networkn: I can't strongly enough state how important I think head gear like Matt Todd wears is. It's not going to solve all issues and I understand why players don't like them, but MT is one of the premium 7's in the world and he plays fine with them on. Broken bones heal, broken brains, not so much.

There have been numerous studies which have conclusively proven that head gear has no significant effect on concussion. That headgear is good for stopping cuts and munted ears, it does nothjng to prevent concussion. The best piece of gear to prevent concussion is a well fitted mouth guard.

Hmm, I wasn't aware of that. Do you have any references you could share?

Seems strange really because it's made of firm foam (the ones I have seen) and surely bone on bone is worse for the brain than bone on foam, even if it only absorbs 10%?

Pretty horrible conditions in the end at Eden Park but both teams continued with trying to play dry weather rugby in the wet. So lots of handling errors.
I must admit to being pretty annoyed when the Blues try came from the ball being played on the ground (player must regain his feet, not just up on his knees). And then at the other end of the field when a Chiefs try was thwarted by Blues players tackling while on the ground. No wonder Cane was blowing up at the ref.
In the end Cruden's missed kicks cost the win (again). When McKenzie slotted the first one over I thought they would let him continue. I guess they were lucky that Francie's radar was off. I hope Dave Rennie gives Laulala a good slapping for some really stupid penalties.
Bless could only ever be spoilers, and they did that tonight.

I agree.

I was pretty annoyed at the amount of handling errors. Although I preferred the Blues to win, I might be the only person happy with the draw because I didn't think that either team deserved to get more game points than the other.

As a neutral, I agree (although I wasnt watching with 100% concentration). I thought a draw was a fair result.  I do feel sorry for the Blues (and any other NZ team that fails to make the finals) because we're head and shoulders above many of the other conferences.

I'm not really neutral because I want the Hurricanes to win Super Rugby again. So a Blues win would be no threat but I actually wanted them to win to get more respect in NZ.

I really expect every NZ team to win every game against overseas opposition. But I'm always concerned that a committed opposition team might only need a handful of passes to stick to take our heads off. There have been some close runs already this season. Now I feel like the NZ advantage is increasing the motivation to improve in the other conferences so we might see a significant upset very soon.

Its for these reasons I think they need a challenge system similar to hockey.  It would get rid of the moaning to the reff from every man and his dog, and would also reduce the number of blunders because lets be honest you cant be everywhere on the park.

Interestingly the reff missed the the knockdown by Retellik inside the last 10, the sideline reff called it but only as a knock on - clearly he knocked it down.  If there was consistency comparative to the season that would have been a penalty and yellow card. Instead three phases later Chiefs scored after blues fudged the ball.

Cheeky beggars, surely Qantas should be saying "we hope NZ stomps you in every game". :)

Australias Test Squad was announced tonight.

Biggest surprise to me was Quade Cooper's inclusion. I honestly cannot see why they would pick him, nor anytime in the last 3 years. I assume he has incriminating evidence against the coaches or something because it can't be based on his erratic (at best) form. Whenever he is under pressure, he just crumbles.

Reece Hodge has definitely earned his place, was surprised to see such a small number of SR halfbacks included, given they have been one of the few positions performing in SR for Australia.

Nic Sterzacker was the one I thought definitely should have been there.

MITCHELL HUNT! What a super star!

The last time I celebrated that loudly was the RWC WC Final! Woot!

Well played Highlanders.

What a great game between the Highlanders and Crusaders. Possibly the best local derby of the season. While I think the draw that was snatched away at the last moment would have been a fair indication of the game, sport doesn't have to be fair. The way the Crusaders rumbled the ball up for phase after phase to get Hunt in a position to snatch the game with that drop goal was impressive.

In the other game this afternoon nothing was brought home more clearly to me than the fact that the Chiefs are built on the back of Brody Rettallick. When he and Laulala went off after their head clash in the 46th minute it marked a watershed moment in the game. The totally outclassed Warratahs were able to gain some ascendancy and claw back to deny the bonus point.
Some moments of brilliance by Lowe and Kerr-Barlow (both will be missed next year) and some Jekyll and Hyde moments from McKenzie, great runs but also the pad that didn't have to be thrown that let the 'tahs back into the game.

Just about to watch the first Lions match match, but the other thing that stood out this afternoon was how good afternoon rugby, in daylight, is.
