I didn’t get to see the match live due work commitments, but watched it this morning. Was able to enjoy it already knowing the score.

Reiko Ioane has been show-boating like that when scoring tries for a long time. This time he was caught out. I won’t be surprised if he is dropped for the next game.

Jordy Barrett is a Fullback, not a Winger. Can’t quite understand why he was the kicker instead of Mo’unga or McKenzie (except at longer range). Unless, of course, that the Cake Tin is his home ground. He is a worthy addition to the team, but suffers when the AB’s strategy is to have two pivots, Mo’unga/Barrett, or as per yesterday Mo’unga/McKenzie. He may have a greater impact off the bench.

I hope Caleb Clarke gets a start next week and not at the expense of Bridge, who had a solid game with things not flowing his way.

I bet Mo’unga is feeling it today. He was the target of some massive hits, some of which were quite ‘late’.

It was an entertaining game and certainly one where millimetres mattered. Whether it was the McKenzie strip that led to the Wallaby’s try, the foot in touch that was missed, the gap between Ioane’s finger and the ball over the try line, or the game winning penalty hitting the post it was all about those tiny moments.

In the end Wellington’s weather was the winner on the day.....

Well to be fair, at the world cup only 1 team beat them. I am not saying there aren't issues, but they are hardly being beaten game after game (which if their style of Rugby was easy to combat as claimed, would be the case). I believe had we of beaten England, we would have beaten South Africa in the final. I may be wrong about that. England came to the RWC with 1 thing and 1 thing only in mind. No doubt they comphrehensively beat us and deserved the win, but if we played 5 times, how many times do you really think they would have beaten us? Having said that, the big scorelines that the AB's put on other teams in years gone by is less apparent now.

I was hoping for less of "more of the same" but we are in game one of the international season, in wet weather, so I am not sure how much to read into that. Australia played out of their skins, we had a very average night at the office. Both teams will improve, but my gut says we will improve more than they will and next week will have a bigger gap in favour to the AB's. I just don't think Scott Robertson, as highly as I do think of him, is the magic solution that some people think he is.

I don't think they will drop him entirely, perhaps to the bench. They will not want to dent his confidence by completly dropping him, though in my opinion ALB at 12 and Goodhue at 13 is how I'd run it.

Mo'unga was targeted and I felt the forwards didn't afford him the protection they should of, probably as a result of not getting the go forwards. I expect some pretty harsh words to be said and for next week our forwards to be much more physical and confrontational. There were probably 2 of the late tackles on Mo'unga that warrated a penalty. They are valueable lessons for him to learn. I think the Dual Pivot role works best with an established combination, which RM and DM certainly aren't.

I am not as confident that Clarke should start. He's a promising talent for sure.

I think the calls that Foster is under pressure and that Rennie is the saviour of the Wallabies are silly. One game, the first of the season, after a disrupted season at lower levels, is not an indication at all of where either team is at. The Wallabies performed admirably, but I feel the AB's were very passive and rusty, and I suspect 2-3 games from now would be a better guage. It wouldn't surprise me to see the AB's have a decent game next week and have a decent gap in the scoreline. I also see pundits dumping the prior bad performances soley at the feet of Chieka, which I also consider silly.

@handle9 I am also glad to see some comraderie between the two teams, though, it is rare for teams not to share a beer afterward, even with administrations bickering at each other. I am glad to see the AB's making suitable acknowledgement of Hooper, who I think has been the best and hardest working Wallabie for quite a few years.

Foster is under pressure because he wasn't a consensus appointment and the All Blacks didn't win. If they aren't successful this week it will build. All Black coaches get massive amounts of pressure. It's part of the the job.

It's been rare for the All Blacks and Australians to share a drink for a while. Cheikas paranoia and Hansen being a bit of a dick towards him didn't help. With those two gone and two men coaching who have less rampant egos helps a lot.

Just happened to be staying in the same hotel as the ABs over the weekend (had booked months ago before the game was scheduled). At breakfast on Monday morning, Rieko was sitting a couple of tables away from us. I was tempted to enquire whether he needed more butter for his fingers.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

That no-try of Ioane's has been given a thousand times over in previous matches. There was no clear loss of control and certainly not enough to overturn an on-field decision of 'try' from the ref. I feel a bit sorry for him.

Compare and contrast with the Australian try which came from a clear lost-foward at a ruck, which the refs didn't even send upstairs. Ironically, if the broadcaster had shown a replay of the try and not a phase of play from several phases ago, it would have been on the big screen for the referee to see before the kick was taken.

I like to have a rant about refs more often than any sane individual, but I honestly feel the whole TMO thing was a bit poor but probably a by-product of the lack of rugby recently. It just didn't really work that well for whatever reason, and it usually does.

It certainly looked to me that his finger-tip lost contact with the ball.

Same. Put it this way, would you have been happy for Australia to have been awarded the same try?

If the try with the lost forward had actually been reviewed and still given... probably not. But it wasn't 😅

It's not often Mark Reason and I see eye to eye, but I agree with almost every word written in this article.

Handle9 alluded to us not fronting physically as we used to do prior to us going to the RWC last year, and his predictions were correct, at least in the Semi against England.  I felt we didn't win the collisons and we didn't make the gain line as willingly as we have done in the past. If we want our pivots to shine we need to give them just a little more time and space to work.

I will add however, that one thing I was pretty impressed with, is how much faster we are getting up off the ground and re-forming in defense. Even in the last few minutes, we were quicker than we had been.

That was a better read than I expected. Thanks.

I must be out of my depth because I can't imagine what Foster is trying to do with some of his selections for various positions. But I can see what I don't like in the game and Reason listed almost every complaint I had while watching the game.

The controversial selections aren't the problem - the problem is, and has been, the forward pack. Particularly the front five. The northern hemisphere has gone past us in the power of their forwards and now coaches like Erasmus and Rennie are bringing that back to South Africa and Australia.

It's one of the reasons I thought we should have gone for a different coach. Foster has no northern hemisphere experience and it shows. He's only existed in the bubble that is New Zealand rugby. We are very good but there is a lot we can learn from other countries.

Looks like George Bridge is out for the season with a pectoral injury. It's really unfortunate for him.

Scotty Stevenson reporting that in exchange for moving the last All Blacks - Wallabies test Australia got back a guarantee of cross over Super Rugby fixtures for next years. I hope it's correct.
