“We’ve arranged a society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. Carl Sagan 1996
If anything Ngatai was guilty of tackling the player without the ball, but players anticipate someone catching the ball all the time while making tackles.
The ball is kicked through, Dixon attacks the ball. Ngatai initially attacks the ball but then realises Dixon will get there first.
The ball bounces, Ngatai is watching the ball and Dixon. Dixon puts his hand up to catch the ball, Ngatai sees that and prepares to make the tackle. Ngatai puts his head down and makes contact around Dixons knees, and at the same time Dixon jumps into the air, causing his own loss of equilibrium. The contact was made a split second after Dixon contacted the ball, which bounced off his shoulder.
Once Ngatai realises what is happening he releases Dixon. The momentum of the contact causes the 'perception' that he has attempted some sort of lift.
If we're not careful we'll end up like the EPL, with players diving not only for penalties but also to gain a numerical on-field advantage for their team. I am in no way saying Dixon did this for that purpose, but once players know that tacklers will be carded regardless of their part in an instant, then that is a possibility.
Ok I can't link this photo directly, but you'll see the one with Dixon upside down (entirely). Any player that plays ANY part in putting a player in this position should be red carded. It's disgraceful to think that anyone would use the word "luck" to describe why a decision like that shouldn't be red. The player shouldn't be "lucky" not to get injured in this manner. Yes it's a contact sport, but it's not acrobatics. There should be no "luck" in that decision at all. He is upside down after a collision. Ngatai stood up in the tackle which made it worse than it would have otherwise been. Had he NOT have done that, he isn't getting a card at ALL. He may not have intended to do it, but he did it.
I am NOT attacking Ngatai (as a person or a player) here, it wasn't his decision what punishment he got. I don't believe for a second that he initially intended to upend Dixon, but he DID stand up in the tackle.
Intent is also not a requirement for a Red Card. Luck shouldn't be a factor in NOT getting one either.
Sanzaar confirmed late Sunday it would not take further action against Ngatai after the incident was reviewed by the duty citing commissioner.
"Naturally it was raised by the Citing Commissioner but (it was) felt there were enough elements out his (Ngatai's) control that it didn't meet red card threshold. On field yellow was appropriate," a Sanzaar spokesman said.
Finally some common sense from Sanzaar and the citing commissioner.

How disappointing. Yet another case of poor consistency.
@tukapa1 if he landed on his head/neck do you believe it would have been red?
At the end of the day the people upstairs decide the outcome that spectators and commentators can only bicker about. Who cares.
Yellows or red, red or yellow.
Penalty to team A or penalty to team B.
Penalty or no penalty - remember Scotland should (could) have beaten Australia in the RWC if not for this. And Australia could have scored to level the RWC final if Whitelock hadn't deliberately tripped their back (can't remember who it was) while the ABs we scrambling backwards with no one at home. Scotland bickered - did it change anything. Australia move on and went on to lose coz Barrett scored at the other end thanks to that very professional foul.
Yellow or red? I'd move on as soon as the ref has.

But its the {insert team name here}, and somebody has an axe to grind...

Disappointing that the 5 Hurricanes (incl 3 AB's) let themselves and their team down by failing to meet curfew. Julian is turning into a bit of a problem child I think, if you take into account 2 big weight gains and fitness issues, along with average form. May not be as big of a problem with "Wing" congestion as was originally thought. Janes heart just doesn't seem in it the way it was a couple of years ago, I suspect he allowed his non-selection for the RWC, to "defeat" him.

Some people are disciplined, some aren't. It doesn't matter whether you are at boarding school or the army, someone is bound to break the rules just coz they can't control themselves.

As a Hurricanes supporter, I'm pleased to see some of the other players getting a start. This problem becomes an opportunity for the replacements to shine. I hope that they do.
I hope that the team will beat the Reds. Their performances can vary so markedly that I don't have much confidence that they will win even against the weakest teams.

I agree, it's nice to see some of those lesser known players get a start regardless of the reason. If Fridays showing against the Crusaders was any indication, a blind and hog tied Hurricanes side could beat the Reds.

Oh, how we hope. It will be so funny if we are disappointed yet again.

I think that honestly, the Hurricanes are missing Conrad Smith more than all the players combined. I believe we will have a similar issue with the AB's if they go with the pairing of Fekitoa and someone else. I think they need Crotty or a similar "solid" tactical thinker in that position (Centre), with less show, but more dependable on defence and distribution.
I am happy to be proven wrong of course.
I'd be pretty keen to see what a pairing of Ngatai and Crotty would be like, though I don't see them excluding Fekitoa.
