I have a friend who has a Hyundai Santa Fe - two years old - that she has told me has live traffic updates in it's inbuilt satnav.

 

I think she said it is a subscription based system, though...but it is free for her for now.

My three year old Mazda3 supposedly has live traffic on the native satnav but it's useless because the internet connectivity via my phone doesn't work. It's one of a few things that has made me gradually get increasingly annoyed with the vehicle over the time that I have owned it. 

 

I don't intend to pay $600 to have CarPlay retrofitted to this vehicle, but I will make sure that my next vehicle has it because on rare occasions when I need maps I would much rather have them from my phone than the vehicle's satnav. At this stage the Hyundai Ioniq hybrid is looking like my preferred option for an eventual replacement.

 

 

 

 

I have driven an Ioniq and LOVED it...if the range suits you, it would be a great replacement for your Mazda 3 :-)

But an Aussie-specced Kona?

Australia is way behind NZ for EVs and chargers. I've been over there a lot the past year.....and it's like 5 years ago in NZ for EVs other than Tesla. You can't buy them. You couldn't import them used (though that is changing now).

The Bridges / Ross mess may have slowed down some policy announcements. Who's going to waste the opportunity for good policy coverage in the midst of a mess like that? :-)  

 

 

 

 

You are so right....it is AMAZING how far behind OZ is in adopting EVs.

 

Doubly amazing that, given they have SO MUCH sunshine, they could be charging their cars for free quite easily.

 

Plus, most OZ households can get subsidies to install renewable energy systems (as well as small businesses), I believe.

 

You'd like to think that that would be incentive enought to buy an EV...but, as you say, pretty much the only EVs you can buy there are Teslas which aren't as "cheap" as other EV options available in the rest of the world (and here in NZ).

Are you referring to the EV or hybrid variant? We have the Ioniq EV at work and I am quite impressed with it but it wouldn't be suitable for me as I only do long distance driving.

 

The hybrid looks good for my needs but I am wondering about its highway performance, particularly for overtaking and hill work. I know that the 'combined system output' offers about 100kw and 265Nm but I'm guessing it can only sustain that for a certain period of time until the battery is depleted.

THe golden days of PV subsidies in OZ are long gone, and there are all sorts of calls to speed up the phase outs..

I wish we had subsidies here....plus better encouragements to buy EVs too. 

 

I have pretty much laid a bet with friends that, as soon as I take delivery of my Kona, the NZ government will announce some form of subsidy for buying them! That will be just my luck (as an early-ish adopter) haha

The incentive is not paying fuel taxes. For people who can afford EVs that's probably enough.

It's not a bad idea. It's only $7k more than the standard hybrid so even with the minimal amount of urban driving I do it would probably still break even financially.

 

The only prerequisite would be getting the body corporate to allow me to install a charger in my car park as discussed earlier in this thread.

Is it odd/unusual that Hyundai use headunits that are not able to be updated? That their firmware is specific to global regions?

 

If so, I wonder why they (and other manufacturers?) do that.

An EV will generally kick a dino-burner's arse to the verge on hills and for acceleration. Especially at altitude like in the Southern Alps where EVs not needing any air to operate is a real benefit.

As for the Ioniq EV, you'd only need to stop for 20 minutes every two hours or so.......and that's called safe driving.

 


As for distances....I drive my Nissan LEAF Auckland to Opotiki every 10 days or so. That's 320km each way.....for about $12 in charging each way with ChargeNet. Once you get used to it, it's great. I recently drove a BMW i3 from Christchurch to Kaikoura (via Culverden) and back (via Amberley). This was after work in the evening. Home by bed time. 

Most barriers to adopting electric cars (other than money) are mental.....not actual. No one wants to hear that, of course......They tend to prefer their mental barriers to be seen as actual. :-)

I don't mind the stopping - I just need to be confident that I can access a charger when I need one. I think the Ioniq has a stated range of 200km but that could realistically mean 170km if you have ancillaries running, and you only get 80% of that range on a fast charger so would give you 136km of range at a worst case scenario.

 

The North Island looks well covered for that range but the South Island has big gaps around Murchison/St Arnaud/Westport/Springs Junction/Hanmer Springs. It would be good to see the charging infrastructure improved in that area.

 

Out of interest, do you ever encounter chargers that you can't use because they're out of order, or idiots have parked combustion engine vehicles in front of the charger? How often do you have to queue to use a charger? One of my biggest reservations is having a near-flat battery and not being able to use the nearest charger for these reasons.

 

It's a shame they don't make a 300km variant of the Ioniq. There is a big gap in both driving range and price between the Ioniq and Kona EVs and there must be a captive market for something in between.

A recent update on FB about the navigation problem with the Kona Elite EV provided some interesting information:

 

"Also asked (Hyundai) if they have sorted the navigation for Aussie and NZ and they replied that these Kona's are assembled in Czech Republic and they have a hardware incompatibility with Australasian software options for the navigation system, they did not say they had an answer for this or that it was fixed."

 

This posting also reported that there was a delay in delivering their Kona Elite EV and that it won't now be delivered until March 2019. Hyundai said this was because they were having trouble getting batteries.

 

The posting also said that another reason may be that Norway has 20,000 cars on order with only 1,000 delivered!

Thank you for posting this info from Facebook (I am not a member of Facebook and, having held out this long, reckon I will never join...I certainly don't want to with all their data leaks etc haha).

 

I did not know the Irish-specced Kona's we are getting here are built in the Czech Republic! I have also been told there is some sort of hardware/firmware problem that means the units will not be able to be converted to NZ maps. I will see how often it bugs me not to have in-built satnav...Apple CarPlay will be good, but it does require me to always have my phone plugged in which I am not inclined to do, currently).

 

I am hoping to have my Kona Elite tomorrow! At least, sometime this week...I can't wait for the almost 5 month wait to be over :-)

 

When they started taking orders in Norway, there was an instant rush to get a Kona. I'm sure most of the world's Kona EVs will be going to Norway as it is such a great place to own one with a fantastic charging network PLUS many incentives to buy an EV instead of an ICE.
