JPNZ:

1. I didn't mention Robertson, I think there are a number of people who could do a better job.

2. My dislike stems from his constant changing of players and positions (we are never going to improve without a settled side, building connections etc)

3. As with most teams named he hasn't gone off form as such and picked a player who isin't even staying in NZ and some that are not AB material IMO

4. He still looks to have no actual plan regarding rush defense or how to win when our forwards are being bossed

Very good points mate.

For me Foster doesn't have much insight at all, the bloke hasn't got a clue how to counter the rushing defence, especially when our forwards are going backwards, that's when we should be kicking behind them into space, pointless just smashing into a brick wall, giving them every chance of turning our ball over.

Part of the reason for us losing to France & Ireland was playing them at the end of a long year, but don't see that as much of an excuse, every team has to go through that type of situation... ABs were awful in the forwards against them, particularly at the breakdown where we didn't get enough numbers to our ball carriers to clean them out aggressively, so we could give our backs quick recycled ball.

Foster, Plumtree, Goodhue, and Havilli test positive for Covid. That's very unfortunate. Esp without any warm-up games. Ireland have the MAB mid-week to at least get them started.

I was reading a bit over the weekend, with some pundits saying if we lose this series to Ireland the coaching staff of the AB's could be sacked. I'd imagine that would be fairly unlikely, surely? A change of coach at this point would be incredibly disruptive?

Ireland's defence has been pretty staunch recently as well. 6 tries in defence and 24 on offence. That's decent considering one of those conceded tries was an intercept.

What are the eligibility requirements for the MAB this year? Do you still require Maori ancestry?

I see they have appointed two half-backs as co-captains for their test on Wednesday. I imagine the referee will be super happy they won't be on the field together. 10 debutants in the 23, which is a fair number!

Anyone selected for the NZ Maori's team needs to be able to have their whakapapa confirmed before they are eligible to play. This is noted on the AB's web page

"Originally team selected was ‘loosely’ governed in terms of heritage, but now all players must have Māori whakapapa or genealogy confirmed in order to represent the side".

Excuse my (genuine) ignorance, but what does that actually mean? It is done by percentage (1/8th etc) or some other criteria?

Defense Coach Scott McLeod also down with Covid. Schmidt called in to assist.

This is going to be a hell of a challenging first game.

One of the articles I read over the weekend, can't find it to post, was criticising the AB's from last year relying on the forwards too much, but I found that quite strange as the times we looked compelling were the times where we did periods of pick and go, and built fast recycled ball but kept the ball in tight. I felt we were going wide far too often and far too quickly. There was a period I think around the 60-minute mark against the French where I thought we were going to turn the result around, because we started going super direct and hard with our forwards and didn't just fling the ball to our wingers and hoped for a miracle.

I'd really like to see Foster show he can identify, present and have the AB's execute a gameplan that exposes a teams weaknesses specifically, ala Scott Robertson against the Blues in the SR Final. I can't recall a more visceral demonstration of that in recent times. Obviously, it's not good enough to just have a plan, but you need the players to execute it, whilst putting the opposition under enough pressure they can't recover.

Well it should have no disruption and as with covid being around for over 2.5 years now the AB's will have planned for this.

Love these comments from assistant coach Mooar

“In terms of how the team is, we’re seamless,” said Mooar. “It’s not an unforeseen event. Covid has been around us for a couple of years now and we’ve planned for what will happen in this situation. Right now we’re preparing for Ireland, Plum and Foz have been zooming in, Feeky takes over on the ground with the forwards, and we just connect really closely.

“I’m really confident that, with the machine around us and the way it’s been set up, we won’t miss a beat.”

Lets see come Saturday

Hard to believe it would have *no* impact. Planning for something to happen is different from it not having an impact. Having your likely first-choice players not available also will have some impact. Hard to measure, but they aren't first choice for no reason :)

Like you say, Saturday night will tell, though hard to know if a bad performance is that, first game of the season, etc etc... We have traditionally had a scratchy couple of games.

IMO they won't do any worse without Foster there.

That's for sure, reckon it's a bonus not having him & Plumtree there.

Will Jordan gone now, with Covid. I wonder how many players they lose before pulling the plug.

Jordan was one of only 3 players in the team that has never had covid. They will be glad this is a home series so can pull in plenty of support players

Well, reinfection is a thing. They are clearly having an outbreak. Reiko is questionable with his hamstring I think, we might be exposed in centers, Jordie may get his shot.

Ireland A may be playing AB's B at this stage I suspect. If they can't win against us in those circumstances, people might need to take a deep breath.

The first time Ireland beat us, we were ravaged by injury and played a number of players out of position and in some positions third+ choice players.
