I can't find anywhere that says Messam is not allowed to compete ...

Practically I am unsure how it would work. Even if he got on a plane this second, he would arrive and pretty much have to walk on the field right?

He's already in Rio. Just not 'officially' part off the NZ Olympics team.

And we're not out of it yet. Have to beat GB and hope Kenya can beat Japan. So the patient isn't dead, but better warm up the defibrillator!

Oh, my mistake, is there a reason then, why he can't be used as a reserve?

Kenya would normally beat Japan? (I don't follow 7's too much).

I heard on the radio that you can only replace one member of your squad. They had 2 tournament ending injuries, so bad luck.

Sione Malia replaced SBW, so they couldn't replace Webber.

Remember the last world cup. South Africa would normally beat Japan right? The margins in 7s these days are so small any one of 5 nations could win the Gold. So expect almost any result from any given game.

It's a bit weird then that they allow for more than 1 reserve to be named in the squad?

Edit : I do agree though that the margins between teams is small, so any result is possible

I remember that game, watched it live (on tv), screamed almost as loudly as when BB kicked the ball through to dive on it in the final :)

It was a fluke though I'd say, and I'd say this will be the only time Japan beats NZ in 7's for years.

Here's hoping Kenya can recover.

If Japan beat Kenya does that put us out of contention for gold, or out of contention for a medal at all ?

I wasn't aware McAlister was a specialist 10, I thought he played 10, 12 and played some 15 too. Slade wasn't a Specialist 10, he played Wing, and Fullback, and Halfback from time to time. I thought BB played full back first esp at school and switched to 10.

If I'm wrong, I obviously stand corrected.

The point I'm making is they have the second best available fly half on the bench. If that guy can play elswhere that's great but the reason they pick them is that they are the second best fly half. When McAlister played Steven Donald was starting so it's not exactly like there was a lot to choose from.

When Slade was picked he was considered the second best fly half - i 2011 they started him with Cruden on the bench in the world cup for just that reason.

There also seems to be something wrong in the mens 7s setup at the moment. It appears, from the outside only, that the players are getting sick of Tietjans. He was unable to get many All Blacks to commit to the 7s this year and comments by players like Kurt Baker indicate that all isn't well.

Yeah I wondered when I heard about that. I think he is heading the way of Dick Tonks. Too hard on people, maybe getting grumpy in his old age. Hard to argue with his results though. (historically)

OK fair enough. I guess my comments were based on how much value the AB's have placed on utility value. I guess time will tell what happens with Cruden based on that.

The game of 7s have changed massively since the day it was announced as an olympic sport. Suddenly anybody can beat anybody at any given day. It appears they scout for failed 100, 200, 400m international sprinters and teach them how to catch an oval ball and away they go. Other than England who goes to the gym and finds the guys on the most steroids ... and NZ who picks SBW (he is not naturally one I would pick as a 7s game winner).

Wow I was going to say bye bye Sevens next flight home -

but it turns out we managed to squeeze into the quarters as the best loser ...

from not following too much sevens I gathered that since it was announced as an Olympic sport we have been - not necessarily on the decline, but stagnant while the rest of the world caught up and surpassed with their speed play, our speed seems to get slower by the month!

Don't see us in the final to be honest, though to quarters or not ...

We were never in this tournament! In fact as I said we were on the decline while the rest of the world were on the incline - let's see who peaks for the gold. I agree best chance for Fiji to get their is it first ever gold (or first ever medal)
