I think it is "drawing a long bow" to call this an "attitude problem".

If Farrell were the only player attempting such 'massive' tackles then I could single him out as care less, insult his intelligence, and berate him for bad technique. But he's not. If he'd been successful then it would probably ranked in a best-of list of 'massive' tackles for the season.

His record might be relevant but his bad tackles that I can remember had no real chance of success because they were already illegal at the point he committed to them e.g. no arms.

Farrell probably failed here because he was too successful at blindsiding Atkinson. I don't think that Atkinson would have tried to step left if he saw Farrell coming - Farrell was too lateral to be in Atkinson's line of focus. So if Atkinson hadn't stepped left towards Farrell and dropped his shoulder then there would have been a spectacular hard tackle like hundreds of others I've seen. It would probably have whipped Atkinson's head to the side which could still have hurt him but it would have been entirely legal.

But what happened was that Farrell was already committed with no chance to bail on his tackle even if he had time to make that decision.

I would like to see less of these failed tackles because they could eventually, at the professional level, kill someone. But they're not going to stop unless tackles have to be below the shoulder/armpit.

No one insulted his intelligence. His record is relevant. When someone is a repeat offender at something that shouldn't be happening, in my mind it's an attitude/mindset issue which ties in with a willingness to do something about it.

As long as fans/players continue to make excuses for it, it will continue.

I do *not* have an issue with big tackles. His tackle failed because it was too high.

Unfortunate for Braydon Ennor sidelined for 9 months. I really feel for those guys with serious injuries! I have huge respect for anyone who can have an severe injury, surgery and undertake enough rehab to still compete at the top level.

LOL halving his sentence for "good behaviour", whilst acknowledging his prior bad behaviour.

Judiciaries in general, I'd say. Plenty of inconsistency and unwarranted leniency in the Southern Hemisphere too.

Sonny Bill Williams got 4 weeks for his shoulder charge on Anthony Watson. Scott Barrett got 3 weeks for a shoulder charge to the head of Michael Hooper. The tackle was harder but not a shoulder charge.

The judiciary can only take into account behaviour he's convicted of. This seems correct in context

This is quite an interesting twitter thread to explain how the judiciary comes to it's conclusions. They were suggesting a mid-range offence rather than a high-range offence. Their web page is interesting as well. It's northern hemisphere focussed but if you are interested in how judiciaries and some of the legal topics work in rugby it's worth a read.

This was an interesting article from Scottie Stevenson

https://thespinoff.co.nz/society/09-09-2020/give-it-up-nz-rugby-the-2020-bledisloe-cup-tests-need-to-be-in-brisbane/

If there are no crowds I don't think there would be a reason to play Bledisloe tests in NZ.

Personally I don't think that rugby players should take precedence over others in getting access to flights to NZ or managed isolation so find the reasoning over test matches morally dubious anyway.

The good the bad and the rugby was good this week. They talked about the Farrell tackle and his tackle technique. They then had Ma'a Nonu on for 45 minutes or so. He seems very at peace with his life and career.

It's worth watching.

I agree about playing in Australia. More so if they can get a good crowd. A good trans-Tasman event will be really enjoyable.

It will be no hardship for me if the tests don't happen but I largely disagree about priorities for flights. I'd prefer to see more clarity from the government around allocating the scarce resource of airline passenger seats. We'd be better off without the current "lottery" for airline seats. While I see sport as a non-essential activity, there is ample evidence that international rugby tests have a positive impact on some of our measurable economic and social indicators. I'd say that this is likely to be worth the price of reserving, say, 50 airline seats.

What did they say? A short summary of each would be interesting.

I am extremely disappointed Australia got these tests. From a strictly NZ viewpoint, I feel it would have been excellent and if we had got to l1 by that time, we would have had full stadiums every test. I would have encouraged the sharing of ticket profits with the away teams in some manner as well. I feel it quite unlikely they will fill stadiums in Australia. I find Stevenson about as tolerable to read as to listen to commentate, and tire of his "if you don't agree with me, you aren't a real fan" nonsense. He does make some good points in his article, I can see the benefit overall especially if Australia arrived here undercooked.

What you said above is also exactly what I think about Justin Marshall's work.

Better writing than commentating because I can totally avoid their articles but it is much harder to avoid their match commentaries.

I think JM is one of the few commentators who will make an effort to explain a play or a referee decision in a way people can understand. He used to have a column where he explained various attacking or defending methods. I couldn't always follow it, but there was some value to it I think. He can be irritating too and he makes mistakes. I am glad he isn't the "main" guy, but overall he doesn't bother me too much. I don't like his overarching attitude of excusing thuggery/dangerous/careless plays. He also notices things I like, like Carters final test kick off his right foot, that I didn't really notice till he said it, there are a few things each week.

I don't see JM ever proclaiming his viewpoint should trump all others, do you have examples (I am willing to be mistaken)?
