Outstanding defense by the Crusaders and some inaccurate attack by the Chiefs. Damien McKenzie was outstanding tonight, he really is a bit of a freak. The Chiefs seemed to get everything they went for in the air. Matt Todd was again incredible.

The try from the RM second tackle to ID was something that the Chiefs usually get in their games, in their favour. It was nice to see some of the luck of the bounce go the Crusaders way..

Funny how you don't complain about the ref going back on his try call just as DM was about to take his conversion kick. Because if he nailed that it MIGHT have been a very different story. And a very whingy Crusader here.

The ref didn't go back on his call, he didn't even ask the TMO to check it. The TMO interjected on his own. The disallowed try was a turning point in the game but the Crusaders converted their chances while the Chiefs squandered theirs. Great defence by the Crusaders. I'm kind of glad they won by more than 7 because I hate when a contentious Ref's decision decides a match. That, and with this morning's result, if the Chiefs had been forced back on an aeroplane to the Republic, they would have probably got beaten by a record score.

Which brings me to this morning's game. Barrett's yellow card was a crock. It was neither a professional foul or foul play. There was no repeated infringements and no warning had been issued. The Lions player placed the ball on Barrett's leg while he was trying to extricate himself from the ruck. A penalty at most, it materially affected the game with the Hurricanes down to 14 as the oxygen debt at altitude started to kick in. Instead of trying to hang in for the last 20 they were forced to chase the game.
I had great faith in Peyper as a ref prior to this game, but now, not so much. Hopefully Angus Gardner will be officiating the final.

All I can say is you will very soon run out of refs to officiate any of your matches :)

Refs has and will still always favour the home team, usually helping them win close matches.

It was an unlucky penalty, and because he cost a team hot on attack their chance to keep going & score, it can be a yellow card. You can't consider the act in isolation.

The penalty is what we see in every game where a player is trapped or the halfback throws the ball into him. It was just unfortunate for Barrett that it was right on a clean line break. I feel it could have been penalised only, but Peyper made his decision on if it cost the attacking momentum or not.

Riccatelli on the other hand should have been yellow carded for not getting back on side and playing the ball in the ruck just before his goal line.

This I do not agree with. Barrett, probably unintentionally completely disrupted the Lions momentum, they had the Hurricanes stretched and I felt they were about to score. I don't feel he had that much choice. Yellow cards do not always require warnings, some infringements are instant yellow.

I still rate Jaco Peyper, but I feel that Refs should not be allowed to ref in their home countries games just like a test match, because it removes the perception of bias. 3 SA refs in a play off game seems crazy, it should be reviewed.

The bottom line is that the Hurricanes lost fair and square, the Lions played smart, determined Rugby in the second half and the Hurricanes were unable to compete. They scored 40+ points in the second half. That's pretty good by any yardstick considering most people would have written off the Lions at the 30 minute mark as about to get the hiding everyone thought they would. It's a shame for the Hurricanes as they have played well all season.

On another note I was very disappointed at Dane Coles saying the Hurricanes would be cheering for the Lions this coming weekend. I feel the Crusaders deserve all NZ Rugby fans support for what has been a great season for them. Had any other team done it, the press would be literally drooling over themselves and pundits would be frothing at the mouth praising them.

Might have made a difference, might not.

Whoops i didn't realise that could happen. Which means the TMO has more influence than the ref. Who's the. tmo next week?

Heh, to be fair most if not all SA people I know say they support the AB's, but I am not sure if they just say that.

There was apparently a fair bit of Vitirol today aimed at the Crusaders on talkback according to my FIL. He was pretty surprised, and whilst I didn't hear it, it feels grim.

After all the ref complaints in the BIL series, it still seems to be every game there is a ref issue. Lose - ref issue, win = ok??

Interested to see if Crusaders can afford low possession against the Lions. They won, which was awesome, but low possession and low territory? You can win A game like that, but play 10 and its many losses.

sounds pretty condescending because someone doesn't support what I assume is your team?

I don't really support other teams apart from the Highlanders, but enjoy a good game of rugby as a neutral.

Lions do play better attacking rugby than the Crusaders - who have made big strides in that area in only a single season from the robotic Blackadder era.

it's great for either team to win the comp, Crusaders haven't won for 7? years, and Lions have never won plus have the coach departing.

as an aside, does anyone know the time of the game yet, it'll determine if it's a recording or live type of game.
