I suppose people do, but most renters are probably quite careful - after all, the Insurance excess is a killer on them.

You may not. But a rental car would see say 1 driver a week x 50. 50 different drivers a year. If 1% were maniacs that's 5 major beatings a year. That should be ok, but it might not.

I got it on my MR-S and it paid for part of a repair. Basically something stupid happened to one of the sensors and it ran rich and clogged up the catylitic converter. The exhaust system was not covered. They did cover the fixing the sensor and part of the diagnostic costs for it running like crap. ALmost paid for the policy on that one alone.

 

Doesnt cover things like the roof mechanism when I asked about that.

We've got it on every one of our work cars. Was great when we had the head gaskets go on one of our cars and the massive bill (Subarus!) got fully covered by the $900 mechanical warranty. Easily paid for itself and the piece of mind is great.

Batman: Rental car = probably beaten to submission by many drivers who have no vested interest in looking after the car.

I'd say it's not worth the $5,000. I'd offer $1,000 for that reason.

 

Not necessarily, sure some immature drivers will thrash a rental... for 5 min until it isn't fun, but a bad driver with no mechanical sympathy for a car owning  it for the same km is far worse. A rental car will be serviced like clockwork and fixed when it is needing to be fixed.

 

I dispute your claim (happy ex-rental owner)

On insurance - if you decide to get it read the conditions and exclusions VERY carefully.  IME normal wear and tear is usually the #1 exclusion reason and with 200k on the clock they could just about say anything is 'normal wear and tear'. I doubt it's worth the money.  Put the $1400 in the bank as a 'just in case' fund, if you don't need it then great at least it's still $$ in your pocket.

 I often hear that rentals are serviced like clockwork, but I'm not sure how true this is. An old workmate of mine worked at one of the large rental places, at one stage and refused to buy a car when he found it was an ex rental, as they were never serviced.

Agree with the bad owner worse than rental car. 

 

But rental car would be a lottery I'd say. And rental car is worse than good owner with full dealer service history. (I really don't know what 3rd party garages do to one's car, took my old Subaru WRX to all garages all over town and all they want to do is to test drive it and in the end when I took it back to the dealer they found so many things wrong with it that the other garages didn't check for. YMMV I guess.)

 

Serviced like clockwork does not mean the internals are not beaten to death. I'd say oil change on schedule. The rest - YMMV.

Make sure you understand the servicing requirements to maintain cover.  When I looked at breakdown insurance it required servicing at twice the manufacturer recommended frequency by an approved workshop who were reputedly very expensive.

I will share my experience. 

 

Bought a Ssangyong car, ex demo model off the taupo yard. Had done 15,000kms

 

Salesman at Napier branch said I had a 100,000km warranty, or 3 years, whichever came first. 

 

At 105,000kms on the clock, the transmission blew itself to bits. $8,200 it cost to repair. 

 

Their argument is that while they were demoing my car on the taupo yard, they were using up my warranty. 

 

Do Not Buy a SsangYong vehicle

 

No consumer guarantees act because it was purchased for business use. 

 

The mechanical breakdown warranty would have helped me, and I would have taken it if the salesman had offered it since it would have only added a few dollars to the monthly HP cost and now I regret not asking for it. 

 

Oh Did I say Do Not Buy a SsangYong vehicle? 

Just need to make that clear.

Shame on them for not covering an issue 5,000km out of warranty but of course the warranty is used up during the demo.

That is why they are cheaper!

I've tested a 3 year old Daewoo with 105,000 ks on it once at Turner's Auction.

 

The transmission was buggered. (Manual car). (It was clunking and had the sound and feel of fluid slushing around in it!)

 

That really got me alarm bells going - never went near a Non Hyundai/Kia korean car since that day. It helped that they were and are still butt ugly anyway.

Mind you I hired a Jucy Fiat Punto (brand new tht year, with about 20,000ks on the clock) with a dual clutch gear box - I had stopped having wet dreams about dry clutch dual clutch gear boxes since that day. Wonder what it would take to stop the wet dreams of high performance German AWDs ....

Daewoo have been owned or controlled by GM for ages. For that reason alone I wouldn't trust Daewoo for quality. And that is also the reason why a lot of the smaller Holden models are re badged Daewoos.

The Punto doesn't have a dual clutch transmission - it's a robotic manual.
