Hammerer:Handle9: The good the bad and the rugby was good this week. They talked about the Farrell tackle and his tackle technique. They then had Ma'a Nonu on for 45 minutes or so. He seems very at peace with his life and career.
It's worth watching. What did they say? A short summary of each would be interesting.
Essentially that Farrell uses a rugby league style technique (which is totally unsurprising given his background). You stay high until you get very close and then drop down very late. Basically it lets you get your feet much closer to the ball carrier and make a better tackle. It's a technique that is effective but is borderline at times. He got it technically very wrong as Atkinson could only step one way so there was no need to be that high.
It was reckless and he got it badly wrong.
They made the point that tackle technique is challenging to get right consistently.
They were also fairly outspoken about the nonsense being talked about Owen Farrell personally. They made the point that it's crap being talked by people who personally have no clue about Farrell.
If you're interested in the Nonu stuff watch it.
