I think Lime Scooters are great and they have really sparked a cottage industry that was struggling to make real headway - the private scooter sales industry.

After a few Lime rides, I have succumbed myself and now own a scooter of my own, which takes me two KM to the bus station and two KM back, as well as encouraging me to get off the bus earlier and ride two KM to the office along AKL's waterfront...

If this takes off like it has for me, cities around the country could potentially see less cars on the streets during rush hour (although I am painfully aware that it's not convenient for all).

I think the Lime scooters will be 50/50 used properly and abused in Dunners by the students...like pretty much everything. I can see my nephew being one of those that will have a few beers and give it a fang down Castle Street while a lit firework cascades from his bum - and my elderly parents in Mosgiel complaining about the said antics when they read it in the ODT...

k1w1k1d:

How long before someone tries to see if they have enough power to get to the top of Baldwin Street, and how fast they come down.

Drunk, after a pub crawl - then complain to the NZ Herald that scooters should be regulated to prevent dumb people like themselves doing what they did.

You gotta love the wide eyed naivety of local politicians.....

The Mayor of Dunedin is hoping "common sense" will stop anyone trying to ride a Lime scooter down the world's steepest street.

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2019/01/dunedin-mayor-dave-cull-hopes-common-sense-will-stop-students-riding-lime-scooters-down-baldwin-street.html

Given they are still going down Baldwin st in wheelie bins ( and this was after someone died doing it) , I don't hold out much hope that "common sense" will prevail.....

The app still says Dunedin is unserviced and do not leave a vehicle in the grey area; when you zoom out, Auckland, Hutt Valley and Christchurch all have the Lime symbols, but Dunedin doesn't

Took my first one for a ride; damn they are heavy

I wasn't confident putting both feet on the board while travelling along the footpath due to other pedestrians, so I would push off and then leave my leg "hanging" waiting for the next opportunity to brake and stop (which was very frequent)

If I was in an area without pedestrians or traffic/traffic lights I could see the benefit but to try and get around the CBD, at lunch time I am better off just walking

Yes - in a busy CBD they can be unwieldy, but they are great fun when you can open them up and rip along...

Struggled up first part of Pitt street needing the odd bit of pushing with one foot but zips along great on flat.
Definitely an option for when I'm too tired to walk home and would usually catch a taxi.

Baldwin street has got nothing to worry about. I doubt these could get 1/3 of the way up.

Interesting to see the movement away from center of town and into hills at end of day.

Its not the going up people are worried about,

its inebriated students lugging them over a shoulder ( or stuffing them in the back of an uber) and then having races down that are probably the biggest fear...

Well students are known to ride rubbish bins down baldwin street so you cant legislate against gross stupidity.

In either case their are very few students in Dunedin for the next few more weeks so the idiots you see on the roads will be the local idiots.

(stupidity doesnt stop over the summer holidays but the age of the idiots increases slightly. When the locals do something stupid the ODT says nothing, when a student does something stupid its the end of the world. Several years ago there was an article about the number of arrested over orientation weekend and it wasnt until the last paragraph where it was noted that 75% of the arrested people were not students....)

ps the lime scooters are rather heavy - you would have to be quite dedicated to carry it up balwin street

Cue images of people riding down Balwin St.
Didn't take more than a few hours.

Didn't make it the whole way down without dabbing - doesn't count.

These were thick in the student areas today. Saw about 2 a minute going past at lunchtime. Every time I looked out a window there was someone riding one.

Not sure what I think of them yet. I'm seriously concerned about hitting one. The people I saw riding them weren't taking much notice of their surroundings.
