I had a pretty epic boys weekend (Steaks, Ribs, Paintball, Rugby, and lots of Borderlands played on big screens!), so I ended up watching the AB's and not much else, and Monday and Monday night spent a LOT of time watching the Rugby (Having seen all 48 matches of the past 2 cups will do the same this time too). I am still 3 matches behind and have the results unfortunately of 2 of them, however, I will still watch them. It's been fantastic so far.

Despite the reports of foul play in the AB's win, I was extremely happy that FINALLY the AB's are actually playing more disciplined Rugby. I have been harping here and elsewhere about it for around 3-4 years now, and other than the win, it was the most pleasing part of the win in my view.

Notable matches so far was the French vs Argentina. Wow, the French played magical beautiful Rugby for the first half and Argentines played fantastically in the second. I won't share the result (and I'd appreciate people doing the same during the discussions here), but I was on the edge of my seat.

Fiji vs Australia was amazing for 40 minutes. The Fijians are MONSTER humans, in terms of size and muscles etc. There were some MASSIVE hits in that game. I'd love to see Fiji make the quarters at least.

England v Tonga, Tonga played entirely better than they did against the AB's a few weeks ago. I do think England held their attack back quite a lot to focus on defense which was exceptional, and Eddie Jones did put forward what most consider to be his best team, but they seemed intent on putting themselves under artificial pressure. It showed best when they NEEDED to score and did so.

All in all it's been fantastic so far.

Also, I have been somewhat critical of the decision making of Captain Read in his leadership role, not taking a strong enough stance during games, or not doing enough to marshall the troops, but I was pretty impressed he managed to calm the AB's down after a frenzied and disorganised start seeing the team head back into it's structures. I am hoping to see a bit more of that type of calming influence or if required, getting stuck in to get the team focused if they end up under more pressure later in the tournament.

apparently world rugby board have decided the refs were too lenient.

i think there should be a new card - between yellow and red - where after 10 mins of bin time the player is not allowed to return to the field.

Samoa against Russia was a brutal affair, I could only watch half, but there were two direct contacts to the head for the same player about 3 minutes apart that saw 2 yellows, which in my opinion were red all night, even taking into account the mitigating factors that the player was falling. Not only did one of the tacklers get knocked out cold as a result of their own tackle, and it failed to result in an immediate disqualification of him taking the field again, but they didn't even do and HIA on the player tackled after either or both direct contact to the head. The referee said there wasn't much force, but that's utter BS.

Georgia vs Wales it was described as a hiding, but I don't think it was. The scoreline wasn't flattering to the Georgians (but could have been much worse) but in my opinion at scrum and breakdown, the Georgian players were absolutely dominant and impressive. If their backs were as good, I think they could potentially jump up a tier.

Agree. First yellow was well justified and player was ducking, but second... holly molly, Russian runner was doing sharp steps to the left and Samoan got flying into him with the shoulder charge - this is RED card any day of the day.

Pretty good game from russians, given they don't have much experience with the T1-2 teams. Second half just confirmed that they are not as quick to get up, cover empty spots and each time samoa players got an opportunity to run - they scored.

Moody's name somehow escaped a mention when Franks' disciplinary record was brought up. He's a yellow card waiting to happen in any game he's in.

I am inclined to agree, both those props have received savaging by me in the last 18 months for the horrible tackle technique they often use. They have got away a fair bit as well as been pinged a fair bit.

Steve Hansen isn't blind or stupid, so the fact it continues, means he either doesn't care about the occasional time he gets pinged for it, or has decided on the balance, he is better on field the way he is than off it.

I find it quite frustrating, but to be honest there are a fair number of grubs in the game at the moment including 3 players in the English side the worst of which is their esteemed 10 :)

Interesting that given Read's indiscretion, Moody repeatedly getting caught doing this sort of thing, Barrett earlier this year and Franks as well, it's worth asking whether the Crusaders have a problem.

I recall Auckland have some flat-out puzzling yellows issued against them and I can't recall the Crusaders ever being policed with that much zeal.

Well...sometimes perception and reality line up? Or stopped clocks, etc. Either way, having the captain lucky to escape a yellow is a pretty poor look for us.

As long as I've been a Crusaders and Rugby fan, I've been hearing the same thing. Having said that, there is plenty of evidence online which provides stats that show that the AB's don't get more cards than any other team in the top tier and if it is, it's usually by the smallest of margins. Similar with the Crusaders, though admittedly, last two seasons I haven't been impressed with discipline. I do think it's being worked on, but it's far from clear.

Do you really feel that the Blues get a worse run than anyone else? NZR has spent so much time and energy on them in recent years trying to turn them around, it defies belief that anyone could believe there is a conspiracy to have them fail. I have looked at a few of the yellows handed out for most teams this year and scratched my head, but I wouldn't want to be a referee for anything. From the comfort of my home, with a rewind function I still often miss many things that others notice, to do it on the field, where you can only see one angle as referees, in hundreds of collisions each game, it amazes me in some instances how many more things aren't missed. Lineout throws and forward passes were given a lot of latitude this season and seems to be continuing into the RWC.

I think we as spectators need to understand how nigh on impossible catching some of these incidents is.

No need to trust me, I'd trust Steve Hansen though, he has definitely earned that right :)

Oh man Fiji nearly brought it back from the end against Uruguay. Thats a bit of a shock upset to me. I expected the score between Fiji and Aus to be closer and now this 3 point loss. The now have to beat Wales and hope Wales beats Uruguay and pull back a lot of points, to make the top 3, or its Uruguay through and not Fiji. Uggggh,

How did Aus end up in a pool with almost no real opposition. Surely they thought these pools through. Scotland whilst looking ragged against Ireland should beat Japan imo to take 3rd spot in their pool.

I cant see anybody but NZ vs SA in the final at this stage. Despite SA loss to AB's they really were hot on Blitz defense fro 30 mins, any other side it will be more like 20 points than the mere 3 the AB's conceded during that match. AB's did look like they had no options for 20 mins with that brilliant defense pushing their phases backward, until our first 5 and co started chipping over this defense which was pushing the offside and sprinting through with no respect for a well placed chip and chase, which cracked them open twice and thats when SA Blitz D seemed to Back Off after that. Its a very smart AB's team, its a very mobile fast but still strong forward back and a dynamic bench with players who could easily start games. I am seldom confident in world cups, I wasnt the last 2 with Richie at the helm, geeze that one against France I felt he nearly gave them a sniff in the final. But I think this team is a lot smarter all over the park. Awesome loose forwards, hopefully Sam's head is ok, he looked to be given the ok to come on prowling the sideline but coaching did the right thing by letting the game go and he pulling him once it was looking unlikey he would be needed. Our loose forward trio is awesome.

Speaking of which, player of the game for me was Ardie Savea, hes just so dynamic, always at the ball in urgency, but plays like a back, runs like a back and steps like a back. Hes a beast.

Only 2 sides from each pool go through. Third place is eliminated.

I recall SANZAR openly apologising when Canterbury copped some rough penalties this year. In the one Blues game I went to, a Blues player who was challenging for the ball in the air bumped into an opposition player and was carded for 'dangerous play', despite challenging for the ball. But that was okay, apparently.

What I'm saying is that successful teams who don't have to play scrappy rugby probably concede less, but it doesn't mean they are committing fewer penalty offenses. The ball is always moving, it's not like English rugby where everything happens in close and around the ruck, so you're not always looking at it.
