well i owe the ref an apology

i have studied the scrum penalty at it looks like the flanker detached from the scrum and that was the point the penalty was awarded and according to the laws of the game the flanker must not detach at the moment he detached

sounds like a very legit penalty, nobody from England complained about it, fair play SA

I can't believe everybody is still banging on about the World Cup, when the most important, and best, game of the weekend was Taranaki lifting the trophy.

What a day out it was!

I didn't even watch it on replay to be honest. Glad you had a good day though. Well done Naki.

Good fair ref. We are going to have to be very well disciplined.

If people can ask “Who was the ref in the 2023 final?”, and struggle to recollect, then he will have done his job expertly.

I fear however, that because of the state of the rules of rugby, that is virtually impossible for a human to achieve. Listening closely to Ben O’Keefe during the second semifinal, you could tell it really was a team of four officiating. I do like when the on-field ref says “nothing to see here, play on” because they are close to the action. Wayne Barnes is particularly good at that. Sometimes there is just too much for one person to cover, so is there a case for two on-field referees?

I agree that would be nice, but at the same time, I want him to be involved so long as he is consistent. If the game is decided due to a red or yellow card, it should be consistent with both teams and how it was refereed in other games.

If it's red and no question on the legitimacy, then fine. I like the bunker system, even though it feels a little less transparent.

I don't think we need two on field referees.

Batman: Hello Wayne Barnes

We're doomed!  Doomed!

Worst ref since Colin Hawke.

I couldn't disagree more. On what recent examples are you basing it on? Surely, you aren't talking about 2007 still?

Anyone except the French guy, I would be happy with.

Wayne Barnes has been consistently a bad referee.  It started in 2007, but since then it's been steady stream of inconsistency and at times incompetence.   I could give you a long list of games and poorly judged match-turning decisions but I suspect at the end of it you'd still disagree.

As one example he made a very poor ruck call in the Ireland test in Welly last year (I was there with a very good view of that ruck).  Cost the ABs possession and their last good chance of turning the game.  Admittedly his recent refereeing of the ABs quarterfinal was generally good, but even then he made a very poor call at the ruck that preceded Ireland's third try.  I had no problem with the try, but they never should have had the pill.  Just two examples from two recent outings against the ABs.  I didn't like Smith's yellow card, but that is an issue with the rules not the ref.  Smith answered that nicely himself with a successful interception.

I watch a lot of rugby and I see him ref games that don't involve the ABs and I find him inconsistent and at times incompetent during those matches too.

All refs are bad. Coz the rules are so darn complicated and in many circumstances can be interpreted both ways.

I watched another video about the SA penalty and I retract my apology to the ref, I think he got it wrong. He should have checked with TMO even though it's not allowed.

Re SA they have had big ref decisions go their way two matches in a row. Smh.

Why would he do this if it's not allowed?  How do you get on at work when you do things that aren't allowed?

I don't think all Refs are bad. If the rules don't allow for reasonable refereeing, then the rules are what is at fault. There are 30 players on the field and at time, 10+ could be colliding, and you can't be everywhere and see everything. The margins are tiny in some decisions, and unless you want grid iron, the referees do a reasonable job in most instances of having matches flow vs catching every single minor infringement.

There have been some issues this RWC, but having watched every minute of the last 3 in a row, I'd say the quality of refereeing has been up from a couple of the previous ones. The quality of communication and consistency of how they have treated both teams on the field has been well balanced overall.

I have zero anxiety about Barnes having the whistle on Sunday morning. I hope he has a good game, and the players make it as easy for him to make the right decisions, as they can.

This is what is raising my anxiety about this weekend. So far in the WC:

NZ: Yellow Cards 5, Red Cards 1

SA: Yellow Cards 1, Red Cards 0
