networkn: Not sure I'd call it a dismantling (The first game was) but there was something wrong with the Crusaders last night, very wrong. It's rare to see them looking so lethargic and more concerning that Blackadder didn't seem that worried at half time. It just felt like they decided that they didn't care if they lost. I do get the impression that the team has either been told or believes that they have a MONSTER year in front of them and they aren't going to try too hard for fear of having nothing left for the World Cup.

I can't recall a time I've seen Andy Ellis kick out on the full, and last night I think he did it three times. Tom Taylor was one of the only players who seemed to WANT to go forward.

Re Yellow Card for Cane, it was 100% deserved. The Crusaders had just made a 50m break and had they of had fast ball had a very good chance of scoring (one of the very few all game). The halfback is not necessarily the #9, but any person who picks the ball off the ground at the bottom of a ruck or scrum, (nominated is the term).

Tameifuna continues to be the Chiefs biggest penalty magnet, I really dislike him and the way he plays, he was fairly lucky not to get a card himself for the penalties and cynical way he plays. I have grave concerns for the All Blacks if Rennie Coaches them, for the negative way he coaches his team to play.

The Crusaders made the Chiefs look better than they were to my thinking, though their defence reminds me of the Crusaders at the moment.

Seriously? You are the epitome of a one-eyed red and black fan.

One team last night was trying to use the ball at every opportunity and played some good rugby, and one team was trying to kick goals and looked devoid of attacking ideas right from the start. And for some reason you'd have grave concerns if the coach of the former team were to coach the AB's? Shouldn't you be admonishing the coach of the latter?

Upon a re-examination of my comments I can see you might have come to that conclusion, but if you look at my commentary in general I feel the way I do about the Chiefs when they play everyone else as well.

If you take a long look at all the comments I make across all Rugby you'll see that I generally disfavour the Chiefs for their negative tactics (They are the most penalised and yellow carded team in the competition.) and of course as a Crusaders fan will support Crusaders Rugby. However my comments should have probably been limited to the Crusaders poor performance.

Your comments re the coaches is silly. I clearly stated concerns about the Crusaders coach, and given my comments about the Chiefs, I wouldn't want the AB's to play that negative style of Rugby personally. Rennie has brought Mongrel to the Chiefs and some will applaud that, it certainly gets them some results, however as a Rugby fan I'd rather watch and support AB's current Rugby style than the Chiefs.

Yeah, fair enough, but I think your anti-Chiefs sentiment may be clouding your objectivity and judgement.

In terms of saying the Chiefs have negative tactics and are the most penalised and yellow carded team in the competition, what negative tactics are you talking about?

And FYI, going into the game on Friday both the Chiefs and Crusaders had bad disclipline records - conceeding an average of 12.4 and 12.3 penalties per game respectively, and having received 6 yellow cards each (http://www.sportal.co.nz/rugby/super-rugby/super-rugby-preview-crusaders-v-chiefs/mdq218dvt4hk1gk69gowlfa6v). So you're calling out one team you've decided you don't like but the team you support has almost exactly the same record.

Your previous comment re: Cruden vs Barrett goalkicking. We agree (I think) they are both a level down from DC in his prime (ignoring DC last week), but for 2015 BB is 65.9% and AC is 73.9%, see http://www.nzherald.co.nz/rugby/player.cfm?season=2015&competition=205&team=91&player=11061

I think if you start to see these things you build up a picture of perception vs reality hence my conclusion that your judgement may be clouded. I'm a Chiefs fan but also a Crusaders fan. We're all biased obviously but I think you may be more so than me in this matter ;)

He has failed to really impress this year and may be past his best-10-to-ever-have-played-the-game form e.g. vs the lions 10 years ago, but what you need to win a RWC final is generally not flare it is solid, mistake free football with good kicking and defense so you can apply pressure (especially given how referees these days don't usually penalise defensive teams who are offside unless one player is more offsite than the rest of his teammates and therefore sticks out).

The pecking order will be really interesting now with AC gone (poor bastard).

You'd think it will be DC, BB and Slade in the squad. On form you'd almost have to start with Slade, but given hes comitted to overseas I think right now they would/should go with DC to start and BB on the bench.

