JPNZ:

So South Africa named their team on Wednesday and for some unknown reason NZR has decided to delay naming their team until the day before the match (Friday)?

I’m assuming the team will be named on Thursday South African time which will be Friday nz time. The all blacks are almost always named on a Thursday.

I just looked back at the last game between the teams in South Africa - Pretoria on 7th October 2018 NZ Time.

Your right the team was named on a Thursday BUT it was Thursday in NZ the 4th October.

So the team has been named but I’m on my mobile so can’t post the link.

Not many changes, Bower and Angus T prop samisono T at hooker. Akira at 6 and similar back line to previous with Clarke on the wing.

South Africa win IMHO

It's a bold call to bring Clarke in to start in his first test of the year against the Boks. Not sure I'd have done it. Players who have been out for a while, are usually introduced via the bench, but they must have confidence he is at 100%.

This is probably a big test for Havilli who has been criticised for his lack of physical presence, though I am not convinced that for every test we need a battering ram at 12 though this test we might.

I think the Boks will smell blood and throw everything they have at us early, in the hope to gain a lead at the start the way Ireland did. I remain concerned that in our effort to raise our intensity we risk a mistake that could cost us a player. I guess that could work both ways.

Given NZR's refusal to back Foster makes his job so much harder. He basically must win one of the two tests, and probably two. The issue being if we want player development, then we need to take some risks. If we take risks, they might not pay off immediately, but the public expects (unrealistically in my opinion) immediate improvements. In not replacing Foster, but in replacing his assistants, they should have backed him then, through to the world cup and made the statement to the public, that whilst results were not within expectation, changes had been made, that were required and now there would be a period where those changes would bed in and results may continue to be less than optimal.

I'm nervous for this test, I'll be happy if we show better intent and execution, and IF we lose, that it's pretty close.

Have no worries about Clarke starting, the bloke will be really fired up for this one... if they give him too much space he'll power through & over the top of players, with our players running off him he's going to be a big asset.

Havili is never going to be big enough to be a real physical presence, he isn't that type of midfielder, but doe's give us an attacking kicking game in midfield, has good pace & offloading skills & his defence is solid... reckon you always need one power runner in midfield that can consistently get us over the advantage line.

Reckon it's crucial we hit them hard from the start & try & keep that urgency going throughout the whole match, as they'll be trying to do the same to us.

I hope you are right, the guy hasn't played a pro game of Rugby for 3 months! It's a fair bit to ask.

Traditionally, we have absorbed pressure for 50 minutes and then opened the taps. That isn't working as well right now, esp since teams have closed the gap and can go 80 minutes+ with us.

He's not going to be that match fit, but to start him must be 100% fit... if we were talking about a forward it would probably be more of an issue as the forwards do most of the hard yakka.

Yeah, we tend to be slow starters... would like us to start well against all teams, putting them on the back foot straightaway.

We’ve got a pretty good chance in these two games.

We’ve had good results recently against South Africa and the Ryan forward play will be new for South Africa. If Foster survives the real test will be the northern tour, anything new will have been analysed by then.

I agree with this. I am nervous but quietly confident.

I'm expecting our forwards to make really good improvements through Ryan - like how he basically said take away the clutter & concentrate on executing the basics well... that really applies to anything you do if you want to do a good job.

Would've preferred de Groot & Coles to start in the front row, both play with real mongrel, which is what you need against a Boks team... at Coles age he can probably on last about 40-50 minutes, but with him starting reckon we'd go better in the first half & there's his leadership too.

Somehow Mark Robinson is making Ian Foster a sympathetic character. I’m sure he’s heard of constructive dismissal. What a clown show, how could he possibly think this wouldn’t leak?
