Dingbatt: Just settling in to watch the Chiefs play the Crusaders in Christchurch. As a Chiefs supporter I would love a close game, but realistically I think the Crusaders will win and by a large margin. In other NZ derbies there is some doubt who will win, but not against the Crusaders despite them resting 3 extra ABs.

That turned out to be a pretty decent prediction. I had it as a close game but one the Crusaders weren't likely to lose.

I remain convinced that DM should be full back, and when Jack Debricinzi came on at 10, the Chiefs looked much better.

Some of the Crusaders tries were artwork and I am not sure is a team in the competition that could have stopped them tonight. I was frustrated to see us leak points at the end again, but at least we kept the bonus point.

Our new halfback Enari was the business! Also, Reece and Goodhue was massive. I thought that tackle that was looked at probably was pretty rough, I hope he doesn't meant to continue with that technique, could cost us a Yellow or worse under some circumstances.

All and all I feel pretty happy with how the Crusaders are tracking. Hoping the Chiefs can find some momentum at some stage, their defensive line looks broken like the bad old days. Colin Cooper is a good coach, I am not sure where it's going so wrong.

Trying to draw any conclusions about a chef's player is pretty impossible with their current setup. They are a rabble who is poorly led. On the short ball podcasts they have mentioned that Cooper isnt actually doing any coaching he's functioning as a manager. There's also the rumour in the herald that all is not well between the coaches.

If it's in the media it must be a total disaster as not much of the behind the scenes disfunction normally gets reported.

Not sure I'd agree. DM's issues at 10 have been present since they decided to try him at 10, and I supported the decision to try him there (I thought it worth a crack but my Gut said he needed the time and space of a 15 to make the most of him). He's not a natural 10 for my money, but could fill in at a pinch. In order for him to have a good game at 10, he would require a mighty pack to be going forward. I see the Chiefs have decided his brother should play at 10, which I think is a good decision.

What I can agree with, is that it may be hard to determine the effect of that if the rest of the Chiefs continue thier current play style if you could even call it that.

To be honest I am pretty glad for Rugby tonight. Something to focus on outside of the other horrible events.

The Chiefs whilst still error-prone showed considerable improvement. DM looked visibly more relaxed at fullback and it showed with one exception with some excellent goal kicking and line breaks. I still have concerns over his decision making and the temperament of Jordie Barrett for 2-3 things that happened (A grubber that was totally the wrong call, and for Jordie, more off the ball stuff and a kick into touch that shouldn't have even been attempted), esp near the end of the game. Better decisions could have had a win for either team.

Beaudens kicking was pinpoint, and that 58m kick by DM was a cracker. Really something. Iceman.

A draw was a fair conclusion to the game. The Chiefs probably saw it as a semi-win and the Canes as loss. The Canes were pretty fortunate not to have had 2 draws in two weeks.

So, I watched the match between the Rebels and Lions as a test of the Kayo Sports platform. I was impressed with what I saw. It's not as good as Sky for consistency of image, I had a couple of times where the image dropped to well below HD, despite having PLENTY of bandwith available.  As I am in Australia next week I plan on watching about 5 games on that platform.

The game itself was the very definition of a "game of two halves" with the Lions being appalling in the first half and the Rebels being perhaps the best I'd seen them, and the second half the Rebels being awful allowing the Lions to claw back all the points they lost. The big thing I noticed though, was the quality of the commentary. 3 South Africans who made ZERO attempt at balanced views. If you think our 3 are bad, you really want to watch this game to see how bad things could be.

I hear the Sunwolves are likely getting the chop and I feel pretty mixed. Of all the teams, they are the weakest, but in my view they have improved massively in the last 18 months and were handicapped at the start with the rush to get them ready. With proper coaching and decent players they have proven themselves worthy in my view and they did it in less time than the Jaguares. I also feel it's pretty unfortunate considering Japan is hosting the RWC in 6 months time.

On the flip side if SR doesn't return to round robin pretty much immediately, SR is in big trouble. It's not reasonable to play local derbies over and over we are pretty much killing each other.

My gut reaction is we'll see even more kicking. I think we'd see a lot more kicking from 12 and 13 particularly as you can potentially manipulate the winger to stay up then kick behind if you have a big open side.

Great. As if there aren't enough of the abominations that are rolling mauls already in a game. Now teams will play for a "50/22" and then use a rolling maul to score a try.

Yup, that wasn't the first thing that occurred to me, but yeah, that's a valid point.

It's a definite possibility but mauls are really only effective from inside the 10 metre area. There aren't many teams who drive outside that.

The deeper you try and kick the easier it is for the fullback to cut it off due to the time and angle.

I actually wonder if mauls are underused at the moment from non-goal line situations. It doesn't give super fast ball butt it does allow you to suck in a lot of forwards to create space.

I have seen a few this season from inside the 22! It's more common in the Northern Hemisphere, but yeah I wouldn't say common per se.

Mauls are a little bit of a lottery, in my view if your cleaners are effective, a pick and go can make good ground, but yes, admittedly, less space out wider.

It's good to see the Blues finally get a win over an NZ side. It was a pretty average game but I thought the forwards were very effective in the loose. They didn't have any problem getting over the gain line and Tuipolotus try was a result of real forward dominance.

I thought Ben Smith had some really nice spots as well.

It was good to see them win I agree. There were some great tries on both sides. Almost a shame the number 6's try was forward for the Blues.

Yip. He's a pretty hilarious interview as well. It was almost like early Christian Cullen (when he earned the beer bottle nickname).

Here is my most likely world cup squad.

I'm totally unconvinced by our midfield at the moment. We don't really have a physically dominant 12 or one who is a kick / pass / run threat. Crotty and Lienart Brown are both solid but not physically imposing. God only knows what Sonny Bill Williams do.

I'd really like to see Scott Barret get a few runs at 6 as that still concerns me, a lot. I don't know if Squire will make it with his injuries but I'm sure he'll get a good run at the rugby championship

I'd love to see us have another really good winger but I'm not sure that there is a multi skilled guy out there. I think Jordie Barret could be our player there if we want our best aerial team.
