I am just saying if they really thought he was the man to win the next world cup then he would have a 4 year contract, Rennie got one from the Australian Rugby board .

I think it's a very sensible approach to give him 2 years. I don't think that shows a lack of confidence in him. If he does well, he will take us to the RWC, and if not, they can pull the pin and let the next guy have a crack. I wouldn't worry too much about what ARU do, they aren't exactly known for their amazing handling of coaching decisions :)

I doubt Rennie would have taken less than 4 and he held all the power, since there wasn't exactly a dearth of people lined up to compete for his position.

I wonder if Robertson will possibly consider dropping the second year of his Crusaders contract to head overseas. I suspect that what was missing from his resume perhaps, along with perhaps a lesser experienced assistant package on offer.

hasnt Foster only had one head coaching job at the Chiefs and they were terrible, it wasn't untill Rennie took over that they became good

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Foster is a totally underwhelming choice. I hope he is the right guy but I have no confidence in him based on previous performance. Time will tell.

He's been in the AB's environment for 8 Years. 8 Years is a long time to learn from your mistakes and become better which is a mantra the whole environment operates under and he was a part of setting up. He's been very successful as an assistant coach, and if past performances were something to be worried about, Steve Hansen shouldn't have been considered because under his leadership a team held the dubitable record of the most consecutive losses.

The AB's attack (for which he was responsible) has been very strong under his direction, and he was instrumental in setting up ways to combat the rush defense.

Some of the stuff I am seeing is really surprising in the way people are condemning him before he has even coached his first hour in charge.

He may be successful, he may not. No one knows but he's been associated with some average results in big games over the last few years.

He's not exactly a compelling figure personally. It is hard to be excited by Ian Foster.

Classy response to what has an unbecoming response by the public.

I thought we had grown up a bit as nation, but doesn't seem like it.

Instead, I hope to be excited by what the All Blacks do on the field rather than expecting excitement from the coach.

But, comparing the coaches, it's still hard to be excited by Steve Hansen whose name I'm already having to dredge up from faded obscurity.

So I see Foster as starting well ahead of the initial tenure of the previous coach. I also appreciate that he's been far more affable and communicative than other All Black coaches I can remember, e.g. Mitchell was like a sinkhole or the proverbial slough; even Laurie Mains had his bad days.

It's 2019. If Mitchell or Laurie Mains is the bar it is pretty low - player revolts are the result of their last head coaching efforts. Mitchell also shows the qualifications for a head coach are very different from being an assistant. He's a brilliant specialist and a nightmare head coach.

Hansen had been very successful domestically and had significant international experience as well as being assistant coach. Foster has only one of those three qualifications. Henry had exactly the same resume and had been successful twice with the Blues.

Foster has also been associated with a team that drew a lions series, lost the number 1 ranking and lost the world cup.

How much is on him? I don't know but when you combine that with the awful prices the NZRU ran then how can anyone expect unqualified support for him?

I hope he's successful but I am not convinced by him.

This is quite a good read

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/118199220/the-reinvention-of-ian-foster-how-the-new-all-blacks-coach-secured-his-dream-job

While I was luke warm, like most, he said something soon after his appointment. He wants change, innovation, etc. I have ideas, etc. It sounded more like someone who has more to offer than the boring, quiet succession plan. To me, it seems he can be independent, than just the follower with a new job.

Question. Why would Robertson not be in line for the assistant role? Given that he was one of two contenders, he must be qualified. Plus, that fits in with the succession plan, and if Foster doesn't win everything in two years, Robertson the assistant would be well placed and with two years AB experience.

Just when it didn't appear that the process for the All Black coaches couldn't be any more of a circus the Brad Mooar contractual situation comes forward. Understandably Scarlets want significant compensation for releasing him from.his contract early.

If NZR have to pay 400k to get him released, or even half of that, it's yet another massive black mark on the process. That is a lot of goal post pads and rippa sets that could have been bought if NZR had their act together.
