JPNZ:

I see that the 2024 super rugby schedule is out and the Blues & Moana have listed all their home games as TBC.

Eden Park could be gone?

On TVNZ1 News tonight, the CEO (?) of the Blues said, in effect, that Eden Park is too expensive for Super Rugby games.
It's too big a venue for the generally small crowds they get.

It may just be an attempt to get a cheaper price, but maybe not

If you want a central stadium that most fans in the region have some way of accessing, the cost of using it is always going to be high. It's going to be no cheaper if you have to cover the cost of a smaller but brand new stadium in the central city. Shunting the Blues games to Albany would be an absolute scandal given the Shore's chequered relationship with the Blues - for many of us it's still Chiefs country and many of the Shore happily say the same.

Could Mt smart alternate both between MP and Blues? Perhaps some larger derby matches at Eden and the rest spread around. I have no idea on what size average blues home crowds are because as usual NZR won't let the media publish any crowd info.

Owen Farrells father (head coach for Ireland) protesting at the way his Son has been treated since his red card. Strangely doesn't say a word about his sons repeated thuggery or the injustice of the lack of punishment for it. Dads gonna Dad as he said prior, but I think with such a biased view I'd probably have stayed Mum on the whole thing.

NZ have leapfrogged France as favourites to win RWC2023 since Ntamack has been ruled out. I'd feel a lot better with a benchmark test against a Northern Hemisphere team, Ireland or France at home prior to the start of it. I'd still rate us third, unless DuPont goes down. Ireland probably still have the goods against us, unless we can prevent them from slowing the ball. If we are allowed to play at pace, the referee minimizes 'breaks' then I'd suggest we should have decent chance.

Refeering in NPC has been very average so far. Having said that Waikato vs Hawkes Bay was a fantastic match to watch.

World Rugby appeals the Farrell decision. That's the right call.

Some great Rugby over the weekend. Canterbury put a cricket score on Manawatu. Minasa Matele and Mitch Drummond played Havoc. Mitch Drummond with 2 behind the back passes in a single phase to put Canterbury in the corner was one of the filthiest bits of skill I've seen in a long time.

Congrats to Northland who gave Tasman a spanking. Excellent attack and defence. I feel Tasman underestimated them and felt until the last 20 minutes they still have had to come back. Northland weren't having any of that.

I see Steve Hansen has joined the Wallabies for 3-4 days. My initial reaction was what the funk!? But the likelihood of him contributing significantly in 3-4 days is pretty low.

I think Eddie is going to give the RWC his best shot, but in my opinion, this squad selected indicates this is all about The Lions and RWC2027, giving those young guys a taste.

I'll be beyond surprised if Eddie is in charge then, but it's not the worst idea for the future. What they have tried until now hasn't worked.

TBH I think Tasman had one eye on this week's Ranfurly Shield challenge

Farrell gets four weeks. This is still a stupidly low sanction. He received a discount for 'good character' despite being involved in multiple head-high contacts in the past.

This smacks of appeasement and trying to look like you aren't doing someone a favour while still giving them a sweet deal.

I am ok with Steve Hanson working with Eddie Jones and the Wallibies. We should be doing it more often bilaterally. A strong Australian team is very good for Aotearoa and vice versa.

I agree that seems ridiculous. Moala got 10 (5) weeks, and has a totally clean record. I guess you can work out what 'good character' equates to :)

He was given a six-match ban that was reduced to four because of Farrell's “acceptance of foul play, clear demonstration of remorse and his good character.”

So if he accepted foul play, and had remorse, at the original hearing...........

Such a crock.

I don't think you can say 'good character' if someone is repeatedly being sanctioned for the same offence, which is considered an offence supposedly because of how seriously World Rugby takes head knocks and the tackle contact zone.

Six weeks should have been the starting point, and I would have accepted the week he wasn't selected for as being counted as penance for the furor over the situation - which to be fair, isn't his fault. But four weeks is still too low, especially when there's also the question of how we went from a yellow on the field (?) to a red and then not a red when he was faced with a six week ban and now we have.... four weeks.

As outcome, this has genuinely made things even harder for World Rugby to explain.

I get the feeling Hansen is as much there to coach Eddie as he is to coach the Wallabies. Jones has enough experience that there's very little meaningful contribution that Hansen can make at a technical level for the players, probably more feeding into the structure of sessions and the camps in advance of the tournament.

6 Weeks should have been the starting point, and then his prior offending should have added a couple of weeks, especially since this is subsequent to him having attended tackle school. No remorse discount, because you can't be a repeat offender and have 'genuine' remorse in this situation (he isn't a drug addict without the ability to control himself).

I'd have thought 8 weeks, with a week for his already missed game (which is fair given the disruption wasn't his fault).

Best I can tell he got a 30% discount for having done this before in the last 12 months.

I look forward to All Black reds being given the same treatment come RWC time.
