Handle9: It’s the final New Zealand 7s tournament this week. It’s kind of sad but also understandable with the condensed schedule from 2024. Is anyone going?

Conflicts with an overseas trip which is unfortunate. I'll miss this and the Elton John concert we have waited 3 years for! Plus side, I get an overseas trip!

Agreed. I can't see his personality being a suitable fit for RA. Having said that, he's probably a tougher personality than the coaches prior to him for the last quite a few years, he won't be scared to drop players who aren't meeting expectations.

I don't see this ending well in many ways.

He has Hansen-eque trolling skill though, I am expecting him to really get stuck into Foster and Co. He is a master of the mind games. To his credit Foster does seem to do a decent job of ignoring that kind of noise though.

He will be unbearable if he beats NZ at any point :)

The bledisloe will be 50% more entertaining in the next couple of years.

NZ Rugby will be quite delighted with the Jones signing. It really only leaves Robertson Italy, Japan or Scotland as possible destinations if he doesn't get the NZ job. I'd guess he'd be more likely to go to a club job unless someone throws a ton of money at him.

Wales, France, Australia, England and Ireland have all made appointments until at least 2025.

I couldn’t care less where the coaches are from. I care that they are genuinely the best coaches for international rugby and not pretenders riding on the coat tails of a very successful franchise. Coaching super rugby is a whole lot different from coaching international rugby.

The Canterblacks approach was tried and a failure. There’s no reason to think it’ll be successful.

You think Robertson is a pretender? Ryan too? Fluked 5 titles consecutively? Anyone could have done it?

Steve Hansens era seemed pretty successful. Canterbury coach and lots of Canterbury players. Not sure what you are going on about?

I'm not arguing for his promotion to coach of the AB's, I am actually fairly ambivalent about it, I think he's a great coach, and I'd like to see what he could do with the AB's, but I worry about his lack of international experience.

Who's the best coach for the job then?

The Freddie Burns signing by the Highlanders is odd. He’s a decent journeyman but signing 32 year old Englishmen isn’t doing much for NZ rugby.

There is every chance that former England No 10 Freddie Burns will turn out to be a solid signing for the Highlanders this year.
The 32-year-old, five-test former international has played at a high level for more than a decade, and by all accounts is a good character who will contribute strongly on and off the field.
But his recruitment is a further sign that the depth at No 10 in New Zealand isn’t what it was – and that’s before Richie Mo’unga, probably Beauden Barrett and possibly Damian McKenzie depart on overseas deals next year.
It’s a supply and demand issue, with the greatest stress coming from the demand side.
... mid-tier New Zealand operators such as Otere Black, Tom Taylor and Kaleb Trask are all playing in Japan, joining a broader group that includes but is certainly not restricted to Lachlan Boshier, Jacob Pierce, Tom Sanders, TJ Faiane, Vince Aso, Tevita Li and Bryn Hall. Angus Ta’avao has suffered a season-ending neck injury and the Chiefs have had to call on overseas support. That's a shame for Angus, who likely now won't make the world cup.

The thing about the Chiefs is they seem to do better when they are playing a least experienced team and have the underdog title.

I was quite surprised to see Vern Cotter stand down as coach of the Fijian National team 8 months prior to the RWC. Personal reasons were cited, but one wonders what they could have been?
