Handle9: Is it really that much of a surprise? It was pretty clearly signalled they would play around with the teams over these 3 games. They've done it a bit more than might have been expected for the first game but Tonga are pretty weak.

Not that much of a surprise, but to bring guys from bolter to starting a match isn't very common. Usually, they introduce new guys off the bench.

As you say, Tonga aren't the strongest team and some experimentation is good, though if it's a scrappy affair, there will be cries about the coaches ad infinitum :(

The team had a pretty average year so there'll be pressure on the coaches. That's how it goes when you appoint unconvincing coaches through a crappy process.

Based on the Tongan team if the All Blacks can start fast then they should win by a 100.

If a slow start then win by 70 to 80.

This could be as boring to watch as the shield game last night.

It's ridiculous for anyone reasonable to judge any team or any coach off the back of a 2020 performance. It's also stupid for the average fan to expect that not only should we wildly innovate so we can be and stay number 1 in the world, but in the process of doing that, we can't take a step backwards, lose any matches, and must win by a margin of 30 points every week with perfect performances by every player. Honestly, NZ fans make me cringe sometimes. We need to grow up a lot.

Caleb Clarke only makes the travelling reserves for the Olympics. I am not surprised after seeing him play, he was OK at best in the matches I saw, somewhat off his blockbusting 15's best. I don't think he adjusted to the format as quickly as he might have liked, and with less experience... But with the high attrition rates in 7's he could potentially still get some reasonable game time. I do hope he can make a decent contribution.

I find Ian Foster easier to watch being interviewed than Steve Hansen. He is a bit more effusive and open, and a little more upbeat. Steve Hansen could deliver a zinger and was good for a laugh from time to time. I'd like to see him succeed and prove the nay-sayers wrong if I am honest.

I like to see the AB's score lots of tries, but this feels very onsided. I think the commentary that we won't learn anything about this match, or the next two, are probably mostly true, but not learning anything and not getting anything out of them, is two different things.

Three things I'd like to see:

1) Discipline - Something the AB's have been very poor at in recent times.

2) Intensity in the collision. On attack and Defense.

3) Accuracy. Particularly in defense, but execution of passes, presenting of the ball for the first receiver and in clean outs.

Because it's entirely reasonable to give the benefit of the doubt, that one was caused by the other.

For the record, I am not saying the performances weren't pretty poor at times, just that I wouldn't read too much into it.

If it's the same problems that have been there since 2017 then criticism is entirely warranted. The whole pitch of this coaching team was continuity.

It's not like Foster was a compelling candidate in the first place. He hasn't yet shown a reason to be given the benefit of the doubt.

The refeerring decision in the MAB game regarding the head contact was the best refereeing I have seen this year regarding head contact. It wasn't anything other than a total accidental set of circumstances and was treated as such. Fantastic.

The New Zealand interpretation of the high tackle framework is a bit farcical. Ash Dixon clearly committed a red card offense in the super rugby final. Any northern hemisphere or South African referee would have given that a red card.

Lol. It doesn't matter. There was contact with the head. The framework applies and there is no discretion in its application.
