Our game plan is extremely simplistic and hasn't evolved. Most of it relies on the players making a half break or offload which isn't sustainable against good defences.

Basically we haven't evolved from introducing pods and other teams have, they are better coached and better prepared than the All Blacks. The game has evolved since 2016 and we have not.

I always look at kickoffs as one of the key indicators of how well coached a team is. If that is organised then there's a good chance the rest of the game plan will be as well. Our kickoffs are not that effective anymore. I think a great indicator of that was late in the French game Jordie Barrett was sent after the kickoff, which is a good move. He's really effective on kickoffs. The problem was there was no coverage at full back. A well coached side knows who should be there and they are moving as soon as the ball was kicked off. We were scrambling. It's par for the course for the last 5 years against well organised strong sides.

One thing I am wondering is, was this years focus about getting through a big season and introducing a lot of new players or extending young players experience, and seeing who copes under pressure and less about evolving the game plan, or do you think the coaches just don't know how to evolve any more? Foster and Mcleod are from the old coaching team, but Plumtree, Moar, and Feeks are new to the AB's and surely, they would have some new ideas, even if Foster was resistant. I do wonder if the reason we haven't 'done' much is because adding that to everything else would have just made the situation worse? I am kind of hoping that, and that next year we should see more structure and some new attack ideas. I see a lot of people writing us off already for the RWC 2023 which seems a bit crazy given how much can change in a week or two let alone a year or two.. My feeling is that there is a plan, I am just not sure what it is, or how innovative or not it will be. France and Ireland look good right now, the question is, can they sustain that through the the RWC?

It's been 17 years of the same ideas. It's probably time for a new start.

Rassie Erasmus needs to shut up and go away. What a dickhead.

I agree, for years our game has become stagnant and predictable. The opposition knows what we do and are getting better at countering it. If we do not change more and more teams will get on top of us and we will slowly slip down rankings. The decline started under the Hansen leadership team and it has continued under the Foster team which should be no surprise to anyone and it has continues the same old and was predictable when Foster got the job. The change has to happen not only with the ABs coaching team but at Rugby NZ. The decision by Rugby NZ to nominate Foster as coach of the year shows the lack of foresight and understanding by Rugby NZ.

This is a misconception. This is an automatic nomination. There was a discussion on radio NZ about this very thing and how THAT needs to change.

Unfortunately, behind a paywall, but this was somewhat reassuring:

It feels they know where things are going wrong. The question is, do they have the personnel (players or coaches) to fix it?

I like the fact they are at least honest with themselves about their faults.

I did not know that. It makes  difference. Thanks for that.

This appears to be awful and, according to some social media posts I’ve seen, not an isolated case.

I see Joe Schmidt will likely be announced as Grant Fox's replacement as a selector with a strategic analysis role added.  I am not certain how I feel about that, however additional experience, especially international, and perhaps a fresh set of eyes probably can't make things much worse unless having two head coaches working together doesn't work well. Apparently, Foster had tried to recruit him a couple of times earlier but timing didn't work for Schmidt.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/super-rugby/300498873/super-rugby-new-zealand-rugby-assigns-referees-to-franchises

I think, given the abysmal level of refereeing last year in NZ, that this is probably a good thing for both teams and referees, though I can't say I envy the Crusaders having Paul Williams in their camp.

Glad to see at least, that he won't referee them during the season.

I am undecided on the Silverlake deal with NZR, but feel a lot more comfortable with the proposed 5-7.5% share they will likely take. Like anything, the devil is in the details and execution, so this could end up being something good, or bad, though at <10% the potential impact they have on the brand is likely to be fairly minimal.

The governance review and likely restructure is of more long term significance.

NZR needs a clean out. At least Impey, Hansen and Tew have gone. They were yesterdays men and stayed too long.

Very sad news today the Va’aiga Tuigamala has died. It hasn’t been reported what happened but it’s tragic for his family, especially a few weeks after the passing of his sister.

What a match between the Blues and Hurricanes!

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck had a far stronger first outing than I would have expected. If he can keep that up, he's going to be a valuable midfielder for the Blues. There could be something special upcoming if they can get him and Reiko combining well.

The Blues looked absolutely exceptional and pretty consistent throughout the match particularly the first 30 minutes, with strong handling, great quality passes, and mostly pretty good decision making. Ioane *really* needs to focus on his passing and decision making, it's been a problem for quite a while, and with some improvement over the past couple of years, but as a more senior player, this shouldn't be an issue by now. It wasn't of huge consequence this time as the Blues scored, but it could have been more costly.

Unbelievable come back by the Hurricanes.

If tonight was an indication of the Blues season, I think they look like genuine contenders. As the first match, there wasn't much sign of rust that most teams displayed round one. Hurricanes showed they have some real mettle, something probably missing in their last 2 seasons.

Very entertaining.

I dont follow national rugby, but watched it as RTS was in it. It was very entertaining. Both sides looked great with the ball, so possession was a key. Roger looked good but he didnt get the ball or action very much, maybe I'm used to the NRL game style where he would get the ball early in each set, and at times later in the set as well. I may follow this season, not because of RTS but the overall skill level seems excellent. Ill follow the Blues as I was raised there, and I guess Crusaders as I live here. Or maybe not!
