I find in Auckland, AT card users will just board the bus anyway and make their way through the small gap (usually the cash payer will stand closer to the driver). I usually do this, although I am quite skinny so it's not a big problem for me.

 

I do think AT needs to get on with converting high usage routes to AT card only operation during the peak. Double-decker routes on weekdays between 6-9 and 3-6 would be a good start.

It's not easier. It gets on the way for you when turning around and it will hit people at head height. 



Wearing a backpack on your back in close quarters overseas is a good way of losing stuff out of it. It's usually possible to sling it round on your front.

I forgot people that swipe their whole wallet then only after the "multiple cards detected" message, get their card out to swipe it by itself.

I'm loving the snapper card thing. I get a bus roughly once a month and its awesome watching 95 percent of people zap themselves on and sit down within 5-10 seconds. 

 

But yeah, compared to a train it's cramped and bumpy.

Just come back from London. No cash on buses there now. Either Oyster card or contactless payment (Visa / Mastercard), or payment app (Google / Apple, plus a couple of UK bank apps).

 

Back here, there is a significant difference in the speed of boarding between services that use Snapper and whatever system Mana/Newlands use in Wellington.

I used Apple Pay on the tube in London last month and it worked brilliantly. I wish we could do that in Wellington rather than having to regularly top up a Snapper card using those horrible unreliable kiosks.

I can't say much about what it is like inside Wellington buses as it is too hard to get them to stop if I am my wheelchair frown

 

From the outside, I am convinced that all their drivers are red/green/amber colour deficient.

This changes from 15 July when switch to Snapper.

Out of interest I have a snapper feeder so I can top-up at home. Super fast and convenient so even if I could, there is no need to top-up on bus.

Christchurch lets you do auto top up.

When balance drops below $10 it tops up amount that you’ve set from credit card.

It works good.

My bugbear is that most buses don't display route information internally. 

 

So on a route you are unfamiliar with it's unclear when your stop is coming up and you need to push the button to get off.  A simple display panel showing this information would solve the problem and I've seen this solution used widely.  Just the next two stops would be enough.

 

The airport flyer has voice over, but a visual display woudl be helpful to more people..

Hard bloodybhard is it to figure out if the light is yellow you won’t make it through this intersection. In this case he stopped for the second light, but sometimes they carry on even after the cross signal has turned on.

To be fair I am really surprised the NFC standard didn't consider at all the case of people carrying multiple NFC cards. I would have thought some sort of collision detection/avoidance system and/or having different frequencies/channels would have been included in the standard (at least as an option if it increases the production cost of cards) to allow multiple cards to communicate at the same time. But no, the NFC standard assumes people only carry one magical NFC card that somehow does everything from A to Z. *face palm*

 

It's the reason I always have to take cards out of my wallet—I have four NFC cards most of which cause interference. Mastercard, AT, Storage King and my work access card. AT looks to introduce the option of using V/MC at some point (probably years away) but that still leaves the other two which I suspect will continue to be independent NFC cards for many years to come.
