Hey guys,
I've been having random router hangings and I've finally been able to reproduce it and I was wondering what your though are if the router is faulty or not. This issue definitely hasn't casued all the hangs as its happened when no one is downloading anything.
First off its on the latest firmware and I have reset the router in an attempt to fix it. I have checked the logs but there is nothing there, they wipe on reboot.

I was downloading 3 torrents through wifi on to my laptop and saving them to a server on my LAN and the router would hang
I was downloading 2 torrents through wifi on to my laptop and saving them to a server on my LAN and the router would be OK.
I was downloading 2 torrents through wifi on to my laptop and saving them to a server on my LAN and clicking "wireless" on the routers web page and it would hang
Does not matter if you are on 2.5ghz or 5ghz wifi band, results are the same.

Basic you could get the router on the front page showing the CPU usage, start 1 torrent, it would go to 25%, 2 would put it at 40% and 3 would put it 55% for a few sec then the graph would stop and the router would hang

thoughts?

If you haven't fixed this issue,
You could try putting a custom firmware on the router

http://code.google.com/p/rt-n56u/

See what happens

Hi, thanks for the suggestion, I have the exact same problem, the Asus RT-N56U router consistently hang / freeze under slightly elevated concurrent connection. It's unthinkable a modern router can't handle more then 20 concurrent connection.

As soon as upgrade to customer firmware at: http://code.google.com/p/rt-n56u/

it's rock stable. 2000+ concurrent connection and no problem for more then 30 min so far.
Previously it can't handle this load for 2 min.

I say that's extremely poor firmware engineering by Asus. I expect so much more from ASUS.

Hi,
thanks for posting, i thought I was the only one with this issue and my router was faulty.I never tried the custom firmware as I thought it would affect any warranty if I needed to send it vack.

It wasnt till last week when the My Rebublic tech said it was a becoming a common.

ASUS released a firmware on the 29th of may and im currently trialing that one, copied 25 gb over wifi and it didnt drop out though speeds didnt go over 9-10 MB/s.

I tried the new Asus firmware released at May 29th, I had high hope it will solve my problem but it didn't.
Router still experiencing random hang / freeze with more then 20 concurrent connections. I'm about to have 6+ people moving into my house and I can't control how they use the internet. I can't restart the router every 5 min.

I had the same concern about customer firmware, but I had a closer look at that customer firmware software project (I'm a software engineer myself), and those guys know what they are doing. The project follow all the best practices of open source project and the software modules contained in each firmware version is very well documented. Plus looking at the extra features they added to the customer firmware, I' sure all geeks would be intrigued. Lastly they have very detailed instruction on what to do if firmware update goes pear shape. According to them you should only have that problem if there router is shut off halfway during upgrade (i.e power outage).

My routers pumped through 9-10MB/s overnight with 2000+ concurrent connection and still rock solid. Plus all the extra features comes with the firmware, I couldn't be happier and highly recommended it. I'm going to make a small donation to that open source firmware team :)

Thanks you so much for the info, I've only got 2 people and 4-5 devices so it only goes down randomly.

I'll be checking this out tonight.

Custom firmware helped with my old router - different make/model, so that's worth a shot. My Fritzbox works fine no matter what I throw at it.
