $90 to fill and I got around 600kms to a tank.

 

My next Ranger was a 2nd hand 2012 PX Ranger 4x4 which I bought in 2014 with 94,000kms on it. This time I got Ford to service it every 15,000kms as per the schedule (as still under warranty). I paid to extend the factory warranty to 6 years, which worked in my favour when I sold it in October last year. Again, nothing ever went wrong on it. It had a bigger tank so cost around $100 to fill, but I got 800-900kms from a tank which was great.

 

I new have a 2016 PXII Ranger Wildtrak, currently with 23000kms on it. I love it.

 

I can't recommend the Rangers highly enough. Their towing ability is second to none, as is their 4x4 ability, and they have some great features. The 2x4 PX Rangers from late 2012 onwards have rear diff lock from memory, so even if you got a 2x4 one, you'd still get good traction on boggy grass or slippery boat ramps etc.

It can be difficult to fined second hand utes without high kms. 

 

Most of the ute market is business vehicles and they tend do a lot of kms.

 

Ex-lease vehicles are usually well serviced.  My concern would be lots of heavy work, with associated effects on suspension and transmission.  For example: Builders towing heavily loaded trailers.

But the Ford Ranger is and has been the number one selling new vehicle in NZ for a while now.. :-)

That's because the new Hilux is disgusting inside and out. Looks like they stuck a tablet on dash! Ranger is good looking but I do like the colorado better at this stage.
