artbloke:It's astonishing that you don't know the diff between slagging & poor coaching.

I mentioned what we basically need to do in the 1st test tactically etc, but all you could do was moan about the other stuff.

Give it a rest.

Earbanean:

Phew!  Now that the CIA have finally taken out Ayman al-Zawahri, they and the international anti-terrorist community can focus properly on Ian Foster.

On another note, I see The Breakdown cast read Geekzone and follow this thread.  Interesting to see them repeating my calls for moving Jordan to fullback and Reiko to wing.  They were also nearly verbatim around my analysis of the dilemma at 6, where we could leave Barrett at 6 after being successful there, but risk throwing Vaai'i in against those Bok locks - or we could shift Barrett back in and go for a smaller 6.  Possibly a slightly undercooked Frizell.  Interestingly, they (like me) didn't reach a firm answer to nthat one.

The breakdown felt like Wilson and Muliaina grasping at straws. The Aotearoa Rugby Pod is a significantly better show, Parsons and Hall actually seem to think about what they are talking about.

You’ve made it clear what you think, it’s boring now and killing the thread.

It's nonsense to put it all on me, was only replying to what others were saying, it's also on others to stop bringing it up as well.

If Rieko Ioane is going to start it should be on the wing - reckon Jordon would do a top job at 15 - that gives us the option of moving Jordie Barrett to midfield where he played really well for the Canes, so I'd have a J.Barrett/Havili midfield combo, we haven't really had a settled midfield, so shouldn't really be an issue... I'd keep Scott Barrett at lock & play Akira Ioane at 6

Who misses out on a wing position in that reshuffle?

I'd have Clarke on the other wing... so on one flank we have the express pace of Ioane & on the other flank Clarke's pace & brutal power.

Reckon J.Barrett would be a great option in midfield, at 6'5'' he's able to stand in the tackle with 2 or 3 defenders hanging on to him & pass one-handed offloads to our players running off him to run through gaps... also like that both midfielders have very good kicking games, which just adds to our attack in midfield, with well weighted grubbers etc to turn teams around & apply good pressure.

Leaving Reece out given he is one of the form backs all Super Season and performs at a high level every game for the AB's seems pretty tough going. Reece offers better footwork and more around the park generally than Clarke who is like a fast hammer, and having Clarke and Reiko is too much of the same thing IMO.

Yeah, Reece is a top winger, but the Boks are a very physical team... so that's why I went for the bigger power winger in Clarke.

Ioane doesn't have the brutal power of Clarke, but he certainly has more pace than him, Ioane is deadly quick... so they're different types of wingers.

South Africa will box kick to compete a lot. The three best aerial players in the All Blacks are Jordie Barrett, Jordan and Caleb Clarke. If we can win the ball in the air we get a chance to play transition.

There’s only one test match standard 13 available this week so Rieko is bolted on at 13.

That's for sure, the Boks will play 10 man rugby using a heap of box kicks & a lot of rolling mauls.

Yeah, they were always going to play Rieko Ioane at 13... reckon J.Barrett would be far more effective though in that position than him.

They’ve developed their game a bit so it’s not really 10 man rugby but they play to their strengths which is aggression and power. De Allende is a gainline monster and standing up down route 1 is going to be important.

Fair point, they do run the ball a bit more than what they use to - Boks are excellent at lineout time, they always tend to challenge the oppositions ball & win a fair bit of possession through it, which I reckon we don't do enough of... we can't afford to give them too many lineouts inside our 22, their rolling mauls are really dangerous that close to our line.

So South Africa named their team on Wednesday and for some unknown reason NZR has decided to delay naming their team until the day before the match (Friday)?

Trying to give players some extra time to prove ok from injury perhaps?

Yeah, I've been really impressed with Parsons and Hall.  ARP is a good wee show.  Really good analysis.  Having said that, I think Jeff Wilson is very good on the Breakdown also.  Kirwan is all over the show, but that's part of the charm of the show.  The show is also about entertainment and he adds to that.  Mils has some good insights, but not on  the level of Wilson.

Yeah, I've been saying Jordie to 12 and Reiko to the wing for a while and interestingly, Wayne Smith said the same.  However, I think that would need an experienced centre and with ALB and Goodhue out, I don't think they'll do it.  I'm not sure Havili has played 13 much at all and it might be one change too many.  Also, with the kicking barrage coming our way, they want Jordie at the back.

I think later in the Championship and/or the end of year tour would be a good opportunity to really try the change, with Goodhue hopefully back.  Same would go for Barrett at 6, when Rettalick is back.

Yeah, probably too late to make too many changes, as you say that needs to be done down the track... Scott Barrett plays well at 6, which also gives us more height in the lineout.

Aaron Smith hardly fired a shot in Super Rugby & in the Irish series... he's getting older & looks to be past his best, he's had the edge over the other 9's for ages through his faster passing game, but now his passing service is definitely slower, hardly runs to keep the defence guessing, also kicks aimlessly most of the time.
