To chip in my 10 cents (pun intended) - the problems and the questions are many.

Yes, the Pumas had a brick wall defence, and yes a tactic is to chip over the top.  However, in doing so, you need to be confident of recovering the ball, and the ABs are not.  Our problem in this regard is that while we might initially recover it, we're being out numbered and out muscled at the breakdown, where our best results these days is slow ball, with a turnover or penalty for not releasing being the other outcomes.  This won't be fixed until we have a higher level of coordination and enthusiasm in the backline for kick chasing, and loose (and tight) forwards who get there early and with menace.  I think we miss Sevu Reece for his kick chasing and loose forward abilities, as Caleb Clarke is not often (ever?) seen in that role.  Neither is Will Jordan for that matter, but then he's a fullback - when are they going to play him there, or will they bleed the form out of him like once happened to Christian Cullen when they moved him out of position?

A good question is why Cody Tailor throws a lot better to the same locks, and with some of the same props, when he plays for the Crusaders?  Something doesn't smell right here, and I don't think it's different opposition.  Also, to be fair, that last throw didn't look any worse to me than many that go unpunished and may have been us jumping across that didn't help it, so he may have been a tad unlucky there.  No excuses for the rest of his half though - he looked uncharacteristically nervous to me.

Aaron Smith - as soon as his leg goes out straight it will 100% be a box kick.  The opposition sometimes have as much as 10-20 secs to get prepared.  He needs to address this unless it's his (very obvious) signal to his own team and they take that long to get ready.

Where on earth were the off-loads on Saturday?  We seemed obsessed with trying to break the line, when a more effective tactic may have been to simply attract and absorb a tackler and feed a shoulder runner.  By trying to push through we let them bind and isolate us.  Similarly, the pod structure of forwards running it up may have had it's day or needs some variation, as it's a pretty easy read where the ball is going.

And for those who say a coach doesn't make a difference - bollocks!  They're responsible for setting the mood, the attitude, and the belief.  In the second half, one team had attitude and belief, and the other didn't.  There is so much wrong with the way the ABs are playing at the moment they need some serious help, and they don't seem to be getting it from Foster.

That was decent insight, thanks for that.

I thought this was an interesting statistic in an article by Gregor Paul.

Foster's win ratio of 63 per cent is the worst of any All Blacks coach in the professional age, and yet it is better than the 57 per cent which Springboks coach Jacques Nienaber has produced in the same period and considerably higher than the 38 per cent Dave Rennie has managed with the Wallabies.

Argentina's win rate up until Cheika took over was 34% and has jumped to 66% since. I recall Chieka being described week in and out for the longest time as the worst coach of any international team in recent times.

Interesting how? Nienaber has been slammed online by media and fans, Dave Rennie is trying to right a sinking ship that's been at rock bottom for nearly two decades, his task is monumental compared to Fosters. Not to mention no-one in Australia gives a toss about the sport so his stocks are low. Chieka has nearly double his win %, hammered Australia and beaten ABs IN New Zealand for the first time ever, so not sure what your point is here.

You trying to compare Fosters winning percentage? To what end? He's been in charge for 3 years and gotten worse. Them facts are all you need.

Handle9: Expecting a rational assessment in this thread? Bold move.

You two should make a private echo chamber topic where you can back and forward with each other for jollys.  This is officially the worst AB team of the professional game, and this coaching team has been in place for 3 years, plenty of time to "rebuild". People will have critique of the team, and so they should.

Fundamentally this AB team shows a lack of ability to adapt under pressure.

Lol. I’ll continue to post whatever I like, if you don’t like it that’s your problem.

I think it's funny you'd accuse me of being part of a small group that could create an echo chamber. Pot meet kettle.

You went on and on and on about the fact Robinson and NZRU behaviour was fine toward Foster, crickets after they mentioned 6+ times in that announcement video that they should have handled things better.

I agree that the team shows a lack of ability to adapt under pressure, having said that, it's rarely a skill learned without pressure, and takes time to develop.

The AB's of the past learned it, they didn't just click fingers and magic it up.

You don't always have to recover the ball straightaway from a kick, key is to kick accurately to space to apply plenty of pressure... to protect our own ball at the breakdown we definitely need to get more numbers there with real aggression, but making sure it's controlled aggression, so we don't give away silly penalties.

Our line out is about a combo of things, accurate throwing, good timing from our lifters, and our jumper attacking the ball in the air, making sure he gets in front of the opposition jumper.

All 9's plant their foot back, making it very predictable they're going to box kick... they probably all use that technique because it gives them a good solid foundation to execute that type of kick.

Forwards need decent front foot ball to consistently start offloading, if there's too much pressure on them & they start offloading 50/50 passes they're going to make too many errors.

Pods are still a good tactic, but they need to be varied more, they're too easy to read if you keep going up the middle into the traffic all day long, attack with pods a few metres wider of the traffic each time, using both sides of the field to try & open up gaps.

Most do, not all, but the issue with Smith is for how long and how obvious he is when he does it. It's very obvious and telegraphed.

Most box kicks by all halfbacks are obvious and telegraphed. The use of a caterpillar and blockers give it away.

It’s not a surprise tactic.

Sure, but if it's not a prolonged period before the kick, it gives less time for the defense to marshall. Smith does seem to take an age to set himself usually.

Nah, he's usually setting his block. Once the block is set he normally kicks quite quickly.

The majority of box kicks by NZ are on corner exits with static ball. The bigger issue with NZs kicking game isn't how long it takes it's how bad the chase tends to be.

Everyone is very deliberate with most box kicks, it's not at all unique to NZ.

Smith does take a bit to long to set up his box kick - but if we defend well around the edges they're not going to get to him in time anyway... the real concern for me is how slow he is at doing everything in the halfback role, think he's 33 or 34 now, he'll be a year older when the RWC starts, and even slower too, Foster hasn't got the insight to drop him though.

There's no excuses though for poor chasing from box kicks... the ball only travels about 30 odd metres downfield, & hangs in the air for a pretty long time, more to do with the chaser getting the timing of his jump right.

Foster seems to be determined to let Cane play into form, rather than drop or bench him to achieve it.

It's positive that the front row is being consistently picked, I think they are our best choices at present. Taylor dropped as expected.

RM at 10, probably the right call, he needs consistent time starting. Brodie and Papali'i on the bench.
