Scott Robertsons' comments this morning seem a little weird to me. I would have thought the primary communication on this type of stuff might have come from NZR.

Seems like whatever process they are undergoing to get a new coach could be all said and done in a fortnight or so. I wonder if they are considering other candidates or if this is going to be yet another poorly managed process.

I am not sure how you handle this without putting Foster into a pretty unfortunate position, but I don't really feel he has been managed well throughout his tenure. I think people in general deserve better.

You can’t drop someone who isn’t in the team.

What’s your source for Marler not being selected due to the sledging.

So it’s just media reports with no statement from Borthwick why he wasn’t selected.

You’re seeing what you want to see again.

Wow, just been reading the "news" about this. Seems somewhat odd and very poor way of managing HR issues. I am hoping its all very poor press coverage.

Squidges' video on Ireland vs Wales was really quite interesting, and his analysis of the first 20 minutes gave me horror flashbacks to the NZ tour, where Ireland seemed to almost score at will against NZ in the opening few minutes of each match. It was interesting to take what you see and have someone verbalise the mechanisms used.  I think his videos have gotten quite a lot better recently.

Wow, what a first half of Rugby the Ireland v France match was. Ireland are playing with unprecedented confidence and they really put France under pressure.  France did well to stay within touch on the scoreboard but really looked under a load of pressure by Ireland most of the match.

I scarcely believe that Ireland could miss nearly 40 tackles and still show that scoreline at the end. They did a great job of nullifying the French attack most of the time. Dupont made some pretty poor mistakes under pressure, but then made an absolute screaming defensive tackle too. Irelands kicking for the corners in play in the second half were fantastic. Lowe did really well in that regard, though I was extremely surprised how sluggish he looked scoring that try. If not for acrobatics and extremely small margins, he wouldn't have scored that try, and given the space he had and the position he plays, I've had expected more pace. France didn't put much pressure on with their non-existent kick chase.

The intensity of the first half really impacted the second half.  Ireland missed so many tackles but Ireland made France pay a much higher price for their ones. Ireland can definitely play for 80 minutes consistently now.

If Dupont and/or Ntamack get injured before or during the RWC, I'd say France's chances of winning the RWC are *significantly* lower.

What a great attitude this guy has. He's always impressed me on field, but not looking to blame everyone else for not making the AB's shows some decent maturity.

I wish him luck for this last campaign with the Chiefs, and with Munster once he moves.

Ahhh. Super Rugby off to the perfect start (from my perspective). Crusaders 10 Chiefs 31.
Although I do admit to thinking it was going to be business as usual at half time with the Crusaders leading the Chiefs 10-7. Particularly with the Crusaders monstering the first scrum and the talent to hand, I really expected a mauling.

What a different second half though. Admittedly the Crusaders yellow was more costly than the Chiefs one. But the Crusaders just seemed to go off the boil a bit at the same time as the Chiefs kicked up a gear.

If the pace that game was played at is an indication of the season ahead, it’s going to be a cracker. The refs are obviously going to keep the game moving, and about time too.

Can’t say I’m a fan of the stadium music playing continuously throughout the game. It was annoying and almost like they were admitting the rugby wasn’t entertaining enough on its own. But it was. Hope it was just a Christchurch thing.

Yeah, the Crusaders mostly looked pretty comfortable till the second half. The Chiefs are a team that seem to be able to get under the Crusaders skin more than any other and they outplayed us the entire second half. It's rare as anything to see the Crusaders not score a single point in a half.

Fair play to the Chiefs who really kept the pressure on the whole time.  Mo'unga looked massively out of sorts the whole game. Ennor looks to be making decent inroads back to where he was.

The pace of the game was frenetic for sure though. I like it quick, but it perhaps felt a little bit rushed in places. Will have to see how the season continues.

Because I was watching the game last night without the ability to rewind, there were a couple of plays I wanted to re-examine*. Both involved the energiser bunny that is Sevu Reece.

In the 56th minute Reece managed to carry the ball back behind the goal line and scramble back into the field of play. Where he was tackled and released the ball, but the ball clearly rolled forward. He then picked it up and made a few more metres. My question is, does the knock on rule not apply if you are placing the ball in a tackle? And if he maintained contact with the ball, then that means no knock on but also no release in the tackle?

In the same part of the field, in the last minute of the game. Hines lost the ball forward while covering a Chiefs kick, as Coombes-Fabling (Chiefs 14) bent down to pick up the ball, Reece toed it back towards his goal line, ironically into Hines who knocked it on again. At no time in the evolution was Reece behind Hines and hence was offside when he kicked the ball. My question is, does kicking the ball instead of handling it not constitute playing it in an offside position?
If it was offside play, then it prevented a try (less than 10m from the goal line) with a player clear outside Coombes-Fabling able to receive a pass. So a cynical professional foul? Maybe I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he kicked it out of Coombes-Fabling’s hands. But it didn’t look like it.

With such a fast paced game the ref can’t see everything, but in both cases his assistant was right there.

* Had no affect on the result. Just a bit of a head scratcher for me.
