Hey Guys,
I've been on my republic for 7 days now and I'm loving UFB, and that Asus router is awesome! ill never go back to linksys.

Anyway Im just wondering do I need to organize the disconnection of my old services with Slingshot or will My republic sort that?

They should but it is best you contact Slingshot to make sure it has happened.

Are your old services UFB or copper?

If it's copper your old ISP isn't going to have any knowledge of you moving, and MR aren't going to know who your old ISP was so you'll need to lodge a disconnection yourself.

If it's fibre your old ISP will be aware, but it always pays to call to ensure they're correctly billing you for the end of service.

its always best to make contact with your original ISP atleast 30 days before moving. Some ISP's require 30 days notice of cancellation.

The loosing notification from Chorus isn't counted as cancellation for some ISPs.

So need to be careful.

Also Note here for any end user's who are not aware (With ANY RSP):

The loosing service provider is not going to take the gaining service provider calling them directly or sending a letter that says they are taking over the services (Think about it for a minute)
The only person who can cancel your connection is you, always call your old SP and confirm your account is shut down, regardless if its copper to copper, copper to fibre, fibre to copper or fibre to fibre, billing mistakes happen, people forget to run loss of service orders to chorus/LFC's. Always check saves headaches later.

 I am not a fan of 30 day delay letters on fibre connections (You cannot guarantee a connection date on fibre trust me) copper is alot better with this as the infrastructure is pretty much already there  either:

 

 

     

  1. Suck it up get charged twice for your first month put through your service cancellation once you KNOW fibre is connected.
  2. Put in a 30 day delay for the approximate date it connects, run the risk you will be out of internet services for a a few days to a few months (a few months is rare but it does happen between council/property owner permissions and broken poles if aerial fed, go figure.)

 


TLDR: Always confirm your old services are disconnected, RSP's place nice with each other (Most of the time :) ) but they're still competitors and wont take loss of service messages directly from another RSP.

This is not necessarily true for all providers. I was disconnected from Spark when MYR requested and ported my phone number prematurely over to their systems. I couldn't get reconnected to Spark without signing up again.

You are misinformed.

If another RSP requests a number port (known as the GSP, Gaining Service Provider), and provides the correct details in the port request (as provided to them by the customer porting) RSPs will, on the whole, cancel the attached services automatically.  Broadband churn (eg. ADSL/VDSL/UFB circuits) if it's same-for-same has a similar process.

Billing, ETF (Early Termination Fees) and notice periods are another matter, and are the main reasons why the customer should contact the LSP (Losing Service Provider) directly, so that there are no surprises.

If you port a Spark POTS number Spark will discontinue all services on the line (both POTS + Broadband). This policy is pretty unique to them as they do not offer a naked service (well they do, but it still has POTS on). With the vast majority of ISPs out there if you move to another provider and simply port your number it will not result in all services being discontinued.
