Batman:

artbloke:

Scott Robertson will only do the job if he can select his own squad, which is completely understandable, if he isn't allowed to do that, then the next logical choice is Ryan or bring in another couple of coaches to do the job.

if that be so, then the ABs are bordering on commercial commodity and beginning to lose touch as a max performance sports team

HOWEVER, if the ABs win on Sunday against all odds we won't be needing to discuss this

We could get the win if we minimize our mistakes a lot etc... but winning that match wouldn't make everything fine, just masking over the cracks, there is still ongoing selections & tactical issues.

Yet again in that test last week we didn't protect our ball properly at the breakdown, which allowed them to really slow our possession down a heap of times, giving them plenty of time to easily smother us - again we didn't adapt, just tried to run the ball through the backs or forwards making it easy for them to nullify us... in those type of situations B.Barrett should be standing a bit deeper, kicking long wipers towards the corners or sidelines, with the opposition standing up so flat there has to be acres of space behind them to kick into, forcing them to scramble back, taking a lot of pressure off us.

in general the NZ rugby supporters have good insight & are giving constructive criticism, they can see how badly we have played over a pretty long period, also know where adjustments need to be made to get us back on track again, makes it very frustrating that we keep making the same mistakes, as well as continuing to use poor tactics etc

So the general public like you and me should be coaching the AB's? I'd be up for that, I'll get a new couch to show my commitment...

My point is, its VERY easy to be an armchair critic

@jpnz what says you of this selection? :)

There are some people saying Mo'unga goes missing in big tests, but he doesn't strike me as someone who is overawed by the big occasions... I see it more a symptom of the All Blacks asking him to play a different role for them than he does for say the Crusaders.. He rarely challenges the line and distributes instead. If the forwards can get parity and we don't make too many big mistakes, there is a chance. It's a huge ask though. I hope they can get it done.

Front row is best of the worst, weak at 7, and the centres will still be useless. Mo'unga will offer nothing that Beauden didnt and has a history as an AB - just a fact, likely to lose again.

Same old, same old isin't it... Cane shouldn't be there, Rieko should be on the wing, Jordan should be at fullback, reece should be on the wing, Frizzell shouldn't be near the team and we should be playing a proper 8 in Sotutu or grace.

I think it maybe closer than last week but will be surprised if we push them close. That will be the end of Foster fingers and toes crossed

Heh, not sure when existing combinations aren't really firing would it be smart to make that many changes at once?

Akira paid the price for a lack of physicality last week, Grace isn't in the team at all. Reiko can't move to the wing as we don't really have a viable alternative to him at center. Tupea might get there but not sure I'd make that change if making the others too. I didn't think Reiko was that bad last week, but the combination of him and Havilli clearly needs time to develop (and yes, I agree he is a winger not a center for my money too). Reece offers more overall than Clarke despite Clarke being a fine winger, though with Jordan on the other wing, we probably need 'power' winger on the other side.

I think having Jordie on the park who is a bigger guy as the last line of defense and being quite a bit taller appeals, though if Jordan was at FB, it would allow Reece and Reiko/Clarke to play Wing. My primary concern with Clarke is that he is pretty much a one trick pony. He is fast, but really just runs in straight lines and doesn't really step, the way someone like Reece does. He has had good results from bumping players off at Super Rugby Level but against teams like SA's who's players are bigger, I am not sure he is going to get the same mileage.

Obviously the NZ rugby supporters don't get any actual say on how the ABs should be run - but it isn't rocket science mate, not difficult to see what's going wrong & where improvements need to be made... one part as mentioned is to execute a much smarter kicking game, especially when we're receiving slower ball.

Amazed Aaron Smith is starting - Fakatava isn't even in the 23, he needed to start or is the bloke injured ? ...just hope Mo'unga plays his natural game like he does for the Crusaders, with pop kicks into plenty of space & long kicks into open spaces, also runs at the line, we need accurate variations in our tactics at 10.

In the front row, good to see de Groot starting, Lomax showed good promise early on, but hasn't really come through, so hope he performs well, would've started Coles at hooker, is he injured ?

I find some of the criticism of Foster a little difficult to fathom. Gregor Paul saying our midfield isn't sorted as yet. We have had injuries and illness that have prevented us starting any combination of midfielders for any period of time. Reiko is the only consistently available midfielder this season (and even he had a foot injury), though if ALB and Goodhue were fit, one wonders if and where he would fit? You can't play those who aren't available.

It's pretty hard to sort a great 6 when NZ doesn't have many 6's who consistently perform. I don't really feel that there were that many performances even at the super rugby level that made me feel like the choice was obvious.

Coles had a very average game last week. Could just be the lack of match fitness.

Thought his performance was ok, as you say could have a bit to do with lack of match fitness... when he came on we were well & truly on the back foot anyway.
