Dingbatt:

Handle9: Jeez. Savea and Aldritt not nominated for world player of the year. That’s something. I’m not sure what.

The useless Ruahei Demant and Portia Woodman did get nominated for woman’s player of the year.

Okay, I’ll bite.

Are you suggesting Portia Woodman, the record holder for Rugby World Cup tries, is useless? Or is it just the way you’ve phrased it?

No it’s Demant who is useless despite being player of the match in the World Cup final. That was clearly established earlier in the thread*.

Utterly ridiculous that Savea didn't get nominated, he'd have to consistently be the best player in the world this year, even when we were playing crap the bloke was still performing at a very high level.

You must be pretty naive if you still don't know what I meant about Demant - also what did she do to earn ' player of the match ' ? honestly I hardly noticed her... players like Cocksedge, Bremner & Rule performed far better than her in the final.

Are you sure you weren't watching another match? You are *literally* the only person I know of who holds that opinion of her.

It was generally a useful game. Some players stood up, some played their way out of the side. To do that in a reasonably comfortable win is nice. We lost our way for a bit but we were ahead going into the last 10 and kicked clear.

A lot of guys needed the run and there are only a few opportunities left before the World Cup.

Laulala, Christie, Havilli, ALB at 13 were poor, Taylor, TJP, Bower, Newell, Frizzell all made significant impact when they came on. ALB was very good at 12 and Telea had a really good debut and moves ahead of Fainganuku as an out and out winger. Akira and Beauden Barrett did good things and bad things.

Taukei'aho looks nearly out of gas, it's been a long year for him and he'll do well to have a rest over the summer.

TJ Perenara was the big winner on the day, his impact on driving the forwards and settling Beauden Barrett down probably made the difference. Taylor was a close second, he had his best game in a long time.

Interested to know who you think played themselves out of the side?

TJP is still very hit-and-miss. The first XV game he played he was utterly awful. That game against Scotland was his best test in a very long time from a distribution perspective. If he plays like that week in and out, I'd be happy, but if he goes back to his usual ponderous and more than occasional inaccurate service, no thanks!

I feel Fainganuku wasn't really given much of a chance. 1 test where did not play as well as he might and hasn't been seen since. Usually, the AB's give a player a bit more of a chance than that. He certainly wasn't awful, but not great.

Agree on Taylor, he had a good game.

Our lineout is still a mess. Operating at 85% which is the worst by some ways in the top-tier international teams and the worst we have been for a while. I am surprised it hasn't gotten more attention and been fixed.

If we play England the way we did Wales, then I would expect us to win, if we don't, I expect us to lose.

Handle9: Ian Foster robbed in the World Rugby coach of the year nominations.

You mean Schmidt was robbed of a ' world rugby coach of the year nomination ' ...if it wasn't for the Schmidt/Ryan coming to fix Foster's mess, we would still be in a deep hole.

That's the type of silly comment I'd expect from you... give me reasons why you think she deserved the award ?  because as said before, she didn't perform better than players like Cocksedge, Bremner & Rule.

How do you explain our poor performances whilst they have been involved then? Japan, Scotland?

There's no point trying to have a logical discussion with artbloke.

What he sees is what he sees and it doesn't matter if nobody else sees it (even if that's the officials giving out player of the match awards, or the panel tasked with coming up with nominees for player of the year).

Those poor performances against Japan & Scotland were basically due to too many changes in each of those matches, therefore it's very difficult to get consistent continuity going - that's not on the other two coaches, they're doing a great job drilling the backs & forwards... it's on Foster, he's the head coach, so has complete control on naming the starting 15 & bench.

I reckon Demant got the award because she was captain & the feel good feeling of winning the cup, sure as hell wasn't about her performance.

Wonder why she's been named in the team of the tournament?  They should have checked with you before being that stupid.

I knew it (and posted it a few days ago), the good performances are due to Ryan and Schmidt - the bad ones are due to Foster.  It's so obvious.  Pretty sure Foster was involved in the Ukraine invasion too.  What a shambles.

Oh, and here's Wayne Smith's comments on Demant:

“She’s one of the best players I’ve ever had in a team,” Wayne Smith said of his fly-half and captain after the final win. "She’s led this team phenomenally and she’s consistently been the best player on the field. I give her all the credit. She has been outstanding.”

But what does a muppet like Wayne Smith know?

Thought I had made that clear (good reasons). Those responsible for the player of the match award made the decision she was the best. I would guess, without knowing your pedigree, that they are far more qualified to make that decision. I supported that with the fact that she had been nominated for player of the year. Again I assume those tasked with making those nominations are better placed to do so than you.

There has been extra support in a more recent post (thanks Earbanean) here where Wayne Smith outlines his belief about Demant. Bearing in mind he's been with this team for many, many months, I would be happy to take his opinion over yours. I don't believe you have the same vitriol towards Wayne Smith as you do towards Foster, so would be happy to take Smith's word as accurate.

If you need something else here's a link to an article from The Guardian (hardly a bastion for support of NZ sport);

https://amp.theguardian.com/sport/2022/nov/12/new-zealand-england-womens-rugby-world-cup-final-player-ratings

"Ruahei Demant (capt) Player of the final. Pressured a Harrison kick to go out on the full which led to winning try. Dependable and inspirational leader. 9"

But you keep doing you....
