Some nice tries in the Japan Russia game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A4F3a63_QA

wow! pretty impressive attacking moves by Russians, but one-on-one defense :(.

Barrett should take couple kicking lessons too :)

Yes, I'm Russian :D

Defense by both teams was pretty average/poor. But some of those individual tries were still impressive :)

I was going to comment that the number of kick throughs that worked well in that game was high. I guess some of that is defense, but I believe the AB's don't really work the angles of their kicks as well as some other teams.

I'm at the Dubai 7s today. Great atmosphere and the kids are having a blast at the massive splash n slide!

Hopefully the men pull finger, hey only just beat Spain at lunchtime. The women should win pretty comfortably, they looked by far the best team in the semis

I am jealous. I loved my time in Dubai (holiday only unfortunately).

Steve Hansen has announced he is leaving the head coaching job.

I think it's the right choice and expected choice, despite the fact I still feel he has plenty to contribute. You couldn't ask for better than what he has achieved. Quite special really. Very close to a 90% winning rate. Something that has never been done before as far as I am aware.

It's the most emotional I think I've ever seen him.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, given that every year there are young players who do well in SR who people incessencantly call to be part of the AB's, but it's surprising to me that so many polls I have seen in the past few days favour Scott Robertson as SH's replacement.

For my money, as big of a fan of him that I am (and I am) and even with all the success of the coaching he has had to date, I still don't think promoting him so soon is a good option. He himself has excluded himself as not ready.

I'd like to see him included in the coaching staff somewhere, but probably not as head coach. Potentially as assistant to Ian Foster etc. I feel a few more seasons at the Crusaders would be ideal. We don't really do part time roles esp as some of the international season intercedes the SR season, but it would be interesting to see him included in the end of year tour potentially somehow.

According to an article quoting O'Gara, apparently SR has expressed interest in the position (though under what time frame isn't clear from the article) but all the Crusaders coaches are off contract end of 2020 and there seems to be a bit of a shift possible where O'Gara takes over helm at Crusders and Razor takes a position inside the All Blacks of some capacity.

Wondering if it will look something like Ian Foster Head Coach, with SR as assistant through to the next RWC.

I would favour something like this I guess, with the only real concern being whether Foster can produce the fresh eyes that SH believes is required.

If they went in a completely different direction to Foster, I feel they would lose a hell of a lot of incumbent information, but I could understand Foster telling NZR to stick it if he doesn't get the nod.

I agree. I think that it will be better for him to wait to be promoted rather than to promote oneself and not get a place this time.

Interesting article about what might change in terms of staff at NZR if Foster doesn't get the Head Coach position. Potentially they could lose Shand (whom I rate as easily the best team manager in World Rugby) and Cron may also call it time (I can't think of a better Scrum coach right now or for the past 10 years).

I'm almost more worried about what significant changes in the management team would do to performance than players coming and going. It would seem reasonably likely McLeod could end up gone, esp since his early tenure hasn't exactly been an overwhelming success.

Rennie out of the AB's coaching position. I am not too unhappy with this, I don't think his coaching style would have been good for the AB's.

At the rate they are dropping, I might be getting a call from NZR after all LOL.

So, Super Rugby starts again soon.

Anyone with predictions?

I am particularly interested to see how Andrew Makalio goes for the Crusaders this season. He was pretty excellent all year, strong carries and scrummaging, some excellent offloading etc. I was surprised and impressed. Also keen to see how a few of the less experienced guys go. I'll be watching with interest Leicester Faingaanuku, Braydon Ennor and I am hoping Havilli will find the form he had in 2017, that seemed to slip a bit in 2018 which I didn't expect.

I'll also be interested to see how Aaron Smith plays this season, I am not sure he is even the third best Half back in the world any more, which is a shame because for so long he was clearly and easily the best.

Hoping to see Coles back and at his best. It's going to be an interesting year. I wonder who the shock inclusions and exclusions for the RWC will be?

I used to quite like this time of the year, excitement building a bit.

Not anymore.  Super rugby has become a bit meh really.  They need to do something to make it interesting again.

I'd like them to go back to round Robin. I think the NZ Derbies are grim to watch. So brutal, sometimes I feel almost like I am watch an MMA match. Once per round is plenty.

I'd like to see a Pacific Island team, but I honestly doubt that it would work for a litany of reasons. I don't think a team would perform any better than Japan.

I am not keen for them to drop the Sunwolves from the conferences, I think they have improved massively. It was always going to take 5 years for them to be a contender of any worth.

Surely any format change has to go back to RRs. Unfortunately I feel we're doing a lot of bending over backwards for South Africa, who are just going to leave anyway.

England Ireland was a really good game. England got up comprehensively at the end but it was in the balance going into the last 10. England were brilliant in defense and their kicking game gave Ireland problems.

Conor Murray had a horrible kicking day and Ireland were pretty bad in the air.

This is a very wide open world cup. It'll be a great finish to the year -  I couldn't really care less about super rugby but the international year will be amazing.