I think the difference between DC now and 10 years ago is that he is individually not really an attacking threat ball in hand as he has been in the past. But do we need that in our 10? When you have SBW or Nonu outside him then Savea and Ben Smith.. and maybe with some of the form Dagg has started to recapture (including playing at first receiver) they may see him preferred in the starting team with smith on the wing instead of fullback.

Point being I don't think we don't need an x-factor no. 10 in order to win the RWC.

We need a 10 who can

1 kick most penalties no matter where
2 kick tactically from no matter where
3 solid when being gang rushed and solid defending Jonah Lomus
4 keep up with Aaron Smith's run all day run everywhere
5 make the difference with a drop goal or two in the semi and the final

If you can't do 1-4 go home and watch telly

Its going to come down to the early All Black test matches.  They will play the side they think is going to do it as the dry run, and if there is no glaringly obvious problems, thats the starting lineup they will go with.

My money is on DC (starting), Barrett on bench.  I would have felt more sorry for Slade, but he will be well remunerated next year.

What a weekend of Rugby!

Lima Sopenga has to be in the frame for at least a fringe AB's training camp. How he played Friday night was probably one of the most impressive #10's performances of the last 18 months! The Sharks have been far from impressive, but the Highlanders attack was probably better than the Hurricanes!

More penalties and yellow cards for the Chiefs. Don't they ever get sick of playing with 14 men for 1/4 of the game? Surely they could come up with a game plan which doesn't involve guys sitting in the bin?

Hurricanes vs Crusaders, as a Crusaders fan it was very hard to watch such a poor defensive effort from a team who traditionally has been one if not the best team for defence in super rugby year after year. Both teams ran in 1 soft try each but boy there were some outstanding tries by the Hurricanes. I did feel it was VERY poorly reffed though, and trust me I'd feel the same way if the result had been reversed. I saw 2 clearly forward passes by the Hurricanes and two I felt were very marginal, the Hurricanes did get away with a few things but I guess that is the advantage of being the attacking team and all teams get it to some degree. I think the ref just couldn't keep up with the speed of the game. If we had a better night with the boot we would have been 1 point apart which would have been a pretty good result.

I think Dane Coles is going to cost us a game (AB's) at some point. He is too easily fired up and can't control himself. He got warned 3 times and one of those easily could have been a card.

Re. Canes crusaders,The scrums are an absolute lottery, this needs sorting out globally! I didn't see any forward passes that weren't called up. Remember forwards out of the hands, not literally forward

Maybe scrum penalties should be mostly downgraded except for the most serious offences? We've been trying top fix the scrum for decades

Yah it is a lottery I'd agree. But it's the same for both teams they get ruled by the same rules I suppose. There was one forward pass after a kick into the Canes 22 where the receiever passed to the kicker, forward by my reckoning and the crowd had a say too which was interesting.

Also Canes in front of the kicker after a restart was an issue multiple times too. We hosted a canes supporter over the weekend and even they though the reffing was average at best.

Totally agree the reffing was average, thats why he has been appointed an assistant referee at the WC (hallelujah).

I would have to see that specific pass.  There is a lot of misunderstanding around what constitutes forward from spectators.  They can only rule whether its forward or backwards out of the hands, once it has left the hands due to line speed the ball will almost always travel forward.

Half of the issue with scrums is teams not using it (the ball), if its available (the ball) they should have to play it.  A scrum is a mechanism for a semi-fair contest to win the ball, the idea of a scrum was never to push the opposing team 7m backwards, until they fall over and you are awarded a penalty.  I am also getting infuriated with the time these eat into games now, can be upwards of 20 minutes in an entire game!

Yup it should stop play. It really ate into the time the Crusaders had a man up. Also confusing to me is that some halfbacks put the ball straight in the middle others right under their players feet which I think differs from which side the ref is on! :)

It will be sad for me to see DC and RM play what is likely their last home game in Crusaders colours. I really hope they put on a virtuoso performance and really give the Reds a hiding.

Lots say RM is the greatest AB ever, and I would categorically agree, but I would actually say he would be the greatest player to take the field in Rugby. DC wouldn't sit far behind him and will likely never be beaten for the points he has scored.

It was a good night to be a Rugby, and a Crusaders fan. They left 3 tries on the field, but boy there was some classy play.

I am quite concerned what they have planned for #10 next year. To my knowledge they don't have a first or second choice, though they have a couple of possibilities.

Carter played really well tonight, but man Slade has to be form #10 this season surely.
