Once you commit into a tackle everything starts to move and it won't stop just because you mistimed the tackle. In fact if you stop moving the arm it would have looked like a shoulder charge which carries severe penalty. Of course he knew it was coming, you can hear the ref talking, he's not whispering. I can't remember what he would have hit if the arm didn't go down. Maybe he was trying to pull out, you can see the arm rotating, to prevent direct contact with 10's head.

I interpret it entirely differently. He went in from start to finish to level that player, he easily could have averted if he wanted to. Liam Squire is an enforcer, and he likes that role. The bit that got me, was the last little bit where he wraps his arm in a downward fashion, like a clotheline move.

I don't know, i don't watch a lot of rugby, let alone slow mo replays of normal vs abnormal tackles.

Of course he did, that is rugby. Players try and hit hard to put others off their game, hit them backwards so they don't have momentum / quick ball.  He could not have pulled out of that tackle without taking him with shoulder or chest. But that's the interpretation. He was in motion before the ball left the kickers foot.

Like it or not, rugby is about intimidation. Make sure the player hesitates  / looks around next time when kicking, running, passing.

It was a very late call from the TMO (unless the ref couldn't hear him)

I tried to edit, but the site is having issues (no text in quotes, cant see my text in edit, etc)

I have to quantify my views as a Highlanders fan, but the points about intimidation still stand.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I felt yellow was justified and is mostly consistent with what has been dealt with all season. I think it's possible to tackle hard and cause your opponent to be more wary without that. There were plenty of bone crushing tackles during that game I didn't have any issue with. Even the ref made comment about the "intent".

I see Jeff Wilson has come out saying the game should have been postponed. I guess because my team won, I feel that shouldn't be the case, but both teams played in the same conditions and had the same chances and whilst it was cold wet and miserable, it isn't the worst thing in the world for Rugby to be played in those conditions occasionally.

I guess he thought in better conditions the Highlanders might have run the Crusaders down?

Chiefs had to travel halfway round the world to play their quarter. The Hurricanes have to do the same for their semi. The Highlanders having to travel up on the morning of the game isn't ideal but hardly constitutes a reason to postpone the game.

The lack of crowd for the Crusaders will be a appointment, and people were told to stay home if they didn't need to travel. They postpone games in the EPL due to snow etc, not due to the ground, but it's dangerous for fans to try and get there.

Not that you can take too much from the long range forecasts but it looks like rain again in Christchurch on Thursday going into Friday so the field will be wet for Saturday then again from the Tuesday to Friday rain or showers the next week.

So if they were to get a home final against the Hurricanes it would be  forward dominated game again.

Outstanding defense by the Crusaders and some inaccurate attack by the Chiefs. Damien McKenzie was outstanding tonight, he really is a bit of a freak. The Chiefs seemed to get everything they went for in the air. Matt Todd was again incredible.

The try from the RM second tackle to ID was something that the Chiefs usually get in their games, in their favour. It was nice to see some of the luck of the bounce go the Crusaders way..

Wow, what an amazing come back by the Lions. They really turned that game around. They out Hurricaned the Hurricanes.  They look challenging to say the least.

Crusader a bit worried now eh ... well let me tell you people have won knockout games after one leg of travel. But that's not common in the final. There :)

Funny how you don't complain about the ref going back on his try call just as DM was about to take his conversion kick. Because if he nailed that it MIGHT have been a very different story. And a very whingy Crusader here.
