I'd suggest at this point, assuming no major trip ups, that the final will be either AB's vs England, or AB's vs SA. I'd expect us to beat SA if we stay the right side of the penalty count and conditions allow us to play fast paced Rugby, England is going to be a bigger challenge in my mind.

Scotty Stevenson and Sean Maloney are the worst commentators presently at the RWC. They are both painful to listen to most of the time, with very few absolute gems to redeem things.

Maloney sounds like a boxing announcer most of the time. Even some of the Mitre 10 cup commentators (excluding the usual two) are better.

This clip has a good compilation of the differences between the cards, cards + citing, penalties and not a penalty examples from this World Cup. The huge glaring eyesore of a call is Piers Francis' hit - if he were an Islander he would have had a three week ban. He got nothing, not even after being cited.

This is why I'm so concerned about the ABs playing England. There is a clear intent on the part of officials to not penalise English players for this sort of thing. If we come up against them, I'd be bracing for the most one-sided penalty count in history.

I think you are seeing what you want to see. The Francis tackle made initial contact on the shoulder, which is exactly what the judiciary said. They also said it should have been a yellow card. That is exactly the same as Kieran Reads arm on Du Toit and Du Toits tackle on Savea.

Yellow cards aren't ground for citing (thank goodness) otherwise Laulala would be having a holiday.

The 'initial contact on the shoulder' provision hasn't been carried forward on the field. There's been cards since where that has been clearly the case but they were still given on the field.

Sure and there have been tackles totally missed on the field and by the TMO such as Reads and du Toit. I don't think there is any conspiracy here - if there was it'd be all over the media. The other home unions hate the English more than anyone.

The point is they are not taking into account mitigating factors when giving out cards on the field that sudden apply when you're in front of the citing commissioner.

I fail to see how Francis running bolt upright into a tackler is any better than a lock tackling a falling player and making contact with the head. In Francis' case, they found a million mitigating factors to decide a yellow was the correct call. If you're a Tier 2 team or someone playing England, mitigation doesn't come into it. It's too bad after the game when you've been down to 14 men for someone to say "Yea, that wasn't consistent, sorry". Your tournament is probably already over by that stage.

Wouldn't we play England in the Semis making a AB's vs England final impossible?

If ENG beat FRA, yes that's correct.

If ENG throw the game, they are second in their pool, so won't face AB's in the semis, assuming both get through the quarters.

Speculation ensues that England could lose deliberately to France in order to avoid us in the Semi's.

You'd never really know. France have been both amazing and terrible this WC, but I wouldn't write them off to make a final at this stage. They have shown some pretty slick stuff at some parts of this tournament, and I feel they are seriously holding back in some places.

Italy are going to struggle more than usual against the AB's I am guessing. They are down to third and fourth choice props now, and their forwards haven't exactly been on fire this season anyways.  You never know, but I would expect we will put out a reasonably full strength team with perhaps BB being rested and if that's the case, I expect we will pull away within 50 minutes.

I cant see Eddie even contemplating throwing the game against France.

I would have to disagree with you that France have been amazing and terrible this WC, they have been pretty rubbish, an good performance in the first half against Argentina, but that about it. Though France being France anything is possible and also England haven't been tested yet.

I agree with you about Italy, I reckon this is the worst Italian team for a long time, and that's saying a lot. I've got a feeling the ABs will field pretty much thier "A" team(whatever that looks like) as a hit out before the knockout stage.

I'd be inclined to drop BB to let him have a refresher. I wonder if Ioane is going to feature, it's probably his last chance to shine if he hasn't done enough already to be considered for the big games.

I thought Ioane was good in support last game.

@handle9 did you see something about a potential injury to Ioanes legs, or were you just surmising?

IMO If they are going to give him another game it would have to be against Italy. I cant see him getting a big game though, Reece and Bridge are both playing better than him and he wouldn't replace which every center they decide have for cover on the bench.

It's been pretty widely reported that he's had niggly calves that stop him building fitness. I'm just putting that with the other evidence.

It would be a big surprise if Barrett didn't play. If he doesn't play he's coming into a knockout game after 18 days off. In pretty sure they'll be trying to avoid that.
