yeah, i just took old vintage to get a wof. strange it just failed on two ball joints, despite its only ever gets driven to the wof place and back (i would love those 1 year wof for it). even stranger is one of them is new that i put in years ago.

The change to 12 month wof for classics 40 yr and older is waiting for the Minister's announcement. Expected in May.

OK, because I got bored, I read the rule and found the relevant bits:

7.3(5) A motor vehicle (other than one in Schedule 3) that exceeds 2 m in width or, with its load, extends more than 1 m on either side of the longitudinal centre-line of the vehicle, must be fitted with one pair of forward-facing position lamps.

The trailer is a motor vehicle because:

Part 2 Definitions says

Motor vehicle has the same meaning as in section 2(1) of the Act.

The Act, being the Land Transport Act 1998, which defines a motor vehicle as:

motor vehicle—

(a) means a vehicle drawn or propelled by mechanical power; and (b) includes a trailer;

Table 7.1 then defines if the lights need to meet a standard. It won't paste in easily here, but for vehicle classes TA (very light trailer to 750kg gross) and TB (light trailer to 3500kg gross) if it is made after 1 Jan 2006 they need to be to standard, made prior need to be substantially white/amber.

So in summary, if the caravan is over 2m wide, it needs the lights. Because it's older than 2006 they don't need to meet a specific standard.

Want to know how high to put them?

7.3(6) The lamps in 7.3(3), 7.3(4) and 7.3(5) must be fitted at a height not exceeding 1.5 m from the ground, or at a height not exceeding 2.1 m from the ground if the shape of the bodywork of the vehicle makes it impracticable to comply with the 1.5-m height restriction.

EDIT: and the rule is from 2004, so has probably needed those lights since at least then.
