Smithy100: The biggest thing for me was the reluctance to change tactics. Especially after the lessons of '07, the reluctance of "the leadership group" to change tack almost makes me wonder whether it was instructed from those above NOT to change.

There were no kicks through/behind the line.

Lol snap, I was just typing the exact same comment...

There were no kicks through/behind the line. No one out running from the forwards to draw in defenders. No deep kicking to get the ball deep into Wabbalies territory. No standing deeper to get the Gold jerseys out of our backline... it was just same after same.

It almost seemed too stupid to be real. Either that or it's 07 again.

My team for Eden Park: Bender, Skud, Snakey, Bus, Ma'a, Sops, Nugget, RM (yes, at No8), Cane, Reido, Retallick, Whitelock, Woodcock, Coles, Laulala.

I know, it won't happen.

Best chuckle all day, what I bolded on your comment above. Typo, so what, but say it!  :-)

joker97:

Question is, if the AB is prevented from running the ball, do they know how to win?

Exactly.  Only we play the flairy rugby we enjoy, the Northern Hemisphere doesn't.  They'll spend all day wallowing slowly in the mud and kicking high point drop goals to win games.

Defence really is the best form of attack against the rugby game we play.
Normally you'd chip it over any team that flat, quick and forward on defence attack, but we're now staunch about keeping the ball in hand too, so we don't utilise that option anymore.
Well apart from SBW.
Seriously though, when did you last see DC do the Christian Cullen type chip over the top, collect the other side and back yourself to run with it style?

Game plans are great, and allow you to pick how to pull apart the opposition, but you have to be flexible to realise and adapt if it aint working.

Yep. SBW did that in front of our eyes, did not know what would be best, so kicked it to them. Maybe the coach decided the best tactics, and the players did that, and when it was no good, they had no answer? Surely Richie would be on top of that?

Lightbulb moment. Maybe that's what happened?

Coz Richie was visibly frustrated during the match and post match he said he didn't know why all the things they practiced wasn't able to be executed, Then became choked up and lost for words.

Maybe that's what happened. Plan A tick. Plan B, she'll be right.

I'd like them to cancel those short passes. They look great, but what the benefit in passing 2 feet, maybe 3? When the later passed it was high, slow passes.  Where are the flat, hard passes that take valuable half seconds away from the opposition's reaction time? I bet they are easier to catch than a swifty  at 2 foot range.

The idea of the short pass is to put the person into space. If you're running the ball and 2 players are about to tackle you theoretically you've created an overlap, and most likely there will be a larger gap next to you because of the 2nd committed defender. Obviously it's not going to work every time, but see the Coles try against SA for a good example of that.

Fully agree if you can draw the opposition away from your team mate and then slip him the ball.
What I saw though was two ABs running at a flat line of 4 guys in front of them, and one passing the ball the to next guy to smash into the opposition, with no gaps being made at all.

It was just passing for passings sake, which leads to mistakes and knock-ons etc.  The second guy receiving the hospital pass has to catch the ball quickly and then assume a stance to get smashed in.  The first guy was going to get that anyway, so nothings gained.  Normally I don't go on about rugby much, but this was just happening all the time.

I think people who do this every day of their lives know what they're doing. No need to tell them how to pass lol

I think it's more when than how personally.  But agree and acknowledge that this is just talk wink

I think we suffered from poor execution rather than poor tactics. The short passing game in the tight is where (with proper execution) we will beat the physically bigger teams.

blair003: Nobody cares about the rugby championship in world cup year.

Really?
I guess everybody except NZ will be caring this year then.

In my view there are only two instances in which people will be talking about the 2015 rugby championship winners in future:
1) if Australia win the RWC, they will say it was a turning point
2) if NZ or SA win the RWC, they will say that the rugby championship is not an indicator of who will win the RWC (as was the case in 2011 when Aussie last won it)

Its not about what people are saying.

Its about keeping the Champions trophy.
I'm sure we can all agree that it would have looked pretty good next to the Bledisloe Cup (Which hopefully stays put after Saturday).

The short passes I refer to were 2 to 3 feet. Literally running alongside each other.

We have all seen loooong passes, sharp flat longish passes, and nippy short passes of the 2 to 3 feet variety we are yakking about. It happened a lot to begin with. High risk, and passes per distance thrown is a low result. Yes, they tried something, it was maybe too pre conceived and planned. I'd rather dummy a long looping pass then do a shortie. Being an armchair umpire I must know best!
