joker97: Ireland and Australia win big wow. Who would have thought. Flash in the pan? Let's see...

I haven't watched it but the scoreline says it all. No flash in the pan. As I've said all along this is not the best team in 50 years as phil Gifford said along with other similar statements. It's a new look team rebuilding. Wins over second tier teams or top tier teams who are playing very very average doesn't a champion make. I have no doubt this new look team has huge potential. But not yet. You can't expect new players to be equal or better than who they replaced and they can't gel immediately . This game proves that. As I think was said today by z past England coach I think, The AB's are carried away with their own publicity. Again I haven't watched it yet but no excuse. Outplayed or skillefld Or out thought I can't comment yet. In fact when I read the best team in 50 years I thought what an insult to Richie and the other old guard that left.

I imagine you would scoff at others making comments on something they weren't actively commenting on, I am wondering why you do the same?

Commenting the way you have, starting your comments with "I didn't watch it" is almost mind-boggling.

ok I'm going to make an inciting comment, getting ready to run ...

on a day the ref was truly impartial the ABs finally got the result that truly reflects the state of play. usually the opposition is stymied by poor refereeing.

Interesting, I felt there were a number of times where the Irish were allowed to keep the ball at the back of the Maul much longer than the AB's, for example.

I guess it's a reflection of the dominating team being given preference, which is usually the AB's.

I am not saying it was the difference, but I felt it required some response.

although, ref aside, the ABs defence were on holiday, missed tackles and ball watching and all.

Credit to ireland however, they came to play and play they did. the last 10-12 mins were very exciting!

Yeah, they deserved the win. I was shocked how easily Ireland scored that last try. I really felt we were going to win when we got cranked up. I wasn't worried until the last 8 minutes honestly.

I fully expect the AB's to SPANK Ireland in a Fortnights time. They have long memories and powerful motivation along with fierce skill. I don't consider this to be a major problem. It's not as suggested by tdgeek and some others, a sign of impending doom. The dream run had to end sooner or later, and an occasional loss is an excellent reminder to the team that there isn't as big of a difference as one might think.

2nd American game ever? I would call out unique USA factors.

Edit: Hasten to add, massive respect for the Irish team.

For the second time, my comments about this new side began before this season started, and its about that, not this match. Although at 40-29, thats clearly not a lucked in win. Having watched it now, good match. A good match for the AB;s to be brought back to build on.

Man, where have I said its impending doom? My comments have ONLY been about we are winning against low ranked sides, or high ranked sides that as was said by a Smith article yesterday, inept sides. Now we played a side that played really well, took it to us, and we faltered. Thats all I have been saying, i.e. this is not the best side in 50 years. Thats all.

I thought the last try was smart. An AB type try. The commentators were picking that they will keep the scrum and push over, but they showed flare, and surprised us.

We will win against Ireland in 2 weeks, but Im picking it will be close-ish. It isn't like we can pick holes in them, its about knowing they will play to win, show flare. Many lower sides play us to hold on. They don't pay to win they play to restrain us. Hold on as best we can, but IRE's attitude was we will play to win, and that pressure got results. We faced a team that took us by surprise, and I think that pressure was the issue, rather than us playing average. We were taken on. They had possession, and thats good om them, but also we couldn't find a way to get our share. So, next game, they will pay as hard, should be a great one. I reckon a 30-20 AB win will be a great result for IRE all things considered.

Pressure by IRE. By the scoreboard. But now we know what to expect next time. This match I think might be worth a great deal to us from here on.

To me, this is what happens when you take the V8 power out of the AB forward pack (Whitelock, Retallick & Romano) and replace it with a misfiring straight 4. My evidence, losing 5 out of 8 of your own lineout throws. The fact that Scott Barrett had an immediate impact when he came on only reinforces this.
The selectors/coaches rolled the dice a little with their lock/loose forward mix and came up short.
As for the defence in the last 5 minutes, if you looked at the jersey numbers in the back line, you may as well have just thrown the numbers in the air and where they landed, was the position they played.
Next week against Italy will see Retallick back and probably a start for Scott Barrett, Leinert-Brown, Perenara, Dagg, Crockett and (insert name here) at first-five.

Yes, I agree. At the end of the match they had so many players out of position (Ardie on the wing for crying out loud). It's not reasonable to suggest that missing players and further lynchpin players like Crotty and Moala being off the field, wouldn't have an impact.

We were pretty set to break Irish hearts at one point.

Don't under estimate that crowd factor. The crowd with their singing & support was immense.

When we started to come back at them, they were really getting into it, but also getting the same feeling which they've had before where the AB's destroy their hope.

We looked sluggish, but I'll have to watch the game again on TV when I get home to see how bad we were. It seemed to me and a couple of kiwis in the crowd that Barrett needed to put a few kicks over the top / through their rush defence.

In the end, I think they out passioned us, and we didn't do the basic skills well enough (catch & pass) but agree with Moody comments. He & Franks have just don't seem to keep their heads when the pressure is on.

Do you think they would have won if we had even one of our 2 preferred locks and or hadn't lost our entire midfield?

I don't believe any of the teams in the RC played to contain us, yet we obtained 6 bonus point wins. Maybe Italy will try and limit us, but I expect another big scoreline there regardless.

Who is your pick of the best team of the last 50 years?

On another unrelated note, I believe the coaches need to have a serious conversation with Moody. He is exceptionally lucky he didn't get a red card for that. His discipline recently hasn't been near good enough, though I suspect that is because, like Dane Coles who went through a similar thing a few years ago, the Coaches have asked for more aggression from him.
