Handle9: The good the bad and the rugby was good this week. They talked about the Farrell tackle and his tackle technique. They then had Ma'a Nonu on for 45 minutes or so. He seems very at peace with his life and career.

It's worth watching.

What did they say? A short summary of each would be interesting.

Essentially that Farrell uses a rugby league style technique (which is totally unsurprising given his background). You stay high until you get very close and then drop down very late. Basically it lets you get your feet much closer to the ball carrier and make a better tackle. It's a technique that is effective but is borderline at times. He got it technically very wrong as Atkinson could only step one way so there was no need to be that high.

It was reckless and he got it badly wrong.

They made the point that tackle technique is challenging to get right consistently.

They were also fairly outspoken about the nonsense being talked about Owen Farrell personally. They made the point that it's crap being talked by people who personally have no clue about Farrell.

If you're interested in the Nonu stuff watch it.

I am extremely disappointed Australia got these tests. From a strictly NZ viewpoint, I feel it would have been excellent and if we had got to l1 by that time, we would have had full stadiums every test. I would have encouraged the sharing of ticket profits with the away teams in some manner as well. I feel it quite unlikely they will fill stadiums in Australia. I find Stevenson about as tolerable to read as to listen to commentate, and tire of his "if you don't agree with me, you aren't a real fan" nonsense. He does make some good points in his article, I can see the benefit overall especially if Australia arrived here undercooked.

Australia seems a much more logical place to hold the rugby championship. Aside from the quarantine aspects the timezones for broadcasters are much better. If they are trying to maximize the revenue being able to get the games sold into Europe is important.

Stevenson writes opinion pieces. They're meant to be more controversial than the normal regurgitated NZR press releases we get disguised as journalism.

Speaking of media it's quite amazing how NZR isn't blaming the government but all the details are in the media. Someone more cynical than myself would suggest that they are NZR mouth pieces parroting the partyline.

I don't see JM ever proclaiming his viewpoint should trump all others, do you have examples (I am willing to be mistaken)?

One example is that in almost every game he commentates, he will present his view on why the referees got it wrong and will usually accompany that with some statement like, from memory, "I don't care what anyone else thinks ..." or "They can say what they like ...". I don't want to hear complaints about the refereeing although there can be a perverse joy in listening to him whine about the Crusaders being hard done by.

I just don't want to hear the same point of view repeated again and again - didn't we have a section in this topic that mentioned his whining. I'd rather hear good technical analysis of the game. Sometimes he does this and he does notice some aspects of play that I didn't notice myself. So I'm not signing any petition to get rid of him.

Actually, I've realised that I can't mind his commentary that much because I would really enjoy having him and Gregan commentating together - for either of the NZ and OZ teams.

Marshall can be pretty annoying about refereeing but he's ok. Certainly no worse than the likes of Mexted or Kearns.

It's not an easy gig to do well.

Was a very high calibre of Rugby at M10 level over the weekend, despite some of the blown out scores. Nice to see some AB's turning out for their provincial sides. It seems similar to Super Rugby, this week at least. North Harbour gave Canterbury a bit of a scare. Held on for 70 minutes give or take.

I'll be interested to see if Tasman can back up last years performances, but on early indications, looks promising.

Sio Tompkinson should be spending a good long time considering his tackle technique over the next 8 weeks hopefully.

Anyone else taken a look at www.thexv.rugby yet? It looks to be based on The Athletic model but it's a Rugbypass (sky tv NZ) product. I've signed up for the month free to take a look. it's only US$25 for a year so pretty low risk.

Use jonesxv as the signup code for $5 off for the year.

The site is pretty sh!te technically. It only seems to work reliably on chrome desktop.

I've pinged them on twitter, anyone else having problems should do the same so it gets fixed.

Interesting comments from Mehrtens on stuff today.

If what he says is true it seems sadly predictable that NZR once again failed to play nicely with others. They keep screwing up the same way over and over again. They also seem to have conveniently forgotten about that when feeding their tame press proxies.

Yeah the boys!

The shield coming home to it's rightful home, and who cares if it's only for a week as I love taking it off those southerners!!

I thought a couple of terrible late decisions, in particular the shoulder charge off the ball after the whistle which should have been a penalty and yellow card, might have ended up costing us, so good that it didn't.

Canterbury are the Auckland of the 80s - Everyone loves to beat them.

Yeah the boys!!

He was unlucky to miss out initially but he most be in the extras they take. He's been consistent all year.

It's ten more players, right?

So, for sure they'll take specialists: a loosehead prop, a tighthead prop and a hooker (coach has already mentioned them); two loose forwards; and a halfback.
That's six. Who/where would be the other four?
