Robertson's All Blacks team looks to have been selected based on 2023 form.
Looks like we're about to rehash the Mitchell era.

That's a strange take on the situation. AB's have never been selected soley on their Super Rugby form of the current year. If it was Ma'a Nonu would almost never have made the AB's. There are some new caps selected soley on their 2023 form, but you need SOME consistency in selection.
Barrett at Captain was the obvious pick being someone that Robertson was familiar with and trusts, a pretty important part of your first national Team.
I have concerns about Barretts temperament slightly, especially given his Red Cards etc. Between him and Savea, I think he was the right pick probably, though both will be fine. On field I don't think it makes much difference but off-field I don't think Savea loves the extra stuff he has to do.

Two weeks LOL. Proving again that England are a protected class when it comes to cardings. How, HOW do you only get 2 weeks, when your VERY last test ALSO garnered a red? He had played only 6 minutes.
Scott Barrett seems the obvious choice for the ABs Captain. As far as being a card magnet goes, could he be any worse than Sam Cane? Ardie Savea always struck me as a reluctant captain when he was required to step up.
Injuries have obviously affected some of the selections. There are areas, like the loose forwards and outside backs, where there are too many outstanding candidates for the spots available and I feel sorry for those who at other times would have bolted in.

I’m guessing that must be one of the most insulting things you can say about an All Black coach. It certainly works for me. But I can’t see it happening that way.
So how is Robertson repeating Mitchell’s mistakes?

Cane usually got penalties for infringements. Barrett gets cards for plain foul play. It's not up there with making Troy Flavell captain but it's on the same scale.
Having said that it would extremely simple for him to not get cards, so that could be part of the decision, but given prior form, I'll withhold judgement until we get to the actual Rugby Championship.

He's got a lot of 50/50 Crusaders in there and relatively little space for some of the key contributors to the Blues defense structure, which was by far and away the best in the competition and has been for some time.
In other words, it's pretty much what happened in 2003.

I'm a Cane fan, he's massively under rated player, but he he played a huge part in that final, for the wrong reason.

Are you going to tell me you would be as surprised if Barrett got a red card as All Blacks captain for dangerous play as you were when Sam Cane did?
about time Auckland got back to dominating NZ rugby. During that first RWC period when NZ won 3 years straight, the Blues also didnt drop a game for 5 years straight. It was a very dominant time world NZ world rugby union. Clearly its a lot harder these days with Rugby being a full on professional sport, but I hope the ABs get back to dominating everybody.

Reserves: 16. Theo Dan, 17. Fin Baxter, 18. Dan Cole, 19. Alex Coles, 20. Tom Curry, 21. Ben Spencer, 22. Fin Smith, 23. Ollie Sleightholme.
There are a few names I've never heard of, and some I am genuinely surprised to see included such as Itoje, Curry, Marler and George. I would have thought those guys wouldn't be contenders for another World Cup, and certainly not starting.
I have said all along that fans should temper their expectations with Robertsons AB's. As I expected, he has gone fairly conservative with his picks. I had to LOL at the number of comments where his selections were compared to that of Foster, the oligatory mates in the Crusaders type comments when selecting Crusaders, and the fact that he wasn't starting with a team of nearly unheard of's and having them run over the top of everyone right from the first minute.
I suspect we may have a rough first year even, as we find our style, and our combinations. As I did with Foster, I'd encourage worrying less about winning every match by 30 points, and experiment to see if we can find something 'new'.

What? Tom Curry is 26 (same age as Papalii and younger than Savea, Blackadder and Jacobsen), Itoje is 29 (younger than Scott Barrett and Patrick Tuipolotu) and Marler and George are both 33 (the same age as Codie Taylor and Beauden Barrett) and a year older than Tu'ungafasi.
Dan Cole is older than dirt but the rest of the squad isn't old with a lot of younger guys. They pretty much have to pick Cole, their props are poor or green outside of him and Marler.

Well, I will admit, I never checked the ages, it just feels like Curry, Marler, Itoje and George have been around since absolutely forever. I just assumed they were older than that (though Marler and George are 33, which I do consider getting on in Rugby years).

20. Luke Jacobson (18)
21. Finlay Christie (21)
22. Anton Lienert-Brown (70)
23. Beauden Barrett (123)
Semi Surprises for me are 6, 15 in the starters, and 9 is probably the right call, but honestly, I never expected to see him in a black jersey again, though my main areas of concern with TJP are somewhat less of a problem based on this last season. He's been much quicker and more accurate.
