afe66: Several already been spotted in Dunedin near the hospital.

Is that because they have meetings with a cardiologist after they made their payment? :)

I don't see how you'd replace the practicality of a wagon with a Model 3. It's the reason I can't seriously consider one.

Yeah, it would be a great replacement for our Leaf, but that still leaves me with an ICE-powered car, which is what I want to move away from.

When BEVs in this size segment do start arriving, what's the bet anyway they'll be in SUV bodies, rather than wagons - I'm part of an ever-decreasing group that prefer the looks and handling of a wagon over an SUV.

If BMW had a 3 Series Wagon with decent handling and performance, they would already have my money.

The Jag I-Pace is a phenomenal achievement, but with the kit to make it comparable to my wagon, it's upward of $180K which isn't achievable for most people.

This would be my choice of BEVs if 1. I had the money and 2. I was to cope (and convince my wife of coping) with an SUV.

A bit off-topic, sorry, but, given you've recently driven one, what other vehicles would you compare the interior and boot space of an iPace with?

The Model Y looks a bit like a wagon version of a Model 3. It's styled more to have a crossover look but it looks very much like a Model 3 they pumped more air into and put a hatch on. However, we probably won't see it in NZ until 2021. It starts at US$39k which currently converts to around NZ$61k...so after transport costs and GST it should hopefully qualify for the upcoming EV subsidy that year.

With regards to the Model 3, whether it will work for you or not I guess depends how full your wagon is when you go on holiday, etc. If the boot space of the wagon is packed to capacity then no, you're not going to get that all in a Model 3 while also having four people in the cabin. However, you could always get the roof racks and put one of those Thule things on the top for extra capacity - it will have some impact on the range tho.

My biggest concern is size, though - it would be replacing a Mazda 6 wagon, and so would be needing to meet the same need of taking a lot of crud on holidays; my sense is that the cabin space of the 3 would be fine for a family of four, but boot space (even when combined with the froot) would be significantly reduced

How often do you holiday? If it's every weekend or once a month, then I understand. But if you're going once or twice a year, perhaps hiring a car to suit the trip would be an option?

Most people that have a wagon don't just require that for a holiday. Could be DIY gear, sporting goods, etc. If it was me I;d either buy an EV wagon when they turn up, or if that set on a Tesla, buy a small covered trailer, to be the "wagon"

Damn, so much want. Better half would kill me for prioritising this over getting us out of renting though if I could spend this much.

But I'm not jealous of anyone here or that I see driving around in a Tesla, I'm impressed. Much more so than seeing a large ICE Porsche or merc. When it comes down to it, I'm happy to see someone else around in an EV regardless of make.

The price has gone up, now $77,500 (including ORC) for Standard Range Plus, from $75,000.

Expected since the NZD is weakening against the USD. Still annoying for people who are about to order, though the price may come down if the NZD strengthens.

I'm fairly surprised they didn't advertise the price increase happening more since they're doing a huge push for orders and deliveries before the end of the month for their quarterly results. For some people, saving the $2k increase may have been the tipping point to pull the trigger sooner.

They over-egged the Autopilot....and no way does it time a green light. Otherwise.....good article.

Saw my first Model 3 in the wild in NZ this morning. It was eastbound on Thornton Rd, about 10km west of Whakatane. My dashcam caught it. This particular car is a blue Standard Plus and was rego'd on September 9th, so must have *just* been picked up by the owner in the last few days.
