I encountered a few in Lower Hutt and since my son who's studying in Auckland had an account, tried one out. Haven't ridden a scooter in years but it didn't take long to get the hang of it. But I can see the potential for accidents and they can go quite fast and they are not that controllable (well not for me :-) ) But it was a pretty cool experience. I would not ride one on the street and the footpath is dangerous for pedestrians so it's a challenge to use them, to be sure.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Coming into work this morning, I parked up at my normal spot and grabbed a Lime and road it on the road/footpath
It was a way better experience being able to go a decent pace (around 20km/hr) and without having to stop every 3 seconds for people who don't listen to the bell - I had to go on a slightly longer detour to get to work as I went around the Princes St "hill" - even the upward slope of Lower Stuart Street saw the speed drop rapidly

Is it worth the $4-5 cost on an otherwise free walk?

Were you smiling at the end of your ride?

Then the answer is yes...

Thanks for the code. I rode up the hill to Roslyn this evening. Almost made it to the top. The scooter had about 80% battery when I started but ran out of juice 10m from Highgate. Started at Pak 'n Save.

Took a more gentle route and had to assist it a few times but in managed to go 10km/hr or more most of the way unassisted.

Got some strange looks from people not expecting to see one being driven in the suburbs up here.

Something that can go 40 kph but

Doesn't need a helmet
Doesn't need licence
Ok to go on footpaths whereas kids have to cycle on roads with cars

Impressive!

Ha I do now. But Hayes Mag with 200mm rotors were more than enough. Rumour was someone did 100kmh but my gearing was only good up to about 40kmh. Then it was just a speed tuck.

I'm wondering how easy it is to pick one up and remove the GPS and other smarts and score yourself a scooter? Have they put much thought into protecting them from being stolen?

An interesting read. Apparently there are hundreds of abandoned scooters in America and so it's easy to get one legally and convert it for private use.

The scooters have invaded Mosgiel; so after work I must give it a try on the flat

Does anyone know what happens when you run out of credit and don't have auto recharge on your account - does the Scooter just stop working or does your account go into negative balance?
