No one has Rieko pace. If he’s not the quickest player in the world he’s close.

Clarke is still rapid. At school he ran a 10.7 second hundred metres. It’s worth having a look at the YouTube video he did for world rugby with Capuozzo, who is extremely quick - ask Australia.

Defensively, he is *awful*, and it impacts the whole backline. Given we have Reece, I'd be giving Clarke some time 'off' to fix that part of his game.

Clarke just needs to play. He's not going to improve by not playing. He's got the physical attributes to dominate at international rugby so they'll give him every chance to develop.

I don't think he'd play if they were playing a World Cup final tomorrow but it's a year away.

This weekend will be really cool. Retalick will play his 100th test and Farrell will play his 100th test for England (he's got 6 Lions tests on top).

They have both been great players for a long time, it's thoroughly deserved for both of them.

Handle9: It’s really quite amazing how Rassie Erasmus has destroyed his reputation. South Africa were such a great story in 2019 but his constant bleating about referees have destroyed any semblance of goodwill towards them. The sooner he disappears the better.

Aaaaaaand he’s banned again. Muppet.

Richie Gray has been banned for 3 games for a dangerous clean out in the All Blacks test. I’m assuming it’s on Scott Barrett but it’s not clear.

Dupont got 4 weeks and PSDT got 3 weeks.

Like it or not, Reiko is a center, even if he is in most peoples view, a decent winger. I'll be surprised if you see him on the wing unless they have an injury crisis or feel it would work particularly well against a particular opposition.

Yip. He’s been the best outside centre in the country by a long way this year.

Trying to say he’s not a centre after the impact he had against Scotland is daft. His defence alone justifies his selection.

He's certainly our fastest 13, but definitely not our best 13 though... can't really rate him that much in the Scotland match, he was fresh off the bench, so should have plenty of energy/urgency, you'd expect any player coming off the bench to make a really good impact.

He has been the best centre this year - but mainly because ALB and Goodhue have been out pretty much the whole year.  Big strong fast centres are nice, but organisation and distribution skills, like Conrad Smith, are more important against test defences.  That's why Nonu and Smith were such a complimentary and effective midfield combination.  That's why Wayne Smith and I both like Barrett and ALB as a combination.  There's not enough time left this season to make the change, but maybe next year.  Although, that's getting pretty close to the big dance.

The last, and theoretically top, All Blacks team of the year has been named.  Good to see the selectors have followed my long-standing advice of Jordie at 12 and Barrett at 6 - even in the midst of loads of negativity from Geekzone pundits.  They've taken the pragmatic solution of keeping Reiko at 13 for now, but hopefully we'll see ALB slotting in there later in the game.

I guess it's good to see Telea rewarded for his impressive debut, and this is a good way to find out if he has the goods in a real pressure test match.  A bit hard on Reece though, as he's done nothing wrong.  I think they're both competing for back-up spots though anyway, with Jordan still to come back next year and possibly Reiko moving back to wing at some point as well.

Jordie Barrett is a world class player who you consistently talked about not having the "temperament" for test rugby. He's won games for New Zealand and played extremely consistently for the last 3 years.

At least when trying to pitch this angle you had the decency to include the past tense.

You are right, I did say that, and I stand by that, but I also haven't said that for quite some time. I felt he wasn't ready for test rugby at the time I made those comments, and had good reasons for saying that. He has adjusted and is less erratic than he was. I believe I surmised he had the potential to be amazing, but needed another year of SR and skip a year of international duties to hone.

I don't think he's as good as you clearly do, he wasn't very good as a winger, which is because he isn't a winger, he is at best an average attacking fullback, though his height and usually, his defense is as an assett, esp for taking cross-kicks. For me, he looks natural, and able to have the most impact at 12, and I'll admit I wasn't a fan of the idea of putting him there, and happy to be proven wrong, if he can consistently deliver there.

I don't think we are significantly better off with Jordie than any other fullback we would have put in his place and spent as much time honing. IE, you'd certainly hope he was OK given the investment made in him.

PSDT's punishment is an absolute joke. It was a disgraceful piece of thuggery.  I am a LITTLE surprised Dupont got 4 weeks, though the potential for that to have been incredibly serious was pretty bad.

I do find it a little surprising that Dupont is in the list of player of the year candidates unless the period of eligibility excludes the timeframe where the red card was given. In real life, if you were up for a prestigious award and caused potential serious injury due to carelessness, regardless of intent, you'd probably be considered ineligible.

I saw someone on Reddit suggest that cleanouts from the ruck should be required to occur from a standing start and I think there is some great merit to that. I'd also suggest perhaps no more than x meters from the ruck.

You might want to watch the analysis on the Aotearoa Rugby Pod. They don't think it's as clear cut as you do.

https://www.rugbypass.com/aotearoa-rugby-pod/

They bought up the same mitigating factors that the judicial panel commented on:

"The Disciplinary Committee found the player's offending to be "reckless" (and not intentional or deliberate), and although there were some external factors identified with respect to the incident, they were not, on the evidence before the judicial committee , of a sufficient degree to justify a reclassification of the offending to below red card."

He was world player of the year in 2019 and I thought I read somewhere that this was his first card, although I can't find any stats to back that up. Doesn't sound like a thug to me. Sometimes shit goes wrong when playing at pace - he got a red card, been suspended, let's move on.

Agree there’s zero evidence that he’s a thug. He was crying on the bench after being sent off. I’ve never seen him involved in intentional violence. He got the clean out wrong, which is common,

Retalick did exactly the same thing a couple of weeks ago, he just had a slightly different contact point. That was luck, he was equally out of control.

There was zero surprise that Dupont got 4 weeks. That’s the suspension for that offence for an offender with a good record. It’s the same as Arrendse got for the Beauden Barrett incident.

The sooner this prick is out of rugby the better. He really is the Trump of rugby. He doesn’t care who he hurts, it’s all about him.
