There is no one more offensive than a horrible Cantabrian, especially towards Aucklanders.

It's a lot better since the earthquake but it can still be very nasty.

Isn't that over rated? Im a Cantabrian, yes we laugh when a minor shake spills the latte or they get a snowflake on Queen St. its not serious, surely anyone can see that

its banter pure and simple.

It's really not. There is a very nasty edge from some Cantabrians.

I dont live there anymore, so I will take your word on that. But at least from my end, and friends/aquaintances its just banter. Its the same with sport and AUS. Arch rivalry, banter, but when the push comes to the shove, we go there for the fires they go here for the EQ or whatever else happens. Friendly but sharp rivalry if you will. Nothing wrong with that. IMO.

I am super disappointed at the two losses, but I'm way more frustrated with the poor discipline (and yes, that's everywhere across the park). Coles slap of Matera was a disgrace, it really upset him (he made a comment about respect because he was playing for his country and it really made him super determined the whole rest of the game). Frizzel as well. I understand it's seen by some as gamesmanship, and trying to rattle your opponent, but it entirely backfired. Even if it hadn't, it's just stupid. If you need that to win, I'd rather lose.

Coles didn't slap Matera and Matera didn't make the comment about Coles.

Having lived in both places for a long time each, I'd say the comments and nastiness is about on par. Some of the things I've heard people say about each other based on region makes me feel ill.

As you say, the EQ's made a massive difference. For the first time ever, I felt we were all Kiwi's. It's starting to seep back a little and I find that really disappointing.

He did and he did, although the latter is possible as it wasn't recorded I don't think. You didn't see the slap?

I saw the slap. It was on Bruni.

Materas comment was about Frizzel. People remember what they want to remember not what happened.

Ok, my mistake, different players were involved, but that doesn't really change anything. Slapping players? Really!?

There was a lot of niggle from both sides. Frizzell got a shove in the face which is what he reacted to. Argentina were smarter about it.

I can't say the other way but I've never been abused by people I don't really know like the way I have been in Christchurch. It's even worse if the Blues have lost and the Crusaders have won.

I cope with it fairly easily (it helps being tall and quite happy to be sarcastic) but it's quite pathetic.

I've heard from Australians about it happening to them in Auckland though. Really unpleasant stuff.

My comment around it 'not being allowed to happen' was based on two things:

1) Tasman going into a game a couple of weeks ago with a massive +/- points differential with Canterbury and coming up with a donut. Really stretched the boundaries of plausibility.

2) The frustrating game on Sunday where the Auckland side was penalised into the ground (usually with good reason) but the final Canterbury penalty shot taking 24 seconds longer than legally allowed to be kicked in the last three minutes of the game. The rules are very clear on this. Even the commentators (who weren't having the best of games as far as objectivity goes) remarked on how long it was taking. It should have been a penalty for time-wasting on the Canterbury side of halfway - at that point the game was still very winnable (hell, Auckland might have kicked that themselves).

As an Aucklander, you get used to these interesting little quirks (watching Waikato games with Glen Jackson refereeing has probably taken a decade off my life) but it doesn't make them any less frustrating to see one side almost always get out of jail at the death (compounded by watching your own team usually find a way to bottle it).

This is a real bug bear of mine - everyone is taking their time but this one was particularly bad. I felt like he was going to take until the hooter. He should have been pinged but they need to crack down on it across the board.

The rule is the 60 seconds starts from when the team indicates they are having a shot. If they don't do that within 60 seconds it's a scrum to the other side. It's not a penalty offence.

Interestingly if a player makes a mark on the ground after being awarded a penalty that means a penalty shot must be taken. This doesn't get enforced either. You regularly see a player walk up, grab the ball, make a mark in the ground, take two steps back then run about 5 metres past the mark to kick to touch. They should be forced to have a shot at goal once they make the mark in the ground if refs were enforcing the laws.
