AB's XV - A pretty dour match where not too many people would have made much of a case for being promoted. Maybe I am being a bit harsh given the 30c, but it all looked pretty rusty, and at times didn't even have the quality of a Super Rugby match. We should have won by a much more comfortable margin.

Black Ferns v Canada. It looked like it was going to be another romp, but Canada showed some grit and made a pretty impressive comeback, somewhat off the drop in accuracy and intensity from the BF's.  In the end, a pretty comfortable win.

AB's vs Argentina.  With a decidedly shaky start, we got many points early with some good touches. Initially, I was a little worried our forwards weren't up for it, but they controlled set piece and stretched a pretty unenthusiastic and uninspired Argentina side.  It wasn't nearly as good in the second half and to be honest, the scoreline flattered us with Argentina being as bad as I've seen them in recent years. I expect SA to be a significantly more robust challenge, though we are showing signs we are up for it.  Lots of talk about DM taking the starting 10 against SA but really!? He was a pretty mixed bag. Some nice touches, but several characteristic mistakes. Clarke didn't help his case any I don't think.

Started off jumping between the ABXV (why they can’t just be the NZ XV, I don’t know. Well actually I do. The All Blacks label sells tickets) and the Warriors/Eels game. Pretty quickly gave up on the Union and stuck with the League. I can only assume the ABXV exists to keep replacements match fit?

The Black Ferns have the flair, but get exposed by the rolling maul (dumb rule). The men’s game seems to have some counters to it, but not the Black Ferns yet.

I wonder if the low sun angle had any impact on the ABs/Pumas game? The ABs clearly had the edge, but not being able to see must make it even more difficult. Hence a clear ascendancy in the first half but more even in the second.

The first minute charge-down had me thinking “Oh no, here we go” but the ship was righted fairly quickly. The whole game may have been different if the Argentinian player had got to the ball first, leading to high Argentinian spirits and a bit of shell shock for the ABs.

I wouldn’t expect McKenzie to start against SA, I would think Mo’unga would be 10 with McKenzie off the bench and Barrett staying at fullback. The coaching team seem very keen on the “two play-maker” concept. And I remember when Carter injured himself at training during the 2011 RWC. I would rather have 3 match fit 10s available. The only thing is, Mo’unga is a specialist 10, Barrett and McKenzie 10/15.

I also think it’s time to put Fainga'anuku in instead of Clarke. While some Super Rugby teams showed Fainga'anuku could be negated, he has the ‘X Factor’ whereas Clarke’s play is one dimensional. I wonder if Fainga'anuku’s departure at the end of the year is colouring the selector’s thinking. I hope not.

The Lord/Barrett combo at lock worked well and gives me heart that that position is covered when the old warhorses (Whitelock & Retallick) hang up their boots.

As far as I’m concerned, any pitch invader gets what they deserve. That individual should thank his lucky stars Cane only leg tripped him. If he had tackled him like he did some of the Pumas players (worthy of “Smashed ‘im bro!”) he would have stayed down. The only thing Cane did wrong was feeling he needed to apologise.

Yes, I agree Mo'unga needs to start against SA. Also, agree on the 3 fit 10's.

XV exists for a few reasons. One is fitness, we are likely to need some of these players. Some of them needed some more time in the saddle (Goodhue etc), it also gives hope to some fringe players that they can still make a case for the AB's.

Anyone who thinks Sam Cane should be dropped is quite frankly, a fool. The man is so underrated for his work. He flies under the radar, but the unsexy stats show how important he is to the forward pack. He allows people like Savea to work his magic. Some of his tackles were completely massive.

Yes, lock is starting to develop, but I had hoped we were further along, next year I expect to be quite difficult because even now there is still quite a big gap. Halfback is starting to show some promise, though Christie could stand to lose the slight delay in his pass.

10 is going to be a problem next year. We have MacKenzie, RM and BB are gone. Who is next cab off the rank? The cupboard seems bare and it's strange it's not something that is getting more press.

Hopefully, our U20's under performance at the Youth world cup isn't an indication of where we are heading as a nation.

Blame Covid. I’m going to when the ABs don’t win the RWC 😁

Ireland and France U20's look exceptional. If that's what's coming and they can carry on in that form, then the world is in trouble.

The Springboks have named a very strong team. It's a fraction concerning.

We are going to need to put in a massive performance to meet that challenge. I'd love to see us do it, but I won't be surprised, nor overly concerned if we don't, unless we get properly spanked. If it's close then we know we are in the ballpark at least.

Wowsers, wasn't expecting Tonga to beat Australia A. That's pretty grim.  Hopefully, that isn't an indication of what else is coming this weekend.

Good result. But I despair at the return of the short high bomb when on defence. About three completely pointless turnovers at a time where simply could have just held onto the ball or played a proper territory game.

The most polished start to an international season for quite some time.

Promising stuff in World Cup year!

That was an excellent improved performance against the Springboks.

Can we win the RWC if we perform based on that performance plus further development, yes, I believe we can. That was pretty much the first choice Springboks side, and we did well.

The first 20 minutes were fun, but the rest of the game, esp when we were under pressure is what tells us where we are at. Even under pressure, we did pretty well, and that's very encouraging. Our forwards are so much better than they were. Ardie Ragdolling EE was an indication on how much more physical we are. We were winning the collisions, making the gain line, and dominating tackles for large periods of the game. SA weren't at their best, but the scoreline flattered them a little given Mapipi's try came from a forward pass and should have been disallowed.

That was the best performance by Ritchie Mo'unga in a black jersey overall. Excellent goal kicking. He possibly doesn't have the same unpredictable and quick-fire feet of DM, but his game management and vision, are far superior.

Unsurprisingly, stupidly light punishment for disgraceful conduct.

Sexton will miss Ireland’s pre-tournament warm-up games against Italy, England and Samoa.

Oh my! Well, that will certainly learn him. He won't ever do that again! /s

Wouldn't be a World Cup without the traditional star NH player getting a pathetic ban from a NH judiciary.

From memory last time it was Farrell so I'm glad the Irish are getting a look in. I suppose that's progress.

I strongly dislike Frizell due to his off-field behaviour. He did however have a massive game, and if he can continue that form (something he has struggled to do consistently but did do during SR this year), that will really help our chances.

Another pretty quiet game from Clarke again. I don't get Christie continued to be picked as halfback, other than 1 big moment in that game. Though I guess bringing on a debutant in a game like that may not be ideal.

I am hoping that moving forward, replacements are more seamless for the AB's. It has not been great of recent times. It has traditionally been a strength of ours. It caused our 3rd quarter to get quite messy.
