I wonder if the AB's are going to try and recall Matt Todd for the EOYT now Cane is gone for the season. I believe he could be considered if Japan was to release him, but I believe there is a policy of not picking players who are playing overseas, though having said that, my understanding was that Todd was gently encouraged by the AB's selectors. This would indicate however that he probably shouldn't be called back as they must have had a plan if Cane or Savea went down with injury, esp since Cane has had a few head knocks.  Whilst he doesn't have the youth of some of the other contenders that might be called up from NZ players currently in NZ but not part of the squad, he is a proven performer, and we really need someone of Todd/Canes ilk to do the crash and bash in the first 50 minutes of a game to wear down defences. Whilst the point has been made that there is no longer a focus on fetching the ball at the break down, I don't necessarily disagree, a few turnovers can make a big difference, esp with teams who can turn defense to attack so readily as the AB's are making a name for themselves doing...

I'd personally like to see more of Todd in Black, he has been an excellent servant for NZR and is always there or thereabouts for contention in my view.

This takes me back to the 1980s because Matt Todd seems a lot like Robbie Deans. Played some games for the All Blacks but didn't get the run that Canterbury fans clamored for.

I love your passion. But I just can't get so passionate about something I have no control over.

10/10/18 I wonder if the AB's are going to try and recall Matt Todd for the EOYT now Cane is gone for the season.

06/08/18 I also feel that AB's shouldn't have let Matt Todd get away.

24/06/18 Matt Todd was also excellent. It's a pity there is space for only 2 7's in a game. ... He is a better fetcher though.

etc.

Edit: Just in case it is not clear there is no sarcasm or irony intended.

Well, turns out they wanted him, and they got him. I wonder what deal they had to do to get him back?

Quite a few bolters, nice to see Bridge, Bryn Hall and Procter get selected. I was a little surprised at Cameron, not that he hasn't played well. Aumua there as well after a pretty reasonable Mitre 10 Cup. I am a little surprised given his fall from grace, but the AB's have been generous with second chances. I really can't understand being in the frame for the AB's and then coming back after the offseason so out of shape. To my mind that's the ultimate "screw you" to the AB's selectors.

There are so many players on this tour, I am pretty surprised I didn't get a call up.

Ethan Blackadder and David Havilli have signed for another 3 years for the Crusaders. Good work by the management team. I think Blackadder is the new Keiran Read :)  He's a bit raw right now, but heading in the right direction.

Hopefully Havilli regains the form he showed in 2017. He was pretty anonymous in 2018 for the Crusaders. I had hoped he could kick on.

It is good to see hope rewarded particularly after you've been so consistent in reminding us all. laughing I can't stop laughing about it because I thought they'd never make the effort to bring him back.

Now he has the opportunity to cement a more permanent place in the team. I am interested to see how he will perform.

I was a little surprised to be honest. Pleased, but surprised. Agreed about performance. Reality is though, neither Sam Cane nor Saveas positions in the team are in jeopardy right now, esp with the form Savea is in this year, and a third 7 isn't really the way the teams have been picked. However I still see Savea as the right option off the bench. He doesn't really strike me as the grinder that Todd/Cane do well, in breaking down defenses and softening the opposition.

I was surprised that Brad Webers star has faded so much. He certainly looked to be either the third or even second best Half back in the country for some time. I know he had a horror injury, but what I saw of him last SR season he looked to be going OK.

To fall to 6th seems harsh.

Canterbury a little lucky not to have been pinged for holding Blackadder in the ruck against Tasman. I would have been disappointed if Canterbury had lost, but ok with Tasman winning if that was the other outcome.

Ultimately though, I think Canterbury would have won regardless, they were under advantage and Tasman were nearly out on their feet.

Blackadder had an excellent match again. He's one to watch for the future I suspect.

Andrew Makalio is having the season of his life, playing in form that will have the AB's attention potentially.

Wondering if any of you feel that 51 in a EOY Squad is too many? The more I think of it, the less comfortable I feel about it. I understand they are trying to build depth, but this is quite a departure from the way it's been done in the past, which in my view has worked well.

I have fears of a lack of control and a lack of focus. Too many players to work with etc. Wouldn't surprise me if there are shenanigans/behaviour issues too.

51 is a lot, though I wonder how many will actually make it to Europe and how many will only go as far as Japan. This is the last chance to blood new players before they settle on the squad for the world cup next year.

I imagine that there won't be much difference in the number of players at the training session. They're used to having a extra players in to help with challenging the squad. Just this time the "extras" will be part of the squad.

The more I think about it, the more I'm happy for them to do what they think is worthwhile to win the World Cup again.

I don't see a big deal. They will only have 51 players together for 1 or 2 days. The extra 19 are only travelling for the second week of the tour when 22 players go on to prepare for England.

It's not about building depth, it's about giving the team the best preparation for England and having players with no jet lag ready to play.

The final three weeks off the tour is the dress rehearsal for the world cup. They are trying to give the squad the most similar preparation for the world cup they can and flying over from Japan and being jet lagged all week isn't great preparation.

Wow Akira Ioane had a blinder of a game for Auckland. If they play like that next week and Canterbury play like they did yesterday, Auckland will win.

Otago vs Hawkes Bay, what a tension-filled semi that was. HB nearly got there though ill-discipline at the end cost them dearly. Unsurprisingly, HB looked disconsolate. I really felt for them.

is it just me or all blacks vs aussies coverage is absolutely rubbish!

I thought it's Japan's show off before RWC2019, but what an awful broadcast.

for first 15-20 mins these artificial logos drove me nuts (you could not see any aussies running), after they switched these off, I noticed that angles of broadcast are absolute rubbish, they could not zoom to the action on time, could not show wider shots accordingly.

:(

Yep.

Second half is better. It almost feels like there is a different live editor controlling camera shots for the second half.
